Love at First Sight: The Gateway One

I'm usually not swayed by a pretty face, but the Gateway All-in-One PC is one of the handsomest machines I've ever seen. It's been sitting in my dining room while I check it out, and it's become a major conversation piece for anyone who enters.

In the past, Gateway hasn't exactly been synonymous with groundbreaking design, but that's been changing. (See my review of the new Gateway XHD3000 monitor.) The new Gateway One is a streamlined, sleek PC housed in a glossy black console that's only about 3.5 inches thick. The console houses most of your computer: A 19-inch widescreen LCD, the hard drive, invisible but rich-sounding speakers, a DVD drive, and even a TV tuner (optional) are all built right into the display.

The only loose parts are the keyboard, mouse, and remote—they are wireless, beautifully engineered, and quite responsive. The major benefit, besides getting oohs and ahhs from your friends, is how neat things get when you're not squirreling a chassis and wires below your desk.

The first thing you'll notice is how quick a setup can be. The shoebox-sized power brick has one single cord that attaches to your PC. That's it. One wire and you're off and running.

The other thing you'll notice immediately is how quiet the fan is. Then rev up some music. The sound emanates from within, but you see no speakers. Vibrating transducers are hidden behind the glossy back, producing 8-channel sound that's probably one of the weakest links in the performance, but still more than respectable.

On the inside, the Gateway One features a Core2 Duo processor and an on-board graphics processor (Intel) with an upgrade to the ATI graphics card for even better performance. A 500GB hard drive is upgradeable to 2TB, so it's unlikely you'll run out of storage any time soon. There'se 3GB of RAM memory, as well as connectivity available through Ethernet, 802.11n wireless, and Bluetooth 2. This PC also comes equipped with seven USB ports and a fast slot-loading DVD. It runs Windows Vista Home with a trial version of Microsoft Office 2007. The price, fully loaded, will run you about $1,800.

Apple, Sony, and HP all make all-in-one machines, but Gateway is far from a me-too with this design.

Ben Patterson took an early look at the Gateway One. I've been running it for about three weeks and the love keeps growing.

Being a person that absolutely does not want a Mac, this is the first new computer that has caught my eye. With a special carry case, it looks as thought one would never need a laptop. Definitely on my christmas list!

If you want to play pong, or the latest incarnation of solitaire, get an imac. If you want to play the latest and greatest videogames, get a PC.

This may look like a very nice computer that will give the imac a run for its money. But lets talk relability, i think i would rather buy an imac. Oh come november 19, dell's XPS One will make this look like your Great Grandmother's computer.

I have 6 minis, 1 eMac, 1 MacBook Pro 17", 1 PowerBook 17" (ppc), and they all run windows just fine in either WMWare as emulated or native if I want to run it with boot camp. I get them all free or nearly free via online Apple 'refurbed' or via our company. I can't even imagine working on PC hardware particularly by Compaq, Dell, or any other manufacture that produces such garbage. I also fell in love with OSX, windows was great for a long time for me, but it is so bloated and dated in its feel. Its now an also ran, OSX is much much nicer, easier to use, and simpler. Good by windows, I'm glad to be a Mac/OSX FanBoy.

Very creative, Dell. Take the iMac design and stick your turd of an OS inside. You can put lipstick on a pig...

It's a waste of time and money by gateway to try and copy a mac!

A Mac is more than a pretty face. Importantly, a Mac doesn't come with a susceptibility to venereal disease. But at least Dell is trying, give credit where credit is due.

none can compare to the UPGRADABILITY of a clone PC you can change anything at anytime...any all-in-one is crappy if you cant change the parts out...new game needs better video? you have to buy a whole new machine...i have been building top of the line clones for 13years and all of my customers are happy--useing the best brands---ASUS BOARDS--NVIDIA VIDEO--WD AND MAXTOR DRIVES AND ALL HAVE THE BEST WARRANTIES FROM MANUFACTURER!...cheaper... better...and upgradable!!!!!

Have to agree that this is another copycat of another apple product, if PC makers are trying to better the imac, they should stop now as they will fail! Apple are way ahead and no matter what PC makers do, apple will always be one step in front. However, it's not all bad, this new PC all in one desktop would make a great doorstep! Mac rules!!!!!!

why would you want a machine that gets viruses? why would you want a machine that well... is an imitation of another machine. pc, try thinking for yourself for once.

This article really sounds like it was written from a Microsoft window lover that has not used Mac much. All this article seems to be concentrating on is how the two machines look similiar but yet, the Gateway was a newer design so it is better? In reality this Gateway is just another company that is trying to fool people into not thinking they copied this machine from Mac like everyone else does. Just buy a Mac and your ahead of all the rest...

Gateways are terrible! My girlfriend went against my advice about buying a mac and spent nearly $1000 on a gateway desktop(not including a monitor) and it crashes every 3 hours if she's lucky. She already bought a mac, and the gateway is just collecting dust since we have too much of a conscience to sell it to someone.(if we even could) plus, macs come with everything, no need to purchase all the extra gadgets and also, mac os doesn't have viruses.
