Back in the day, the big players in the cell phone arena held their fire until spring, when the curtain rises on the bi-annual CTIA wireless conference. Lately however, a little electronics show in Vegas—the eight-headed beast known as Consumer Electronics Show—has stolen CTIA's thunder. Here's a sneak preview of what to expect come January, including buzz of a touch-screen (maybe) BlackBerry, a possible new slider from Helio, and more.
CES 2007 served as the launching pad for several hot new phones (remember the mobile TV handsets from LG and Samsung?), and I'm expecting more of the same for the 2008 edition. The big phone manufacturers have been tight-lipped about their CES lineups, but a few interesting rumors have bubbled up to the surface.
Touch-screen BlackBerry?
One of the most intriguing is word, courtesy of The Boy Genius Report, of a new BlackBerry: the 9000 (or the 9000 series, to be exact), which is rumored to come with a speedy Intel XScale processor, HSDPA access (which would make it the first BlackBerry capable of running on 3.5G GSM networks), Wi-Fi, GPS, a full gigabyte of onboard memory, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and a jumbo 480-by-320-pixel screen. Pretty nice, but here's the hottest morsel about the 9000: It might be the first BlackBerry to chuck the keypad for a full-on touch screen. That said, I'm hearing conflicting reports about whether the 9000 actually ditches the physical keypad, so don't get your hopes up.
Here's another interesting rumor that might see daylight at CES: A new line of Motorola phones—and no, I'm not talking the RAZR3. Word has it that Moto may soon unveil the ZiNE: a new series of touch-screen multimedia handsets with Wi-Fi, GPS, and eight-megapixel cameras. Gizmodo reports that Motorola has gone so far as to file a trademark for the "ZiNE" name, so there is a bit of substance behind the buzz. Will the supposed ZiNE phones arrive in time for CES? We'll have to wait and see.
Rumored Helio "Mysto" might materialize
Helio's been known to make waves at CES, and it may do so again with the rumored Mysto. CrunchGear got its hands on spy shots of the alleged, Samsung-made slider, which I'm guessing will boast features such as Helio's cool, GPS-aided Buddy Beacon, plus streaming audio, music downloads, and 3G access. The Mysto rumors have been percolating for a couple of months now, so the phone may be ripe for a CES debut.
In addition to new handsets, CES will be buzzing with talk of three big stories that, taken together, could fundamentally change the wireless business in the United States: specifically, Google's proposed open-source Android platform (and the prospect of Android-powered phones in mid-2008), Verizon's just-announced pledge to open its network to third-party handsets and applications (which may—or may not—lead to more phone and app choices for Verizon subscribers), and January's FCC auction of the 700MHz wireless spectrum (bidders include such 800-pound gorillas as Google, Verizon Wireless, and AT&T). Likely cocktail-party discussions: Is Google's Android just smoke and mirrors? Is Verizon only paying lip service to the idea of open networks? Open questions all, but it's clear that the old "the carrier is king" notion here in the States is poised for a major shake-up.
iPhone 2.0?
Of course, the elephant in the room comes courtesy of a company that won't even be exhibiting at CES. Macworld 2008 is set for January 15, just days after after the festivities in Vegas have come to a close, and all eyes are on Steve Jobs, who may—or may not—have a new iPhone to announce. The CEO of AT&T just confirmed that a 3G iPhone is in the works for 2008, so there's a chance that the iPhone 2.0 will be ready for its close-up in time for Jobs' Macworld keynote. The announcement of the original iPhone stopped CES dead in its tracks last January, so I'm sure everyone in the cell phone industry—whether they admit it or not—will be looking over their shoulders for the looming news from San Francisco.
That's my (long-winded) take on what we might see from cell phones at CES. What are you hoping will come out of the show?

I do believe that the I-phone is the cell phone in the coming future......So I am very excited about the idea of the "3" Apple I-phone..... It is very easy for the comsumer to use, and with A.T.T. at it's side, is now in command........

hmm...i dont know what's all the fuss about. i've been using 2nd gen HTC's phone (touch screen/ mp4/ camera/ wifi/ windows6/ and all dat shebang-rubbish that you can stuff in a phone) for the longest time - so iphone, helio, and whatever not as far as i can see are actually all hyped-up copycats. There's nothing new about any of them at all. hehe,i mean no offense though but after htc - iphone, bberry and the rest dont seem all that great. seriously..i think its all promotion and marketing hoohahs.
Expect JPHONE (JavaTM Phone) from SUN Microsystems in 2008 running 8 application threads - that's the fastest you can expect in 2008. http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/11/samsung-sun-teaming-up-for-java-phone/

I was waiting for real eye ball poping, shocking good PDA phone, and have read many web info about those phones. Most of them are just promotional advertising. All PDA phones existing now has pros and cons. Can any company make real outstanding PDA phones? Will the next CES show shock me or not?
Please email me after you find real good, outstanding PDA phone. Thanks
I think its funny that they linked to BGR on the BB 9000 when he has already debunked it having a touch screen. Or the new Heilo phone thats already been released in the us.
yeah the mysto is out...shows how much this writer knows about the new tech
After reading through all of the posts I come away with the idea that what everyone wants is the latest desktop computer, fully loaded, that they can wear on themselves and makes phone calls. This is undoubtedly where the hi-tech industry is going. I know for a fact that quantum computers is about 50 years in the future. In the meantime a phone that gives me crytal clear reception and doesn't drop my calls at a price that I can afford without having to budget it in would be nice. One commercial I've seen recently, sorry, I don't watch much TV, boasts that my car can now run Windows Synch. I haven't looked into that very deeply yet but the thought of my car running any brand of Windows is NOT something I am comfortable with. Windows is, by far, the worst Graphic User Interface disguised as an operating system I have ever had the misfortune to be involved with, and I've been involved with Windows since before 3.1. Between hacks and patches and spam and zero-day virus attacks, Windows is awful; and the thought that it will be interfacing with my car scares me enough to make me want to restore a Studebaker and drive that. I think that a touch screen cell phone is stupid. I use my cell phone as my primary phone. I find that my 3 year old Motorola works just fine. While my new Motorola Razor is very chic it doesn't have the volume of my old phone and I'm forced to get Blue Tooth in order to hear my calls clearly. There is no guarantee that a Bluetooth headset will give me a louder reception but it's the only game in town since the Razor uses a mini USB port for power and an off the shelf, wired headset is unavailable. So, now I'm forced to buy equipment I don't like in order to hear what the person on the other end is saying. If I had to pick just one "smart" feature it would be GPS. At least the Razor has a decent tactile response so I can dial it without looking at the key pad. But my real gripe is the idea of having Windows interfacing with my car. That just scares the heck out of me. Orpheuse
I like BlackBerry. In addition, tell me please, where to see some reviews for Canon SX100 http://www.canonsx100.com
Here's the thing ladies, We're compacting our technologies. It's MORE important to have every form of media/communication at your beck and call. The reason smartphones have all these bells and whistles is so you can capture a moment, send it to your friends and family, research what you're capturing online and then find a bar in the area to talk about it later. Seriously, I'm amazed by what cell phone companies are packing into these things. I say keep it up! You might loose signal here and there but that's just a price you pay for the ability to carry ONE device and not 3 or 4. I can't wait for video calling!!! Bring it on!!!! the revolution will be televised.
Yeah Orp..I agree, not only is Windows a scarey thought when it comes to stability but I'm pretty sure that at this point...the government is able to track your everymove anyway...@ work with log in's and passwords, IP address's,and @ home(your PC)...and your global positioning @ Barnes & Nobles with cell phone GPS and signaling...hey even with Onstar...but Ford says lets one-up them and let everyone's driving habits be stored on a giant govt. database with all of the other "secret" info were stealing from them as you read this..Good luck with your new shiney tracking devices, oops i mean cell phones...
Im hoping for a CDMA/GSM world phone with gps, wifi, bluetooth and decent business apps, syncability with google calendar and microsoft outlook and a decent web browser. I know...I'm asking for everything!
