Steve Jobs called the iPhone hacking saga a "cat and mouse game," and it looks like the mice are about to get the upper hand—for now, at least.
Engadget just posted a
handy blow-by-blow of the events since September 27: the date of the infamous
v1.1.1 software update, which turned many hacked with SIM unlocking apps and other third-party programs into, well, iBricks. While most owners of hacked iPhones were able to breathe life into their handsets (some iPhones were permanently damaged, however, and
lawsuits are underway), the update rendered all existing hacks useless.
Until now, that is. Engadget reports that a group of hackers have managed to gain full root access—in other words, the keys to the kingdom—for v1.1.1 iPhones and iPod Touches. Engadget notes that the hack isn't yet public and that it's still a little buggy, but it shouldn't be long before we see reports of unlocked v1.1.1 iPhones in the wild.
Keep in mind, of course, that all Apple has to do is release software update v1.1.2 to relock the iPhone...and then the game will begin again.
