I played with the new $99 Sidekick iD for a few days, trying to imagine my life as a hipster, texting friends and surfing the web. My imagination came up short. That's when I turned to the kids—all in their early twenties—to set me straight about the legacy and the limitations of the Sidekick iD.
In 2002, the original Sidekick featured a black and white display and a full-size QWERTY keyboard. It was the full sized keyboard (all the better for texting you, my dear) that garnered the affection of the texting/surfing crowd.
Next came a color version of the Sidekick. Paris Hilton lost hers and suddenly everyone else wanted theirs. The Sidekick II was a hit, albeit at $300, an expensive one.
Sidekick 3: "I Never Hated a Phone so Much"
The Sidekick 3, according to my youth connections, was an abject failure. Like its ancestors, it has a phone, web browser, email manager, and camera. It also added a faster processor, support for a faster data network, and a music player. My reviewers say the phone was bulky and the trackball never worked for very long without gumming up. They say the phone's display screen was terrible and, worst of all, the voice quality of the phone was bad. At $300, the Sidekick 3 is way too expensive. (I'm still not clear whether allowances or odd jobs gave these kids their phone experiences.) One 21-year-old student said, "Uggghhh. I never hated a phone so much."
A Phone of Redemption
The new Sidekick iD, says the same 21-year-old, is a phone of redemption. She's so savvy about this phone thing that she explained how she saw this as T-Mobile's chance to endear itself to the texting crowd again. T-Mobile cut the price to under $100 and cut a lot of the features, too. The iD, unlike the Sidekick 3, has no camera, MP3 player, Bluetooth, or SD slot. It's got these plastic-y looking bumper guard type edges that come in different colors, allowing you to style your own.
The two best things about the iD are that it's only $99 and it's really good at the things the Sidekicks are notoriously good at: emailing, texting, and surfing the web. The iD makes things like importing your addresses into the phone easy and setting up text messaging trivially easy.
Like the Sidekick 3, the iD uses a trackball to navigate the menus. The trackball can feel a bit loose, causing me to scroll past my menu targets. The color display screen is good, though not as bright and clear as phones like the Treo and Pearl.
The bottom line? The Sidekick iD maintains what makes the Sidekicks distinctive: its swivel open, pop-up, and start typing screen. Reviewers call it the kiddie BlackBerry. But, I wouldn't buy this phone for my kids because it's a better texting and surfing machine than it is a phone. And they wouldn't buy it on their own because for $99 they'd want a built-in camera phone. And, if money is really an object for a family, they'll do better than $99 with a host of inexpensive phones.
The new Sidekick iD will appeal most to those still enamored of photos like the one here from Geeksugar. Sidekick iD is an "it" for texting maniacs or those still reading Tiger Beat.

This is the first review I've ever read on Yahoo that has been right on the mark.
The brand new HELIO OCEAN is going to knock the Sidekick out of the water! The HELIO OCEAN has a dual-slide, full qwerty keyboard, plus a consolidated inbox with all your IM's, texts, and emails in one place. It also has a camera, 2 hours of video camera, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, 3-D video games, MP3, can play full length music videos, Helio TV, Helio music, MySpace portal, and and HTML browser with lighting internet speeds. It does everything but feed the dog and cat. I just got mine from FYE last week and I love it!
I have a SK3 and a Treo and love them both... The sidekick has a less expensive usage rate via plans than the Treo internet plans... Sure the SK3 has it's issues but T-Mobile is great if you have insurance and replaces the phone without a question so I have managed to get a new phone about every 5 months.
the three is awul i gave mine away. the id is a rehash of the one. im through with sidekick but ya gota admit they have the best data plan out there
I love my SIDEKICK III... the SK id is for broke losers!! LOL sidekick3 is for stunners like me and people who can actually afford it!!! hey its a celebrity phone and i get plenty attention from it!!! i love it!!!
my connection when it comes to talking suckss
Say what you will but I LOVE MY SIDEKICK 3. I think its worth every bit of $200. I have several phones and none compare. Now whats an overpriced phone is the RAZR.
well my sidekick3 is the best eventhough i went over my minutes but i still love it and the color that i have it know is pink my favorite color.
but what do u do with your ipod ????It became all too much 4 me lol. 2 much stuff to cary around unless your a tech geek then your in there
Does the SK3 have the push technology where emails sent to my regular email will forward on to the SK3 automatically?
I love my sk3!! I used to have a razor but it wasnt as good as the sk3. The iD, is just a cheap version of the sk3...it looks like a rough draft of the sk3. If you put the 2 phones next 2 each other you will see that the sk3 looks way better. Besides if ppl want to change the look of their sk3, they can customize their own skin & then put a case on it...Plain & simple!!
That looks like its a better PDA than a phone. It would be like holding a keyboard up to your head. Thumbs down, I don't care what celeb has the stupid thing. Celeberties are a bunch of dumbasses with a lot of money. WHO CARES!
i love my sidekick 3. yes there are problems but hopefully sharp will improve in the next device. its not the worst phone ever. this article makes it sound so so terrible. the phone is so simple to use once you understand the operating system(OS) it has over the air updats so your phone can get updated with new software and abilities over the are for free. the trackball does get dirty its sappost to be a bright white...but not for long. they just need to find a way to remove it and/or clean it. the phone is bulky..but oh well. if you do not like it then dont get it dont complain and moan about it. just leave it be."its bulky" "worst phone ever" "i never hated a phone so much" ...obviously you like the phone but just cant get it if your gonna complain about it!
I cannot believe that they are using a PORN STAR (Jenna Jameson) to promote this phone. What kind of a message is being sent to EVERYONE who sees this advertisement, including CHILDREN and TEENAGERS ? ? ? (No offense Jenna - but you are an ADULT film star, not an advertising magnet for kids)
man i wanted to get a sidekick 3 or the new iD but now im thinking i dont want one.. i dont understand what is wrong with call people? i have never even touched a sidekick and i wanted one but now i might not get one. Thanks so much for not letting me waste my money. thankts again Tyler :-)
I really want me a sidekick and I'll think a sidekick we'll be great
This phone is junk, do not waste you money on it. You would be better of setting fire to $100 dollars.
i want one of those so bad man u wouldnt even kno
I think the new sidekick ID is a great hit even though it thoes'nt have a camera it looks really good and a great hit because its not expensive.

i have skID and ur right its for kids. Im 13 and i cant really afford to pay $200 for a phone when i can get other stuff instead. So ID is for kids and SK3 is for adults. w/e
