Bad Idea: Non-Skippable Ads on DVDs

Is that hurtling car gonna crush Bruce Willis? Find out—right after these messages.

Yes, most standard DVD movies already come loaded with an annoying number of previews and coming attractions (which, thankfully, you can usually skip). But try this on for size: the bloggers at Zatz Not Funny unearthed a patent application from IBM that would allow for non-skippable ads at any point on a DVD. Wonderful.

According to the patent filing, a DVD could come embedded with a certificate that determines whether the disc should be played with advertisements; if the DVD is flagged for ads, then the non-skippable commercials could run at any point during the video. The ads could also be grabbed from the Internet (provided the player in question has a Net connection) or simply come pre-loaded onto the disc.

Now, before we all freak out, keep in mind that IBM's patent was filed over a year ago, and that there's a good chance the idea will never work its way onto our DVDs. Also, writer Davis Freeberg suggests some relatively benign possibilities for the patent: for example, maybe the ads would only be activated on budget versions of a disc (say, a $3.99 copy of the new "Die Hard" flick, as opposed to the standard $29.95 version) or even free DVDs.

I guess that's fine, as long as the no-commercial discs are still available. But here's what worries me: the possibility of downloading fresh ads from the Internet, an idea that might entice advertisers who've been loathe to buy commercial time on DVDs in the past. (Most standard DVD players can't connect to the Net, but Ethernet-equipped HD DVD players and upcoming Blu-ray decks certainly could.) In that case, I could easily envision discs with pre-roll ads—similar to those in movie theaters—through which you'd be forced to sit. Would disc prices drop if pre-movie ads became part of the package? Sadly, I doubt it; after all, the last time I checked, movie ticket prices continue to climb despite all the pre-roll commercials.

Personally, I'm offended by the fact that I have to watch "commercials" before seeing a movie I paid for - either in the theater or on DVD. Enough is enough!

This does sound outragious. I would personally not but these movies if they do start caring commercials during the movie. I do however like watching the previews before the movies in the theatres, it is nice to know what new movies are coming out plus it gives people time to get snacks and get seated before the movie starts. As far as the DVD discs go, I do like having the option of watching the upcoming movie trailers (Like having a link under the Special Features menu.) But I will not but DVD's, Blue-Ray Discs, HD-DVD's that have ads that I have to watch during my movie.

Very Bad Idea. I agree with robincalendar. I Buy DVDs for the Movies not the commercials. It seems you can never get away from them!

I don't mind trailers, but commercials that you can't skip trough in the middle of my movie... no way. Even if that would lower the prices of discs.

Who enjoys ads at movies? Previews yes, commercials no. The theater was the last place on Earth we had to escape commercials. Not only are we forced to watch these commercials, they are three times as long as regular TV spots. They know we are a captive audience with no remote to change the channel. Whats next? Tivos (DVRs) that force us to watch certain ads?! not in my house!

Sorry, but having ads you can not skip is not new. I have a couple that if you try to skip it takes you back and plays all of the ads over and over. It will not allow skip or fast forward or anything. I guess the only thing I has found is check the company and not buy the DVDs.

    What's next, studio logo watermarks?

The next medium is true digital download of content. DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray is not long term viable with compression and download rates making storage and transfer of large media files as simple as a zip disk move to your buddies and play on his "tv".

Ads are one of the main reasons I no longer go to the movies. If I have to endure them on a DVD, which I also have paid for, then I will also quit purchasing DVD's.

Not only would I never purchase a DVD with an ad on it, I would never buy another product from any company that put ads on a DVD. I haven't voted for a candidate that has called my home, I have not donated a dime again to a charity that called my home, and I would gladly boycott any company that is so interested in a profit that they would try to place a ad on a DVD.

If the DVD was free, fine put ads in it. But if I sheck out $20+ for it, there better not be any ads.

whats really dumb is that at some theatres they actually play ads for that theater

  • 18 Posted by gparach on Thu Sep 3, 2009 4:11PM EDT Report Abuse

I will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER pay for another movie on DVD, BlueRay ir other medium if commercials are randomly interrupting playback. I hope the powers to be in the movie industry is reading this, because you are about to make a huge mistake. Don't get too greedy!

actually, rorbincalendar, as soon as the encryption is broken, you have broken the law.

Great, as if the ads on TV werent enough. Im sorry but I dont want commercials for things like Viagra and Lipitor on any of my DVDs, even if it only costs 2 cents.

"actually, rorbincalendar, as soon as the encryption is broken, you have broken the law." Major grey area. Every DVD player HAS to break the encryption in order to play the DVD. What is illegal is REMOVING the encryption; modifying a DVD player to allow it to skip over junk is technically not illegal. Also, having a program on your PC that allows it to play any DVD is also not illegal. The problem is when someone using the access ability on a PC in conjunction with a copying program. In that case, a copy is produced illegally. Still, there is another catch. It is technically not illegal to POSSESS such a copy, only to MAKE such a copy. That is why the FBI generally only pursues those who SELL or mass distribute copies.

The lastest DVDs from paramount have ads -not trailers- that are currently skippable, but there is no warning you are going to recieve ads on the packaging, which is against the law. So call the FCC. I am with the fellow up above, I will start thinking about ripping Blu-ray and regular DVDs. Remember when Cable started up, they claimed there would be adless programming. I watch anything on Spike or USA and they even have large 'bugs' they call them, during the show, they conusume upto a third of the screen. Its quite annoying and my basic cable bill is $60 a month, for ads? Who needs HIDEF to watch ads?

I buy DVD's so I can veiw a movie or program when I want, without time wasting commercials. If they have too, let E'm make a DVD thats all about commericals, Ad's, etc. & see how many are sold. Better yet, put those Ad's on Toilet paper, you'll get more exposure.

@ lastguyin2005 When people complain about ads before films they typically aren't talking about movie previews, they are talking about actual commercial advertising. Here it seems like you can't see a movie without also getting an ad for the Marine Corps. When it comes to DVDs, if they start injecting ads into them it will only increase piracy to say nothing of the boycotts that would ensue, not only of the DVDs, but whoever the advertisers are.

  • 25 Posted by jake4dave on Thu Sep 3, 2009 4:27PM EDT Report Abuse

The more ads there are, the more piracy will happen.
