What do you do when million-dollar prizes have become as common as penny poker? If you're Google, you reinvent the prize. The X PRIZE Foundation and Google teamed up to announce the Google Lunar X PRIZE, a $30 million prize awarded to the company that successfully lands a robotic rover on the moon.

But just getting there won't be quite enough. The rover needs to complete several tasks, including roaming the lunar surface for at least 500 meters and sending video, images, and data back to the Earth.

The entire world is invited to enter and the winner won't be announced until December 2012, so you've got a bit of time. Gentleman (and ladies)—start your engines.

Read more about the contest at the X PRIZE site and stay tuned for educational materials to be launched shortly.
