Survey: Most Chatters Unhappy with Cell Service

Cell phone service blows—or at least, that's what more than half of the respondents said in Consumer Reports' annual survey of subscribers. Surprised? I didn't think so.

The report, due for publication in the January 2008 issue of Consumer Reports, found that "fewer than half" of the 47,000 subscribers surveyed were "completely or very satisfied" with their service—a rating that makes cell service among the "lower-rated" services that Consumer Reports covers. Ouch.

Among the findings:

  • Alltel and Verizon Wireless earned kudos for connectivity and coverage, while Sprint got tagged for dropped calls, T-Mobile was dinged for spotty coverage in some cities, and AT&T was called to the carpet for too much static during calls.
  • None of the U.S. carriers scored well for customer service; only about 40 percent of respondents gave "very helpful" marks to the top-rated carriers (Alltel, T-Mobile, and Verizon), with Sprint falling to the bottom of the heap with a mere 20 percent "very helpful" rating. (I'll second that; how many times have I called Sprint customer service, only to be told I'm facing a 25-minute wait?)
  • One in seven said they wanted to switch carriers but decided to stay put because of the hefty early termination fees. The good news is that all four of the major U.S. carriers have agreed to start pro-rating termination fees; the bad news is that if you signed a contract before the pro-rated policies went into effect (anytime after November 16, 2006 for Verizon Wireless; AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile won't offer pro-rated fees until 2008), you're out of luck.
  • 60 percent of respondents who changed their service plans said they were forced to extend their contracts (and others may not even have realize that their contracts were extended, according to the survey). Again, some of the bigger carriers have announced that they'll start letting customers change their plans without contract extensions; however, the report cites several special offers from the carriers that have sneaky contract-extension clauses hidden in the fine print.

Overall, it's a pretty sad picture, although Consumer Reports notes a few developments—including the new pro-rated termination fee policies and Verizon's (sketchy) pledge to allow third-party phones on its network—with guarded optimism.

Satified with your carrier? Want to switch? Want to toss your phone out the window? Sound off!

I am happy where I am - I own my cellphone and I like my plan. If I upgrade my phone, I buy a new unlocked one so I dont end up with contract extensions - and I have no contract anyways. I would like some of the newer services, but I am not about to sign on for 2 years to get it.

If most of the KNUCKLE HEADS out there needed this distraction People WAKE UP 95% of the crap I hear you discussing on your cell phones is a waste of space. You need tyo go back to the Old Fashioned way Get a Home Phone For less than $25.00 P/M. And yes I Have a Cell it is used for Emergency calls only. and yes it does get recharged from a card. I refused to keep paying the carriers a minimum fee to be cool and still not use their minimum # of Minutes. Some of the conversations I hear on Public transit would shock your ears. To the Dummy walking down the street with your Bluetooth headset who I believe is crazy because they are talking to themselves. Get a life take that conversation someplace private. Everytime one of these carriers gets a new Phone for the Companyies that produce them. [people rush to have the coolest gadget) resulting in higher bills and extended contracts. Sine I have vented about this now I can go and get back in the 21st Century Awardsr1

Sprint has the worse service I have ever encountered. I live in a big city and should have plenty of cell coverage but my calls are dropped so much, and it is mainly to other Sprint customers. I had to get a land line at my house because I can not use my phone there without the call being dropped. My home is in the middle of our city but not down town where I would expect some interference. When my contract is up they're gone. As for their phones they are crap. I will buy my own and do the prepaid thing. The heck with their contracts.

I switched to AT&T from my pay as you go phone. Big mistake. The connections were terrible, constantly dropped, and I racked up a $1900 bill. Also, the Razor they gave me puts off so much EMF (electromagnetic radiation) that speakers and land lines are disabled when they are in use from the intense EMF pollution they emit. These phones should be recalled. They are dangerous as well as terrible connections when coupled with AT&T's service. I'm switching back to my reliable Sprint-based carrier and my cheap pay as you go phone which works and sounds 10 times better that AT&T's -- and doesn't fry everyone in the room with radiation when when it rings!

I have a Cingular phone, and I hate the service as well. I also have a Palm Treo 750 version, and some of the calls come through and some don't; the phone will freeze up most of the times, and it just pisses me off with the whole thing. If I could, I would just go without a phone competely.
