$339 Blu-ray Player Is the Cheapest Yet

Prices for Blu-ray players are finally starting to slide, although they've got a ways to go before hitting HD DVD's rock-bottom $99 mark.

High-Def Digest is reporting that Samsung's BD-P1400 Blu-ray player, which originally retailed for $499, is now selling for $339 at online retailers such as Buy.com and Amazon. That makes the BD-P1400 the first stand-alone player that's actually cheaper than the $399, 40GB version of the PlayStation 3, which comes with a built-in Blu-ray deck.

It's great news for those of us waiting for the HD price war to shift into high gear. Remember that earlier this month, Sony reps said that its Blu-ray player prices probably wouldn't fall below $399 this season, even in the face of a $99 HD DVD player fire sale in early November. I'm glad to see that Samsung has taken the plunge, even if $339 is still way pricey for a stand-alone HD deck.

Now, before you rush out and buy the BD-P1400, take heed: it only supports the older 1.0 profile for Blu-ray players and cannot be upgraded to profile 1.1, which allows for picture-in-picture video commentaries (a feature that's standard on HD DVD players). Bummer.

I am still happy as can be with the ($229) 1080p upconverting OPPO DV-981HD I bought last January to go with my 42" Panasonic Plasma. At this rate, it will be a long time before I see any need to jump on either the Blu-ray or HD bandwagon.

I just scored a Philips upconvert DVD player w/HDMI for $45 at Wal-Mart. No - I do not have a high end home theater, I just have a nice 50" DLP, hooked to a Sony Home Theater in a box. Now I have a nice DVD player that automatically upconverts to 1080i. Call me when a hybrid HD-DVD/Blu-Ray/Upconvert DVD player is in the $150 ballpark ... And, by the way, WalMart is selling Toshiba $199 HD-DVD players, but I crack up everytime I see that, because there is not ONE SINGLE HD-DVD disk in the store. Blu-Rays aplenty, but not one HD-DVD.
