When Chris Null pointed out that there was a $175 bulletproof backpack from MJ Safety Solutions, I figured it was a one-kook phenomenon. (Actually, it was invented by two Boston dads who have been researching and designing the pack for a decade.) Now I'm not so sure. Last week I saw a second product, only this time it's not a full backpack, it's an expensive bulletproof insert that you can use to retrofit any backpack.
It's
called the Backpack Shield
and it's level
IIIA bullet resistant; that's one level higher than the backpack that
Chris reported. Level IIIA stops pretty intense bullets like .44 Magnum
or
9mm full metal jacket. The designers claim that the backpack insert can
be used with most ordinary backpack models. The
shield is made from layers of Kevlar so it's lightweight and thin
enough to
insert into your child's backpack without them noticing the extra
baggage. The
price for the insert is $250.
Of course not every bullet comes from behind, so you can (if you're faster than a speeding bullet) take it off your back and use it as a shield. It comes in designer colors and can even be personalized with your child's name (in case it gets lost amongst the others in the class?).
There's something terribly sad about the fact that we're seeing multiple products in this space. I know the manufacturers are well meaning, but I can't imagine explaining to Johnny why he needs to be bulletproofed before school. Talk about being scared to go to school! In some ways these bulletproof schoolwares are analogous to the threat of terrorism-if you succumb to it, you lose.
What do you think? Would you dress your kids in a bulletproof backpack?

Well, school shootings or at least firearms on campus seem like an all too often occurrence. I'd rather explain to Johnny before school why he needs to be bulletproofed that explaining why he has a bullet in his back after school. Being prepared for today's world is a necessity. We teach them how to cross the street safely, why not teach them how to protect themselves from flying bullets if the need arises.
"if you succumb to it, you lose"? that is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. I guess if you use vaccinations you're letting the germs win, huh? We "lose" to terrorism when we comply with their demands, not when we make an extra effort to save a life. good product. bad review.
I would buy one if I was in a gang or something...otherwise it's stupid. The likelyhood of getting shot at school is EXTREMELY low. Far more kids die from cancer and other illnesses. Many more die riding bike and playing in general. Also, do to safety concerns, MOST SCHOOLS WON'T LET YOU WEAR BACKPACKS AROUND SCHOOL. It's stupid.
This is just another example of ignoring the REAL problem. How to stop school shootings. This seems to me like everyone has given up on trying to solve this problem, so let's all don bulletproof vests. Why doesn't everyone walking around wear one? How about a helmet too while you drive? This is insanity, how is it that people think school shootings are a normal everyday thing? Maybe if we stop ignoring the real problem and take care of it, our children will stop trying to kill each other. Plus the other commenter was right, schools don't let kids walk around with backpacks, some don't allow backpacks at all or require them to be clear.

Little ones and college age. With all the nuts out there this is a great idea. Being prepared is smart.
