On a budget, but still looking to wrap up a gaming console for the little (or not-so-little) gamers on your list? Most of the big players in the gaming biz have been lowering console prices for the holidays (except Nintendo, which doesn't have to); here's an overview of this season's bargains.

I've listed the consoles in descending order of bang for the buck; also, these are the straight retail options, so if you're looking for super-bargains and you're fine with going used, head over to eBay and start searching.

OK, shoppers: lock and load!

6. Sony PlayStation 3, 40GB ($400)
The pitch: OK, it's a tough to call a $400 gaming console a bargain, even if it packs in state-of-the-art graphics and a Blu-ray player. Still, that's how Sony is pitching its new 40GB PlayStation 3, which went on sale in early November. This 40GB model is, indeed, considerably cheaper than the original $600, 60GB PS3 (now discontinued) and the newly discounted 80GB model ($500), but there's a catch, as you'll see in a moment.
What you get: The PS3 console, complete with a Blu-ray drive; a bundled Blu-ray copy of "Spider-Man 3"; a wireless controller; a built-in 40GB hard drive.
What you don't get: The big one here is no backward-compatibility with PS2 games—Sony says that reflects the growing catalog of PS3 titles available, although the selection remains weak compared to the Xbox 360's; also, no cable for connecting the PS3 to your HDTV.
My take: The 40GB PS3 is pricey considering what you get, and there's the matter of the console's lackluster game library and total lack of movie and TV downloads. Then again, the built-in Blu-ray player really sweetens the deal, considering that a stand-alone player costs as much as the PS3 itself.

5. Microsoft Xbox 360 Arcade ($280)
The pitch: Microsoft is pushing the Arcade—its replacement for the old Core bundle—as a 360 for the family, complete with five Xbox Arcade games and the new parental timer, which turns off the console after a pre-set period of time (I can already hear the howls of protest).
What you get: The main 360 console, of course; a 250MB memory card, good for storing four to five Xbox Live Arcade games; a DVD preloaded with five Arcade games: Pac-Man Championship Edition, Uno, Luxor 2, Boom Boom Rocket, and Feeding Frenzy.
What you don't get: A hard drive, which means you can't download videos or game demos from the Xbox Marketplace—however, you can always buy the snap-on drives later (20GB and 120GB versions are available); no wired headset; no component/HDMI cable for hooking up the 360 to your HDTV (although, again, you can always buy one for extra). No backward compatibility with old Xbox games (unless you buy a snap-in hard drive).
My take: It's not as good a value as the $350 Xbox 360 bundle, which packs in a 20GB hard drive, an HD-compatible cable, and a pair of games, but the Arcade is a good choice for families that want to dip a toe into next-gen gaming for less than $300.

4. Nintendo DS Lite ($130)
The pitch: A thinner-and-trimmer version of the classic Nintendo DS, the DS Lite comes with a massive library of portable games, especially if you count its backward-compatibility with Game Boy Advance titles.
What you get: Twin displays (the lower LCD is touch-screen); Wi-Fi, good for local multiplayer action; stereo speakers; PictoChat for chatting with up to 16 other gamers.
What you don't get: State-of-the-art (or even last-gen) graphics; indeed, gameplay looks pretty crude compared to the handheld PSP; also, you don't get much of a price break, considering that the DS Lite was $130 for its June 2006 launch.
My take: If the DS Lite were priced at, say, $89, it would be a great bargain for the kids, but at $130, it's pretty expensive for what you get.

3. Sony PSP ($170)
The pitch: The PSP was released to huge fanfare back in 2004, yet it never became a big hit like Sony's PS2. Still, it's an impressive piece of hardware with slick graphics for a handheld, and the new, slimmer PSP, released in September, boasts a TV-out port and faster load times.
What you get: A 4.3-inch wide TFT screen; Wi-Fi; an MP3 player; a Web browser; an RSS reader; a solid (but not stellar) selection of games, and a handful of full-length UMD movies; the ability to tap into your PS3 content (if you have one).
What you don't get: A huge library of games; selection of UMD movies is relatively puny.
My take: Both the old and new PSPs are pretty sweet bargains, and the graphics are still eye-popping for a handheld. It's guaranteed to thrill the kids.

2. Nintendo Wii ($250, if you can find one)
The pitch: It's the hottest console out there, and while its graphics aren't cutting-edge—I'd say it's somewhere between the PS2 and the Xbox 360—the Wii, with its motion-sensing Wiimote, is a hit with the casual-gaming set. Unlike the other consoles in this roundup, no discounts are in the offing; however, the bundled Wii Sports is so much fun that many Wii'ers are content with that title alone.
What you get: The nifty, angular Wii console and the Wiimote; built-in Wi-Fi; the much-loved Wii Sports game.
What you don't get: Unfortunately, you may have trouble getting the console itself—Nintendo says it's expecting Wii shortages during the holidays, so you might have to scratch and claw to get one; no HD games; no DVD playback (although that's supposed to change next year)
My take: A terrific bargain, provided you can actually snag one.
And the winner is...

1. Sony PlayStation 2 ($129)
The pitch: Yeah, it's eight years old, but at a mere $129, the venerable PS2 is one of the best gaming bargains around, what with its massive library of classic games and still-solid graphics. Rumor has it that a redesigned PS2 might be on tap for 2008—but hey, that's next year.
What you get: The slimmed-down PS2 console; a built-in DVD player; two memory-card slots; an Ethernet port (a given these days, but worth mentioning on a last-gen console like this); a wired controller.
What you don't get: State-of-the-art graphics; no HD-quality games.
My take: An oldie, but a definite goodie. Talk about bang for the buck.

Got any bargain ideas for gaming consoles? Fire away!

Update: In my original post, I stated that the original PSP was $30 cheaper than the new, slimmer, PSP; in fact, they're both priced at $170 (for the core package). My bad.

Honestly, Go to Ebay and shop around for a few days to see where the market is. I recently got an X-Box 360 with a 20GB hard drive and all the necessary cables, TWO wireless controllers with a DVD remote and Cool faceplate. i got this deal for $260. i also got a guarantee that if the X-box has the 3 rings of death problem, i will get it replaced for free by microsoft. Ebay should definitely be checked out. IF YOURE LOOKING FOR A WII, thats also on Ebay.

How stupid the PS2 is the winner. PS2 was great back when but now youve got to go 360 or Wii.

Anyone who knows anything about gaming or technology knows that none of these options are feasable, except for the Wii. The 360, seriously is nothing without the hard drive. The PS2, just too old. The PS3, it looks nice and all but here is the bummer: There is a format war going on between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, jut like there was with VHS and Beta. There is no telling which one will actually come out on top, and if Blu-Ray does not come out ahead, then you are stuck with it. Basically Sony forces you to buy into Blu-Ray. There are pros and cons everywhere.

Playstation is tried and true. The fact that there are not that many games at the moment is because developers are trying to catch up to the capabilities and processing speeds the PS3 are capable of. There has never been a console that could base it's success it's first years games. Sony thinks ahead and soon you'll be able to sync your psp w/ PS3 @ home from anywhere in the world. Versatility. Didn't anybody read about how Sony actually lost money on the PS3? HD players are around 1000 bucks. Go with Playstation3.

hands down PS3 is the way to go I have both a PS3 and PSP and it is so nice to be able to go on remote from anywhere and access my PS3, as far as format wars the choice is obvious a disc that can hardly hold Assasins Creed (the red rings of death to any about thinking aboutbuying xbox check on this cuz it is a major problem I dont know how many people I have talked to that have had the 360 replaced in warranty cuz it fries itself) or a blu ray that will soon hold 200gigs can we say huge games whole tv show seasons on one disc instead of many and the tried and true quality and experience of Sony who does not yank all support of the older format unlike some other company does(yes the moment MS launched the 360 the xbox was cut off no new games at all ever! the PS2 still gonna keep goin for atleast 2 years and you have the choice to buy a PS3 with or without Backwards compatibilty hence the 40 & 80 gig models and if you can still find a 60 which is the best one in my oppinion cuz it has the EE engine and PS2 sound card in it) do the research the reviewer did not do enough the reports are out that the wii and 360 even though just released are already pretty much out of head room to further develope true leaps in the technology in contrast the PS3 has just now reached the 1 year mark and the hardware is just getting intop baby steps no game has even came close to testing this machines power and the lack of games is in part due to the fact that the other systems have been out atleast a year longer and there is a lot of really good games coming. so the bottom line is buy a cheap system that is a niche machine-the wii, or a cheap system that you have to buy this that and everthing in between to get full function(yes I am serious there are so many add ons to get all you can from an unreliable system)-the 360 or pay a bit more and get reliable (failure rates are like 2% with PS3) system with FREE online gaming, HD a hardrive in every box Blu ray and a giant in the console game industy for 2 decades the choice is yours

360: If you want to play sport, shooting, or racing games with amazing graphics, then this is your type of system to get. Plus with the best online sevice you can get, but it will cost money. For some reasons, most of the 3rd party games are running better on the 360 than the PS3. WII: Want to try something new and refreshing. Even though it is aim toward new and old generations, there are still hardcore games like Zelda, Mario, Resident Evil, and Metroid for the hardcore gamers. Espeacially since it's cheap and afforable, it's a bargin, but it's hard to find one nowadays. If you can handle old generation graphic then this is totally worth the pick up. PS3, not a lot of exclusive right now. The graphic is par with the 360, even though its stronger than the rest. Give it time and there will be more titles that the system will be worth the buy, but right now, it's hard to call. And Sony made a smart move by lowering the price of its systems. And for the handheld systems, haven't really caught my attention. Had a DS and I loved it to death, but since the WII came out, I haven't really spend a lot of time on it. PSP is a nice portable PS2ish, so that's pretty sweet, but it's not worth two hundred dollars.

Well I have everyone 1 of the gaming systems except PS3 and since it doesn't do backward compatibility on the 40gb It isn't worth the money to me to buy now. If your buying for kids WII is the way to go and 360 for the adult gamer even though my 7yr old plays it as much as his WII.

I'm 46 and I luv video games. I'm not one for a whole lot of gadgets on a controller but prefer the simple game controls instead. I like the long never ending games(more bang for a buck). PS2 is the best here because of its value and backward game play for PS1. I plan to buy as many PS2 games as possible. I'll never by a Game Console thats $300-$600 I'll use my PC for updated graphics and games instead. Game Consoles should be Reasonable $100-$200max. In alot of the old PS1 games they use real actors/people for a more realistic affect that was Great! Why buy a game console if you only play a game for 30min. and you're done(What a Waste!). Gamers are the reason why GamesCDs/Consoles cost so much! Their about playing as many games possible in the least amount of time. Games are meant to take you into another World and be enjoyed day in and day out. I Hate Gamers! And Bring back the Long Games with Real People/Actors in the CDs.

I currently own 2 ps3 of which I have been very happy with. Blue ray play is top-noch! Free online play unlike pitching 40 bucks a month for xbox live. Got a hi-def TV? Why would you spend so much on the tv to have second rate playback? This system will not be replaced with another in the next five years! The 360 will have to be.

You can buy the new slim PSP for $170, just like the old model. The $200 PSPs are bundled with games and a memory stick. This reviewer reminded me of the Sony fanboy working for EB Games I ran into the other day.I went into the store to ask about a 360 and he went on about the PS3,Blueray,superior graphics, better reliability,etc.... Look there is no evidence to support the PS3 has better graphics or technology at this point! This biased reviewer compares the Wii to being somewhere between the 360 and a PS2.I'm an intelligent adult who can make his own decision on what kind of console I want. The 360 has a great library of games that I am interested in and I love the way xbox live has evolved.Does the failure of the console concern me? Yes of course, but Microsoft is backing it with an unprecedented 3 year warranty.I don't want or need a Blueray player!I have a library of over 300 DVDs and I am not about to start all over again. The promise of their alleged superior technology means nothing to me either.I've said it all along there isn't much difference between the 2 machines.Historically graphics technology moves in small increments so the just because the PS3 is a year newer means little.Your really splitting hairs when you talk about how the games look on each system...It's nothing but a fanboy argument.I am looking forward to playing Halo 3,Bioshock,Mass Effect,PGR 4,Too Human, etc. The PS3 will have some great exclusive games as well but I was never a MGS fan or FF,R & C,no disrespect to those.

I have the Wii , with 3 kids it was the best investment ever made. And actually when they are in school, I play. Bought the Transformers game and the work out is better than Tai- Bo . But my brother who is an avid gamer will not touch it. He wants the controller you just sit with and play. It is all a matter of what you are looking for.
