Apple Fesses up to Freezing iMacs

Yet another black eye for Apple—this time, concerning its new, much-heralded iMac line. According to MacRumors, Jobs & Co. have admitted that a bug is causing iMacs to freeze up; a fix is coming "later this month," an Apple spokesperson said.

AppleInsider reports that the bug (possibly related to the iMac's ATI Radeon HD graphics circuitry) causes the iMac interface to seize up entirely, forcing users to reboot. Some posters on Apple's discussion forums say that games, iTunes, and other graphically intensive applications tend to freeze their iMacs; others, however, are suffering from random system crashes.

Apple has told Macworld that a fix for the iMac freezes is on tap: "We are tracking down the root cause of this bug, and will issue a software update as soon as we can," the spokesperson said. "We apologize for the inconvenience." Let's hope the patch comes sooner rather than later.

    Dont have one of the newer macs yet - I would love to get one of those nice black macbooks though...

    i bought a black macbook a long time ago, in january it crashed hardcore. but they just gave me a new one. then my cousin bought a nice white one, one week later, it crashed hardcore, constantly lockin up for no reason , then just quit. they gave her a new one no problems though. apple is good about fixing your problem or just giving you a new one i will say.

    I have been using the new iMac 24" since last Christmas and no crashes, but iPhoto "quits" on a regular basis, but it does not lose any work. Was using iWork 06, but now have 08 and "quits" have happened only twice in about a month. I like many of the new features, but iPhoto and iMovie needs several bugs fixed, as they do not always work like they should. Numbers has a steep learning curve (I think) and is not as user friendly as Apple would like you to believe. Would be nice if the tutorials would load completly and then play. Question... What is this "unbu" ? I have an old Mac 6500 and would like to get rid of it, but not until all of the personal things are deleted. I have all of the original install disks. Any advise will be appreciated.

    YEs i have a new imac it has locked up 2 times and using itunes.

    I upgraded from a 700 mhz G4 to one of the new 20" iMacs. I expected to see a substantial speed boost and it is usually capable of running more programs at the same time. Still, the beach ball seems to pop up more than I would expect for a machine that should be so much better than the G4. I have also had a couple of instances where it just freezes, as described.
