$400 40GB PlayStation 3 on Tap?

Rumors of a 40GB version of the PlayStation 3 priced at a "mere" $400 (hey, that's cheap compared to the $500 launch price for the now-discontinued 20GB PS3 and the current, $600 80GB model) have been swirling for weeks, and now they're reaching a fever pitch with word of leaked retail documents that show the console hitting the streets this month.

Opposable Thumbs first broke the story early last month of a possible 40GB, $400 PS3 bundled with a Blu-ray disc of "Spider-Man 3," and now Engadget has a copy of a purported Best Buy document detailing plans for the new console to be "in stock" by October 28. Of course, there's still no word from Sony, so we should take this news with a grain of salt until we hear something official. That said, a new—and cheaper—version of the PS3 could give Sony's faltering console a much-needed shot in the arm, especially in light of the Wii's continuing momentum and spiking Xbox 360 sales in the wake of the record-breaking Halo 3.

    This would be a smart move for Sony. I really don't understand why they don't just release a PS3 that doesn't come with a HDD at all. I could be priced much cheaper, and you could get a drive at the size that you want.

    It isn't the hard drive that should be optional. It's almost necessary nowadays. What I would to have optional would the Blu-Ray drive.

    I believe the games are on bluray thus the drive cannot be optional, at least thats what my ps3 documentation states.

    PS3 games can be up to 50gb due to the size of dual-layer Blu-Ray discs, so there will NEVER be a PS3 without a Blu-Ray drive. The benefit of game size is apart from the added benefit of being able to watch Blu-Ray movies in 1080p. And anyway, the BR drive doesn't add that much to the price: at launch, the drive only cost Sony $100 per unit; now it has to be much less. The PS3 has other expensive components as well: Cell processor, RSX, HDMI 1.3, XDR Ram, SATA HDDs, Bluetooth receiver. As PS3 games are starting to hit their stride, the value in PS3 will become more apparent. A $399, 40gb PS3 will light sales on fire, much like the iPhone drop to $399 did for Apple. PS3 iPhone ...lol

    screw sony. they have no respect for their customers...they can suck it. I'll stick with the 360 and the wii.
