Sidekick iD: The Kids Give Me the Real Skinny

I played with the new $99 Sidekick iD for a few days, trying to imagine my life as a hipster, texting friends and surfing the web. My imagination came up short. That's when I turned to the kids—all in their early twenties—to set me straight about the legacy and the limitations of the Sidekick iD.

In 2002, the original Sidekick featured a black and white display and a full-size QWERTY keyboard. It was the full sized keyboard (all the better for texting you, my dear) that garnered the affection of the texting/surfing crowd.

Next came a color version of the Sidekick. Paris Hilton lost hers and suddenly everyone else wanted theirs. The Sidekick II was a hit, albeit at $300, an expensive one.

Sidekick 3: "I Never Hated a Phone so Much"

The Sidekick 3, according to my youth connections, was an abject failure. Like its ancestors, it has a phone, web browser, email manager, and camera. It also added a faster processor, support for a faster data network, and a music player. My reviewers say the phone was bulky and the trackball never worked for very long without gumming up. They say the phone's display screen was terrible and, worst of all, the voice quality of the phone was bad. At $300, the Sidekick 3 is way too expensive. (I'm still not clear whether allowances or odd jobs gave these kids their phone experiences.) One 21-year-old student said, "Uggghhh. I never hated a phone so much."

A Phone of Redemption

The new Sidekick iD, says the same 21-year-old, is a phone of redemption. She's so savvy about this phone thing that she explained how she saw this as T-Mobile's chance to endear itself to the texting crowd again. T-Mobile cut the price to under $100 and cut a lot of the features, too. The iD, unlike the Sidekick 3, has no camera, MP3 player, Bluetooth, or SD slot. It's got these plastic-y looking bumper guard type edges that come in different colors, allowing you to style your own.

The two best things about the iD are that it's only $99 and it's really good at the things the Sidekicks are notoriously good at: emailing, texting, and surfing the web. The iD makes things like importing your addresses into the phone easy and setting up text messaging trivially easy.

Like the Sidekick 3, the iD uses a trackball to navigate the menus. The trackball can feel a bit loose, causing me to scroll past my menu targets. The color display screen is good, though not as bright and clear as phones like the Treo and Pearl.

The bottom line? The Sidekick iD maintains what makes the Sidekicks distinctive: its swivel open, pop-up, and start typing screen. Reviewers call it the kiddie BlackBerry. But, I wouldn't buy this phone for my kids because it's a better texting and surfing machine than it is a phone. And they wouldn't buy it on their own because for $99 they'd want a built-in camera phone. And, if money is really an object for a family, they'll do better than $99 with a host of inexpensive phones.

The new Sidekick iD will appeal most to those still enamored of photos like the one here from Geeksugar. Sidekick iD is an "it" for texting maniacs or those still reading Tiger Beat.

I think the SK3 is the best and so as the new SK. I think the article over reacted about how the SK3 is the worst phone.

I havent owned a sidekick id yet. But I like my sidekick 2. sure the the sidekick 3 has mp3 and a camera but we all know what is the main purpose of the sidekick. What I love bout my sk2 is the rubbery buttons doesnt fade, not only that but Im a long nailed person its easier to punch the keys. On a sidekick 3 the buttons are more slippery. However, the sidekick 2 lasts longer. The sk3 has gotten so many complains about it braking easily. Its way to fragile of a phone!Who need a mp3 on the phone anyway? thats why you have an ipod!!!

I've had SKI, II and 3. I've loved them all. I'm not an over entitled teenager, either. It replaced my laptop on trips - it's been a life saver in many ways. The screen is clear - they've all been clear. I dunno - maybe if you'd wipe your hands after eating french fries and ketchup the dang track ball wouldn't gum up. Never had a problem with it. It's wrong to categorize it in the teenybopper genre. It works very well for ADULTS and professionals. I'm able to keep up with my work flawlessly, thanks to it. The phone works just fine. I always use my headsets with all phones and so this is no different. God, people are such whiners. Get a life.

Uhh my Tmobile MDA is waaay better than the SK3 not only is it faster than the sk3, it has a slide out keyboard and the best piece.. its a touch screen. My internet is "real" internet not the tmobile sidekick internet and it has wi-fi capabilities... windows mobile with all the windows programs (word, excel, powerpoint). I was going to buy the sk3 but SOOO many people have it, i couldnt bare with not being original. Now that tmobile is coming out w/ a newer version of the MDA im gonna do some upgrading.. i mean ive had this model since april..lol

considering how many people have recently captured some amazing shots with their camera phones, I can't for the life of me figure out why any one even manufactures phones without cameras these days, not to mention why anyone would buy one.....

Kids? 21yr olds are not kids and they defiantly are for the most part not making money off allowance and odd-jobs. I couldn't read past the stereotypes in this article to see what it was really about.

Im actually glad they came out with a new sk because now its cheaper, and it seems like its the same quality. At first I wanted the SK3 but most of my friends were having problems with it...so maybe thi0s one is better. I think that I may try it. My brother(18 has a SK3 and he loves it, thats all he does is play with it!!I(13)just stare at him like..........what are you staring at? Is it really that astonishing?

i always wanted an sk when i saw the sk2.i decided to get an sk3 this past spring and i loved it.used it everywhere i went and aim on it all the time.the iDs are ugly and look old fashion..why did tmobile decide to come out with something like that.plus on the sk3 u can change the sensitivity on the buttons and the scroll ball so it doesnt scroll too fast or gets every letter you were to push when u are typing.there is no problem wit the sk3's.i recently broke the screen on my sk3 just last week right before my bday and i was sad so i decided to get the D-Wade edition sk3 and i freakin love it. many ppl dont like it but its one of a kind and i havent seen that many people have it...either way the original sk3 and the Dwade edition are both good phones/messaging machines...yea the internet and stuff cuts out a couple of times when im using it but hey..everything is not perfect out there.treo's and blackberry's are way too pricey for my taste..yea its a good phone and all but not for me yet..maybe in a year or so :).if people were to get the iD's they should just get the sk2 instead.sk2 looks better even though its the second gen of the sk's. the iD's look plain cheap im sorry.
