I played with the new $99 Sidekick iD for a few days, trying to imagine my life as a hipster, texting friends and surfing the web. My imagination came up short. That's when I turned to the kids—all in their early twenties—to set me straight about the legacy and the limitations of the Sidekick iD.
In 2002, the original Sidekick featured a black and white display and a full-size QWERTY keyboard. It was the full sized keyboard (all the better for texting you, my dear) that garnered the affection of the texting/surfing crowd.
Next came a color version of the Sidekick. Paris Hilton lost hers and suddenly everyone else wanted theirs. The Sidekick II was a hit, albeit at $300, an expensive one.
Sidekick 3: "I Never Hated a Phone so Much"
The Sidekick 3, according to my youth connections, was an abject failure. Like its ancestors, it has a phone, web browser, email manager, and camera. It also added a faster processor, support for a faster data network, and a music player. My reviewers say the phone was bulky and the trackball never worked for very long without gumming up. They say the phone's display screen was terrible and, worst of all, the voice quality of the phone was bad. At $300, the Sidekick 3 is way too expensive. (I'm still not clear whether allowances or odd jobs gave these kids their phone experiences.) One 21-year-old student said, "Uggghhh. I never hated a phone so much."
A Phone of Redemption
The new Sidekick iD, says the same 21-year-old, is a phone of redemption. She's so savvy about this phone thing that she explained how she saw this as T-Mobile's chance to endear itself to the texting crowd again. T-Mobile cut the price to under $100 and cut a lot of the features, too. The iD, unlike the Sidekick 3, has no camera, MP3 player, Bluetooth, or SD slot. It's got these plastic-y looking bumper guard type edges that come in different colors, allowing you to style your own.
The two best things about the iD are that it's only $99 and it's really good at the things the Sidekicks are notoriously good at: emailing, texting, and surfing the web. The iD makes things like importing your addresses into the phone easy and setting up text messaging trivially easy.
Like the Sidekick 3, the iD uses a trackball to navigate the menus. The trackball can feel a bit loose, causing me to scroll past my menu targets. The color display screen is good, though not as bright and clear as phones like the Treo and Pearl.
The bottom line? The Sidekick iD maintains what makes the Sidekicks distinctive: its swivel open, pop-up, and start typing screen. Reviewers call it the kiddie BlackBerry. But, I wouldn't buy this phone for my kids because it's a better texting and surfing machine than it is a phone. And they wouldn't buy it on their own because for $99 they'd want a built-in camera phone. And, if money is really an object for a family, they'll do better than $99 with a host of inexpensive phones.
The new Sidekick iD will appeal most to those still enamored of photos like the one here from Geeksugar. Sidekick iD is an "it" for texting maniacs or those still reading Tiger Beat.

i work for t mobile and not a day goes buy when i dont hear a customer rave about how great there darn sk3 is. my only complaint is bluetooth, u cant share downloads!
I've read all of the comments here and one thing is for sure --- people are passionate about their Sidekicks. Thanks for a great discussion, Robin
ya dis phone is nice
i don't think its the phone its the people using the handset. and the only people that comment are the people that usually have something bad to say. so if this many people have a problem with it just image how many people love the sidekick and don't have problems with it. and the reason its so expensive is because of the many things it can do. sell a sidekick for $29.99 like the samsung stripe... give me a break!
over glorified?.... the treo is the biggest piece of crap ever..... and hard to type on at that...... get a real keyboard man.... and the "ID" is not for ppl who want to roll with the big dogs.... REAL big dogs own both b/c the id is IDEAL for goin out with and not fearing having to break ur 350 dollar sk3
i have a sidekick id and have had it for over a month, personally i love it. everyone has come up to me and said "i hate the id, it doesnt have a camera" seriously i never even used my camera on my old flip phone anyway, i just had one to have one. I have a digital camera and an ipod, why do i need one on my phone too. its got the same features as the SD3 only w/o bluetooth, camera and mp3. if u want a good phone for less, the id is perfect =]
SK3* not SD3 lol
I have the SKiD and its great for texting, AIM, email, and browsing. I don't use the phone bcuz I an LG CU500 with cingular(AT&T) that has mp3, camera, and bluetooth plus excellent sound quality when making calls. So i pretty much have the best of both worlds. And i know no lil kid ever thought of ballin' like that with two phones......HOLLA!!!
alright well im a 16 year-old male with a Sk3 and i love it. i dont see why yahoo is bashing it so much its such a awesome phone. i really got it for the texting and the AIM and internet. but i never had a problem with the phone at all and im on the phone alot lol. the only thing i can complain about is that T-mobile dosent get as great service as cingular but its not that bad. the camera could be a little better but its a cell phone but whatever get a dig camera if you wanna take good pics
dude, the sk3 is awesome, and thats all i gotta say =]]
I've gone through four phones within 6 months (if i get my new sidekick3 in a week, that'll be number 5). I've gone through the razor, a motorola A320 (or whatever it was), the blackberry pearl and just recently, my sidekick iD. Honestly, I can say I'm unsatisfied with the iD. The features, except for the text messaging and internet chatting, are lackluster. It's pretty much the bare bones of the regular sidekick. Unless you're just a text messaging, internet chatting, or e-mail guru person, then the sidekick iD is for you. I needed my camera and EDGE support included, which is why I'm upgrading to sidekick 3 (I wanted to trade my iD with my friend, but she said no). As to the comment that the SK3 is overglorified, ALL PDA's are overglorified (which is why so many actually have them). I mean, I had my blackberry for only a couple of months and I got bored with the features. But that's just me. If the SK3 doesn't do it for me, then I'm getting my iPhone (after it's glitches are known, of course).
i love my sidekick id cell phone it is cheap
I love the sidekick 3 . The sidekick id dose not have as many features so that is why i like the sidekick 3 better. I really want the sidekick soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad. but it is a little pricey! But i think i will still get one.
the sk2 is a great phone if you work or play hard "the sk2 is tough, hard" the sk3 has a lil more features but easy to break. the sk3 battery doesnt last very long and buttons tend to get stuck or break off or get dirt under them an the button becomes useless dont get me wrong there good aim, text, internet, email phones but i hate talking to people that have them its loud, static, skips, can't hear the other person. also im glad they got rid of the camera its the worst camera ive ever use on a cellphone... still i liked the memory card, your could add alot of pics, emails, texts, themes, more application, etc
Don't he sidekick.......stay away!!!!!!!!!! go get the iphone
i got the sidekick id about a month ago and i heart it. the only prob with it was that i had to pay an extra $20 a month for email and internet. it was totaly worth it though
