There's nothing sexy about backup and storage, but as we all store more and more content in digital form, the search for the ultimate storage solution becomes a holy grail of some sort. The newly redesigned SimpleDrive Desktop Family of 3.5-inch hard disks offers a combination software and services making it a compelling solution for anyone whose library of important digital stuff is mushrooming.

Fabrik, a software and services company, recently acquired the consumer portion of SimpleTech, creators of DRAM-flash and hard drives. Newly united, the duo's first creation is a family of  color-coded back-up storage solutions. Sleek, colorful, and highly portable, the drives were designed by Pininfarina, the same design firm behind the design of the Ferrari. Whether you're using the new drives for add-on storage or as a back-up device, or simply using the 2GB of virtual storage that's included with the MyFabrik service, you'll find the software attractive and well integrated.

MyFabrik, the web-based storage component, includes an interface that makes it easy to do things like tag your multimedia, embed content in a blog, or create a web site to be shared with friends and family. According to Fabrik COO, Mike Williams, the color coded drives are designed to be fully integrated with the Fabrik software so that the process of working with all of your digital media becomes easier.

SimpleDrive uses USB 2.0 (and FireWire on the Mac version). The included One-Click software lets you set up everything from daily backups to transferring files or burning DVDs. SimpleDrives are available in various capacities (coded by color) beginning at 160GB ($99) to 500GB ($199) all the way to one terabyte (approximately $400 when it ships in May).

The combination of a personal web space, backup, and transfer tools with a solid hard drive makes SimpleDrive a value proposition.
