Yet another black eye for Apple—this time, concerning its new, much-heralded iMac line. According to MacRumors, Jobs & Co. have admitted that a bug is causing iMacs to freeze up; a fix is coming "later this month," an Apple spokesperson said.

AppleInsider reports that the bug (possibly related to the iMac's ATI Radeon HD graphics circuitry) causes the iMac interface to seize up entirely, forcing users to reboot. Some posters on Apple's discussion forums say that games, iTunes, and other graphically intensive applications tend to freeze their iMacs; others, however, are suffering from random system crashes.

Apple has told Macworld that a fix for the iMac freezes is on tap: "We are tracking down the root cause of this bug, and will issue a software update as soon as we can," the spokesperson said. "We apologize for the inconvenience." Let's hope the patch comes sooner rather than later.

Any iMac users out there having trouble with their systems?

I love my mac. I use a pc at work and a mac at home. The way this article is written, it seems as if the author was just waiting for years for apple to have a blemish. At least they have identified the problem and are in the process of fixing it. My boss is still trying to figure out what's up with XP and now there's Vista which is screwing up the universe. So... one little patch on an imac, or six months of guesswork and security issues on a pc, only to have an upgrade available by the time you figure it all out. Apple service has always been impeccable and I would not trade my system for the world of pc problems.

I was about to purchase a macpro notebook but will wait until these bugs have been fixed. Particularly the overheating of the mag. cord.

At least Apple fesses up about the problem- although maybe a bit reluctantly. I can't say the same about that other corporation.... BTW, for odtrobert, "ubntu" info is at http://unbuinc.net. PS, On this MacBook/Leopard I'm pecking on (my first Apple- just got it 2 days ago), I just selected "ubntu" in odtrobert's post, right clicked it, then selected "Search in Google" from the cool menu and PRESTO, the Safari browser opened Google with results for "ubutu". Ditto for the Consumer Reports link above. This is GREAT! But it gets even better- the same exact thing works in *all* of the Mac apps I've played with. I'm impressed! Makes intelligent surfing much more efficient.
