Gadgets That Run on Body Heat

No jokes about hot bods, please. All of you warm-blooded folks may have the advantage with this new technology. You may soon be able to power your cell phone, PCs, and other electronics by tapping into your own body heat, and you don't need to be pedaling a stationary bike, walking the treadmill, or otherwise working up a sweat to do it. You can just sit there, couch potato style, and generate enough body heat to keep your gear going.

I stumbled across this tidbit on the Discovery Channel, but the research originates from the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, where they are developing special circuits that use body heat. These could lead to battery-less cell phones and medical monitors that draw energy from their users.

The new circuits utilize the principle of thermoelectric generators (TEG) made from semiconductor elements. According to the scientists, the TEGs extract electrical energy simply from the temperature difference between a hot and a cold environment. Normally, a difference of several tens of degrees would be required in order to generate enough power, but the difference between the body's surface temperature and that of its environment is only a few degrees. To boost the energy, they combined a number of components that store up the energy until there's enough to operate the electronic device.

The photo shows a wireless transmitter being powered by the heat given off by a person's hand via a thermoelectric generator. Can't wait to see if it takes advantage of hot flashes!

A hot flash would equate to a power surge. :P

Interesting to see where this technology will go. This may finally have a good purpose. As in it could give the kind folks who use prosthetic limbs the ability to have fully functional ones. Provided that further technology is developed. This could also lead to humans becoming more versatile in a few regards. Giving the human race the ability to replace body parts if they become too damaged. Or even leading to the day when we can switch out our bodies with full prosthetic bodies. This technology has more applications that simply running small devices. This could solve a lot of problems for a lot of people. One could also be allowing people in a wheel chair to have legs once again. Allowing the blind to see by using digital eyes with a wireless transmitter attached to their brain. I'll have to keep a close eye on this as it develops.

If its possible to power a pc with body heat, well then, why not power a car or cell phone or a printer or a heated blanket or a house or anything that has to do with thermoelectric energy? Maybe if we use this technology to our advantage, we could actually solve a lot of the worlds problems!

Dont think anyones actully noticed this but the guys generating 179mv (wich is less than 2v if im correct) im pritty sure im correct in saying you couldnt even run a avarage PDA phone of that unless you had a serious capacitor, mine runs at 5.5v constantly :( the tecnology looks promising but obviously a way to go yet. ;) keep up the good work geeks lol

Is it an inventive, idea? Yeah, of course. But I could see something like this having very detrimental side affects on the human body. Bio-electricity is a resource that is used more than most people know in their own bodies. I wonder what kind of materials this uses to actually carry the conduct.

Now all it will take is some doctor to come out and say that using your body to power things is bad for you . Just as well just about every food item is either bad for you or causes cancer , of course that changes weekly .

Six billions live bodies (if the animal are added the number will double - increase the temperature of the environment and contribute to the total heating effect taking place on the earth; and most of them use energy resources. This is the first /small try to find ways to use the human heat as an energy sorce! It will have a future.

That's cool, but does it hurt our body. I mean when the electronics charges by our body heat, does it also lower our body heat or something like that. There might be also a possibility that by charging them our own heat, we might get a bit of cancer or diseases of some kind (or not). I'm just saying if this is safe or is it scientifically proven that it's alright.

My computer battery is down to an hour of power instead of 3. I always bring my cord and think of where I am going if I can plug in... This is fantastic! Another way to be free. I was going to buy a back pack or the hand held device for solar power! Which cannot charge a laptop yet. To go out into the world with my iPod, and cell phone without fear of running out of power... Now this! You bet this is a tech toy I want! What else is out there? That we cannot wait to get?

That is totally awesome! With that new gadget we'll not only save up on power and money but we won't have to worry about the battery going flat. ;)

Human body heat used to create electricity? Hmmm.. reminds you a little of the Matrix, no?

  • 82 Posted by morgenm2001 on Thu Sep 3, 2009 7:26PM EDT Report Abuse

Well, since the body produces much heat during sex, then there is much room for commercial electricity producing heat! He he he

this is so necessary. i'm not one to buy first generation gadgets but as soon as this is made available i will try to get one.
