Hands-on Review: Sidekick LX

Back in the day, the Sidekicks were among the most innovative phones around, what with their swiveling displays and killer messaging features. The Sidekick II blew me away back in mid-2004, so much so that I snapped one up for myself. But that was then, and this is now, and the Sidekick LX—updated though it may be—is looking pretty dated.

We can blame the iPhone for much of the Sidekick's long-in-the-tooth status. Love it or hate it, the iPhone and its touch UI has pretty much changed the industry, so much so that everyone's copying it (e.g., the Sprint Touch, the LG Voyager, etc.). While I've always been impressed by the Sidekick's intuitive interface, which (way back when, at least) practically seemed to be reading your mind, in today's wireless world, it feels a little quaint.

Anyway, let's hit some highlights—and lowlights:

Things I like:

  • Form factor: When you look at their measurements, the Sidekick LX and last year's Sidekick 3 are practically the same size: about 5.1 by 2.3 by 0.9 inches. However, the LX manages to feel slimmer and more streamlined than the 3, and at 5.7 ounces the LX is more than an ounce lighter. Also, the funky flashing lights along the LX's "bumpers" never hurt.
  • QWERTY keypad: The Sidekick's big, roomy QWERTY keypad has always been a highlight, and the LX continues the tradition with nicely backlit, rubberized keys that are easy on the fingertips. Well done.
  • Vastly improved display: T-Mobile has been making a big deal of the LX's new dispay, with good reason. At 400 x 240 pixels and with technology borrowed from Sharp's Aquos line of LCDs, the LX's display represents a quantum leap over the Sidekicks of old, with revamped graphics to match.
  • Intuitive UI: It may lack the iPhone's touch interface, but the LX boasts the Sidekick's impressive easy-to-use interface, including the "Jump" screen and an always-present menu option that rarely fails to deliver the options you want.
  • Great e-mail and IM: The LX may not work with corporate e-mail accounts, but its e-mail client is still one of the best around for a consumer phone—and if you set up a Tmail account, messages are pushed to your device instantly (I used to forward my Gmail messages to Tmail, which got pushed almost immediately to my Sidekick II, and it worked like a dream). The LX's IM client (compatible with AIM, MSN, and Yahoo IM) is super-slick as well, and it runs in the background.
  • Standard headset jack: Have a pair of pricey Shure earphones you want to use with the LX? No problem: a standard 3.5mm jack is included (and you won't need an adapter, a la the iPhone).
  • MySpace Mobile: Got a MySpace account? Sidekick's new MySpace app is a slick, easy way to ping pals on your buddy list or post messages and pictures.

Things I don't like:

  • Half-baked MP3 player: The Sidekick 3 came with the handset's first stab at a music player, and the LX's version is basically the same version. You can play MP3s and AAC music files, but subscription music services aren't supported. Also, you still can't view album art, and there's still no equalizer, no video playback, no over-the-air music, no stereo Bluetooth support, and no external music buttons (besides a volume control). While I appreciate how the Sidekick lets you play tunes in the background, the LX's music player feels like something from 2005.
  • No touch UI: Yes, I praised the Sidekick LX's interface just a moment ago, but as an iPhone user, I can't help but be disappointed by the lack of touch-sensitivity on the LX's screen—it's the wave of the future, and the LX's UI can't help but feel like yesterday's news. Too many times while surfing the LX's various screens, I found myself wondering, "Why can't I just touch that?"
  • Outdated Web browser: The Sidekick's on-board Web browser was amazing back in 2004; today, it's looking seriously dated. Yes, it still renders big HTML Web sites that standard phones can't, but pages look badly jumbled, and pull-down menus and other on-screen inputs are tough to manipulate. With heavy competition in the form of Nokia's top-notch Web browser and Safari on the iPhone, the Sidekick will have to do better to stand out from the crowd.
  • No 3G: T-Mobile has yet to launch its own 3G network, so EDGE-only data access on the LX is a given. Still, that leaves it several feet behind the starting line compared to such phones as the Palm Centro and the upcoming Voyager, especially when it comes to streaming video and music downloads. But wait—the iPhone doesn't support 3G either! True, but that leads us to...
  • No Wi-Fi: T-Mobile is no stranger to Wi-Fi-enabled phones—witness the Wing and the new BlackBerry Curve, both with Wi-Fi—yet here is the LX, with no Wi-Fi in sight. The non-3G iPhone can do over-the-air music downloads thanks to Wi-Fi—not so here. Even worse, T-Mobile missed a golden opportunity to make the LX a HotSpot @Home phone (which allows for Wi-Fi phone calls).
  • No GPS: Not only is the LX lacking integrated GPS, it's also seriously in need of a garden-variety mapping application, which is getting to be standard issue with even the most basic phones.

Bottom line:

The Sidekick line deserves a deep bow for its nifty design and past innovations, yet it's fallen seriously behind the times. Such features as streaming video, music downloads, Wi-Fi, and GPS are practically givens in the latest high-end consumer phones, and with its high-end price tag of $300, it's fair to expect such tricks from the LX. Sadly, I can't recommend the LX unless you're a die-hard Sidekick fan. Instead, save your money for a handset with today's features, such as the iPhone, the soon-to-be-released Voyager or the Palm Centro (which offers 3G, streaming video, and push e-mail for just $100).

People with bias opinions shouldnt be allowed to write articles. instead of a sklx review this was an iphone comparison. i 100 percent agree that it does need somekind of faster interenet and that is lacking with the wifi and video. but even the i phone cant take video and the options for streeming it are just a bad version of youtube without even all the content. as far as navagation i open my web browser and type in. www.mapquest.com look to my right and find the address and im golden. so dont be lazy with your navigation crap the i phone honestly is the worst smart phone ever i would gladly take any of the other listed phones running windows mobile over it.

Why spend $400 on a new sidekick ...if you have SK3, when you can get a ipod for the same price and the LX does nothing really new. Besides light up on the side..hehe. No video same brower...give us oprea same sucky camra Ill wait till my contract is up and get a iphone or hopefully something better one thing for sure about the SK it is the best notes, texting and IM's hands down. Like tha last posters said I 2nd that

I am online 24/7 too and don't even have an IM client on my phone! Its called SMS aim and is great. Sidekicks are for kids that don't know much about phones and have their mommy and daddy to pay the $300. For $300, it is a HUGE rip off. You can get a nokia s60 phone with full qwerty for $300 and it can do what the sidekick does when its turned off.

the sidekick lx is a great device! the only thing I really dislike is the keypad, I miss the keypad frum the sk 3. && I wish they would have upgraded aim, maybe allow us to send pics over aim or when the away message is up allow us 2 see our buddy list. but other than that the lx is great! the camera can b updated too! but really if u want && need all that wifi && junk && video get a cpu! or a laptop! the sidekick is not suppose to have features that a cpu can have. it's only but so much they can actually put in here without neglecting the real meaning of a sidekick! I mean if the sidekick had all the features at the iphone && curve, where would it's unique difference be!? I mean I prefer the sklx over the iphone && the iphone has it's pros && cons too! I WOULD recommend it to anyone!! especially younger ppl like myself!

nothing bothers me more than the screen of my phone having finger smudges all over it, and that's exactly what the iphone does. sk lx = A+

i believe the color variety isnt very special either. blue isnt a sleek color to come out with. black is sleeker and a good simple color. then later when it is already popular to come out with different colors.

I don't think it's all that fair that you say that the LG Voyager is copying the iPhone when the iPhone copied the LG Prada in the first place, so if you ask me, LG had every right to do that with the voyager. Or in my opinion anyway.

If you think the iPhone is popular now, wait until they release the SDK in February and 100s of third party applications of every kind come out for the iPhone. Then you'll see the true potential of a phone with OS X.

The sidekick lx is not to be compared with the pda and smart phone genre. They are in two different caterogies. The sidekick lx was made for the youth of today that surround there lives with myspace and instant messaging. The pda's and smartphones like the iphone and the blackberry curve were intended to appeal to people in the corporate world that need the corporate email and the gps and things the microsoft office and whatever have you.I believe that the sidekick is a very good phone for what it's usage is intended for. Also the touch screen was made for the tech savvy person that wants something new and innovative that see electronics as there toys. Keep in mind that the iphone was not the first touch screen it might be the most innovative touch screen but it's not the first. the only thing that has never really been done completely is the new voicemail feature where you can see your mail before you listen to it. Some advice you dont buy a phone for a trend you look at what you need from a phone before you go out and spend $400 dollars on phone you will wind up unhappy with.

This review is quite biased. Your love for your iphone is blatant and interferes with giving an honest review. The music player is very solid, you don't like it because you can't play your chained down mp4's. That's your decision to pay money for such a crippled format. For the majority of users who have mp3's, it works great. It plays many other file types, and yes, you can view album art. The web browser is great, it quite actually reproduces many real pages. You could say the sk3 made them look odd, but with the larger screen the pages are just scaled down, but are still true to life. You're just used to safari, and because it's not safari it's automatically inferior. And touch screen is not something I have any desire for. The trackball works amazingly well, so much so that BB copied the design. You act as though the device should be the best in every area. The lx has superior messaging capabilities in every aspect compared to your beloved iphone, so why is it so lacking? And the UI is flawless, no other phone lets you multi-task as easily or effortless as a sidekick. The only point to your list of con's was the exclusion of wifi. But that isn't enough to make or break a phone. Edge coverdge is very solid, it is a cell phone, and it's only $20 a month. How much is your messaging and data? And how many people under 30 do you know that use gps? I don't know any. Mapquest works great on the kick. The lx is a limited upgrade over the sk3 but it is a great phone in its own right. Try not to be so slanted in your reviews next time, for the reader's sake.

this is a review from an iPhone user/apple fanboy/girl. so its kinda bias. the iphone has a touch screen...big deal. it still does not have 3g nor a good im client. and thats where the sidekick stands out. like someone else here said the sidekick is the only phone that has a real version of im. which is one of the main reasons why kids love it.I am not too fond of music on my phone...i would have preffered tmobile put wifi on the sidekick though i'd have to agree with that. sidekick is a good phone for its demographic. no need to knock it.

i cannot agree with this review at all. i just purchased my LX yesterday and i have never owned a sidekick before, but the endless social connectivity it provides is overwheling. trust me it was 300 dollars well spent and i would not change it for an iphone anytime soon

they need to make a another new sidekick with a camera timer, myspace where u can hear the music, one where you can record videos, a radio on it and TOUCH SCREEN, it could be faster too ! personally im a current sidekick 3 user and the sidekick lx dosent impress me at ALL when they make one RIGHT then thats when i buy a new one !the lx is also ugly :O

I think they need 2 make the sidekick 3 like the LX begin that they just came out with the sidekick3 it would make a lot of sence cuz theses are like the last 2 out sidekicks besides the ID and sidekick 2

i love my sidekick lx . everyone says the iphone is the best. You only hear the good things about the phone but noone wants to talk about the bad things like touching the screen and not getting what you wanted out of the phone everying is too sensitive and in my opiion thats not what i want in a phone i want everything in my hands at my hands. To much detail for a little phone.....

I have a sidekick lx and I'm telling you, compared to other phones, the money I spent on this phone was completely wasted, I'm 17 years old and I used to have the sidekick 3 and I'm seriously tired, if you're reading this do not get a sidekick lx for your teen, if you have a son the best phone you can get them is either a palm or some other PDA phone, for a girl this would be a good phone but another alternative would be the newly released tmobile SHADOW, its an amazing phone and its cheaper than the sidekick lx and it comes with windows mobile, if your teen is stubborn then get this phone for them but know this, teens go ga-ga over this phone, I did too, so take it from me, look for other options, and especially if you don't have tmobile, look at other opitons, tmobile doesn't even have a 3G phone! So do your reasearch, hope I helped :]
