One of the biggest complaints about the Wii (besides the fact that it's almost impossible to get one) is that it won't play DVDs—a feature that even the old PS2 has up its sleeves. Now comes news that the promised DVD-playing Wii for Japan has been delayed, which doesn't bode well for Wii'ers in the States.

Wired's Game|Life is reporting that Nintendo issued an abject apology on its Japanese Web site: "Although we had told you that we planned to release the model described above in the latter half of 2007, we will not be able to. We are currently focusing our efforts on manufacturing the current version of the hardware and fulfilling the strong demand in Japan, the U.S., and Europe. We apologize deeply for troubling our customers and making you wait."

Hey, an apology is always nice, although some official word on the status of a DVD-enabled Wii for the U.S. would be even better. Of course, if you simply can't wait for a sanctioned Wii DVD player from Nintendo, check out this hack from Gizmodo (try it at your own risk).
