I played with the new $99 Sidekick iD for a few days, trying to imagine my life as a hipster, texting friends and surfing the web. My imagination came up short. That's when I turned to the kids—all in their early twenties—to set me straight about the legacy and the limitations of the Sidekick iD.
In 2002, the original Sidekick featured a black and white display and a full-size QWERTY keyboard. It was the full sized keyboard (all the better for texting you, my dear) that garnered the affection of the texting/surfing crowd.
Next came a color version of the Sidekick. Paris Hilton lost hers and suddenly everyone else wanted theirs. The Sidekick II was a hit, albeit at $300, an expensive one.
Sidekick 3: "I Never Hated a Phone so Much"
The Sidekick 3, according to my youth connections, was an abject failure. Like its ancestors, it has a phone, web browser, email manager, and camera. It also added a faster processor, support for a faster data network, and a music player. My reviewers say the phone was bulky and the trackball never worked for very long without gumming up. They say the phone's display screen was terrible and, worst of all, the voice quality of the phone was bad. At $300, the Sidekick 3 is way too expensive. (I'm still not clear whether allowances or odd jobs gave these kids their phone experiences.) One 21-year-old student said, "Uggghhh. I never hated a phone so much."
A Phone of Redemption
The new Sidekick iD, says the same 21-year-old, is a phone of redemption. She's so savvy about this phone thing that she explained how she saw this as T-Mobile's chance to endear itself to the texting crowd again. T-Mobile cut the price to under $100 and cut a lot of the features, too. The iD, unlike the Sidekick 3, has no camera, MP3 player, Bluetooth, or SD slot. It's got these plastic-y looking bumper guard type edges that come in different colors, allowing you to style your own.
The two best things about the iD are that it's only $99 and it's really good at the things the Sidekicks are notoriously good at: emailing, texting, and surfing the web. The iD makes things like importing your addresses into the phone easy and setting up text messaging trivially easy.
Like the Sidekick 3, the iD uses a trackball to navigate the menus. The trackball can feel a bit loose, causing me to scroll past my menu targets. The color display screen is good, though not as bright and clear as phones like the Treo and Pearl.
The bottom line? The Sidekick iD maintains what makes the Sidekicks distinctive: its swivel open, pop-up, and start typing screen. Reviewers call it the kiddie BlackBerry. But, I wouldn't buy this phone for my kids because it's a better texting and surfing machine than it is a phone. And they wouldn't buy it on their own because for $99 they'd want a built-in camera phone. And, if money is really an object for a family, they'll do better than $99 with a host of inexpensive phones.
The new Sidekick iD will appeal most to those still enamored of photos like the one here from Geeksugar. Sidekick iD is an "it" for texting maniacs or those still reading Tiger Beat.

ron benitez... ive sent pics from my sidekick many times. maybe you have a faulty sk3?? o.0
i love my SK3, no too many people have it which is cool, yeah its has some flaws like all phones, but this is great for texting, email, web, the camera can be iffy, but over all the phone is sleek and i dont use it all for talking, so that elimnates that issue. I think the SKID is a knockoff and looks cheap... ill pass and stick to my $300 SK3, whick is the real thing!
Mkay. i agree with some of the other people the SKID is a rip off. if it cant take pics then count me out. i dont got a cell yet but this acticle helped me because now i know stuff bout the SKs. i mite get a 2 or 3 def not an SKID. With my citcumstances than $300 isnt that much. I have seen flip phones that had better features than a SKID. Thank you yahoo for helping me know about this device. The SKs sound addicting but that aint too bad. Thanks again Lindsey
omg i was dying for a sk3. i cant believe its crap. atleast i found out soon.but if its so crappy y duz it cost so much? that dosnt make sense!
this is the number one sk3 its a good use. my phone is better than all of my friends and they hate me for that but i like ti share so i let them use it when they need it. THEY LOVE IT
One word: Duh! Sidekicks are all about writing/typing and the Id just made it cheaper. Ok they maybe overglorified but they are racking in the money. So like the article said,, if your a teen its the greatest thing ever made besides the part about no camera. Only reason why i dont have it.
I just got the new helio ocean and is is one of the best phones ever comparing to the sidekick the sidekick in my opinion is no match for the ocean it is great not as big its alot faster on the internet my sister has the sidekick and she wants to get rid of it for the ocean.
Sorry but I don't agree with the article here at all. I'm a 42 year old female and started out with the SK2. I now have a SK3 and love it even more (if possible) than the older one. I am never without it. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best phone out there. Until someone can top this, I'll stay with TMobile and their Sidekicks.
i'm a 32 year old guy and i use SK iD and i have tried every phone out there. i got rid of my SK3 cause my new job wont let me have a camera phone. SK iD is perfect since almost everyone i know now texts more then talking. i use AIM on it everyday to talk to my family and friends. and it only costs me $20 extra for unlimited texts, aim, and internet. this review also is unbelivable since i know 8 other people with sidekicks ranging from 19 - 33 and they all have told me it's the best phone and the easiest understanding phone they have used.
I have a sidekick 3, I love it. I can talk to my friends on IM or text. However, the sidekick id looks pretty interesting..im tempted to ask for it!! The main reason I asked my parents for the sidekick was for the texting and the internet and so on and so forth. And im a kid with the sidekick 3, sooo it doesn't mean kids cant have it. :)
i have a sidekick 3 and i love it, it works soo well and is the apple of everyones eye but the sidekicks better look out for the iphone cuz it gonna be hott!!!
I have a SK3 and i love it....I have always wanted a Sidekick. I love that is so easy to txt and surf the web. The only thing that I can say everyone has a problem with it is the battery life!! Even if you charge it all night by 12pm I have 2 bars missing. Well maybe that's just me because I use my phone a lot.
shure the sk3 hace some problems but most people dont even use it for calling..i do everything but call...and if i do, i use a bluetooth...witch the ID dosent have
I don't have one but want one sooo bad!!!
SK's are so overrated... Ima stick wit my Pocket PC because I like to get my phone calls and text messages! They never have service and most people jus use to for AIM. My phone has everything and more than a SK3... Ima stick wit Verizon!
opinions, opinions. Who cares what your kid thinks, really....cmon
and i thought tht i liked the sidekicks. well i guess i dont know! thanks for tha heads up and keeping me from makin a big mistake! :)
wow the side kick is like the coolest phone everrrr, i LOVE IT! and now it's in color thats even cooler.
i've never encountered any of the problems with my sk3 that you described. i talk on it all the time and have nothing negative to say about my phone or any of its features. also, tmobile's sk data plan is aces!

Whattt??? The SK3 is the a tight phone! I really like the phone quality and i'm really overall satisfied with it. Just like in everything though, the phone does have some faults. The first and most important to me, is the camera on the phone. It is kind of bad, i really dont like taking many pictures on it, i'd rather just use my regular dig cam. Besides the cam, the next thing on the list is that you cant receive photos or send photo messages. This sucks! If i ever, which is rare, that i take a pic and want to send it to someone, i cant, i have to like load it on my comp and email it. By then, i'd rather drive to my friends house and show them. Anyway, besides that, I love this phone. I am so glad they have the sidekick thing where its 20 bucks for unlimited browser and unlimited texts because I do text a lottttt and browse. Anyway, i think the ID is just the cheap knockoff of the SK! Well hope that helped!!!
