T-Mobile Pulls Glitchy Sidekick Slide

The carrier announced that it's "suspending sales" of the newly released Slide after complaints that it powers off unexpectedly when you slide the screen open and closed. Oops.

A T-Mobile rep sent out an e-mail late Friday detailing the Slide's woes and promising that Motorola (maker of the Slide) is "working to identify the root cause" of the problem, which reportedly also wipes all data from the phone. The e-mail also states that other Sidekick models, including the new LX, aren't affected by the glitch.

So, what to do? If you're the unlucky owner of a bad Slide, contact T-Mobile; the carrier will either let you exchange it for the pricier Sidekick LX or apply the cost to another T-Mobile phone. No details on a cash refund, although I'd certainly expect T-Mobile to honor such a request.

I've had a test Slide for a couple of weeks and haven't had any trouble, even after repeatedly sliding the screen open and closed. Any Slide owners out there with problems?

First of all, all phone have problems, and none of them are perfect. But as a former T-Mobile employee, let me say this: In general, Motorola phones do not have the hardware to support everything that the software asks them to do. This is why the phones have so many small glitches. You get a lot of features with Moto phones, but at the cost of lots of soft resets and tiny little problems. Also, everyone who works at T-Mobile hates the Sidekick line of handsets because T-Mobile Reps constantly have to face problems with them. When the Sidekick 3 came out, it was almost pulled from the shelves because the charging light didn't come on when it was charging! Combine Motorola with Sidekick, and you have a recipe for disaster. The Sidekick (Danger) server and software are inferior to Blackberry, so I would stick with the Pearl or the Curve. If you get the Pearl, MAKE SURE you get the latest software updates (free on the t-mobile.com website). With the latest software, the Pearl is an awesome handset. If you just want to be cool and not use the data features, I would look at Nokia phones, which are generally more sound.

I have talked to several people with the moto slide. The problem seems to be that some units have a "loose battery" problem and can be solved with a peice of paper or something to make it more snug

I've had a total of 4 different razr's I first got one in december of 2006 around may of "07" my phone began to shut on and off and I can honestly say it wasnt from dropping it, because I had a leather case which soften any damage it could have gotten, then I called tmobile and asked to be sent a new phone they told me one would be sent but I would have to pay extra money to receive it quicker or still pay and receive it later when I got the second one it was worst then the 1st one so they sent me another one, recently that phone screen went completely out, and now im on the 4th phone I personally believe i should be given something extra or they should allow me to exchange the phone for a better one

We have T-mobile Hotspot in our home and still do not get the service we were told we would get, one bad thing about the hotspot is you have to buy a special phone to go with it (then it still doesn't work most of the time!) If I had a choice I would go 60 miles away and get Cellular one a much more reliable company to work with I had it before I move to this blasted place, the only reason I gave it up was because living here I was alway's in roam, but I should have kept it as it was a very reliable service and it didn't matter almost anywhere I was I had service there were very few dead spots. Here we have a T-mobile right down the street and still do not get service. If you ask me T-mobile is just a waste of money but my honey insisted on it! (bummer)

I've had a Sidekick II for over 2 years. Still works fine and does everything I want it to. Having said that, it would be nice if I could install my own wallpaper instead of the hip-hop looking stuff that it comes with. Also would be great if I could install wav or mp3 files of my own for rigntones and alerts in place of the hip-hop kind of stuff avaialble for download. Since I don't libe in a getto and I'm not a pimp, I don't get why those are my only choices.

"The slide on my child's swingset leans to one side.:) " You just made my day. Did T-Mobile mess up the slide? It wouldn't surprise me

I have a Sidekick 3, and 2 be quite honest with you...it ain't all that! The Sidekick is like for the younger crowd..U know the teens!! I had since march of 07, and I am soo not a big fan of it right now. Other than the keyboard which is good for texting, I am just not satisfied with the phone. I honestly think T-mobile is great with the service, but some phones just are'nt all of what they seem to be. I never loose a call, and the plan I have is great. I am in the process of getting the T-mobile Wing. WARNING... DO NOT GET THE SIDEKICK!!

My daughter had nothing but problems with her Sidekick within the first week of purchasing the thing, so we returned it for a Razr, and she's much happier now.

T-mobile dash, better than the slide, sidekick, or wing (I have had all 3) the dash doesn't have touch screen but who cares? The wing has touch screen but other than that it has nothing more than the dash, and the wing screen gets buggy (something with the graphics processor) and you have to reboot it periodically. The dash works fine all the time. The sidekicks are two locked in with what you can and can't do which is why I moved to the wing, which has windows mobile so you can pretty much do anything with it (including mp3's as ringtones, the FULL MP3 at that not some segment of it.) But the dash is just as good, just sans the touchscreen and with it sans the buggy display. The dash is the best, way better than a blackberry. Blackberrys are once again, locked down so to speak, on what can and can not go on them. On a windows mobile device (like the dash) you can use Voip phone service through the internet (saving you wireless phone charges and international LD charges) you can get sirius satellite radio (which you can plug into your car or home audio so you get it there as well, internet tv stations, full length movies (if you add an extra memory card, it can take a 4g if you have windows mobile 6 on it, which the dash has) and a slew of other software. I can even hook it up to my laptop to give myself internet on the laptop when I travel. Their total internet add-on for the dash is only 20$

sidekicks user data is backed up to TMO servers. So if you throw it in lake you will not loose your data. Thats the beauty of a side kick.

I purchased the Sidekick Slide & experienced the device freezing up & T-mobile did not hesitate to replace the phone w/ the LX, the only thing is when I rec. the package for the LX the phone was missing. I ended up placing another order for the Shadow, I hope it comes soon & there are no issues w/ it. GABIGREDGIRL

I feel the exact same way as the last person who posted a comment. I have a sidekick 3 and love it, I have problems with my camera sometimes, but other than that this phone is great my only wish is that it had video capture or at least when your online you can see the moving pictures insteading of just freezing them.
