Is Your Phone Catching a Virus?

Just when you were getting the hang of protecting your computer from viruses, they must have sneezed and found your cell phone. One in every 10 phones is now a smart phone—capable of handling data and messaging. That means it's become easy and lucrative for hackers to attack your cell phone. And the dangers are just as real. From 2004 to 2006, the number of phone viruses doubled every month.

According to Symantec, viruses spread on cell phones in a variety of ways: Internet downloads, MMS (multimedia messaging service) attachments, and Bluetooth transfers to name a few. They'll often show up as game downloads, updates to your phone's system, ringtones, or alerts. McAfee Avert Labs has identified about 450 different variants of mobile threats, and that's not including phishing attacks and spam. According to McAfee research, 83 percent of worldwide carriers have had security incidents in 2007.

What do these viruses do? Reports are trickling in: A Seattle family was watched, monitored, and threatened because of spyware on their cell phone. A man's cell phone content was wiped clean after he downloaded a virus-infested ringtone. Crashes, unstable or slower-than-usual performance, quick battery consumption, incorrect or skyrocketing mobile phone bills, a dramatic increase in messaging charges—any of these could be a virus.

One of the original cell phone viruses (2004) was transmitted through a Bluetooth connection. Like your PC, some phone viruses are just annoying—a pop-up or a silly joke. Others are a bit more insidious, like the one that resets your phone monthly.

But the latest and most sophisticated crop are what's called "pranking for profit." This can involve things like redirecting your calls to a different carrier in a different country, racking up a hefty phone bill. Or sending an MMS message to everyone in your contact directory, leaving you with enormous extra charges. Or "vishing," when you'll get a voice call that asks for information, faking it by posing as a legitimate business. A downloaded application may send information about your phone account to hackers. Snoopware (which is spyware on steroids) might capture your keypad clicks.

How do you know you've been infected? Pay attention when your phone starts behaving badly. Are your contacts disappearing? Are your calendar entries gone? Does your phone bill have strange charges?

If so, suspect a virus before you suspect user error.

Next up? We'll look at the new tools from Symantec and McAfee designed to protect your phone from infection.

I found this sentence on another page and thought that I would post it for all of those people say "I have the cheap phones so this won't happen to me". "Remember that even cheap mobile phones are susceptible to viruses and it’s not just the more expensive and smarter mobile phones that are more likely to be infected". here is the link if you want to read it for yourself http://ezinearticles.com/?Tips-To-Avoid-Mobile-Phone-Viruses&id=602808

princess_devildog Is right everything is getting out of hand, everything starts to run by machines. Jobs are lost because they replaced the people with machines. Is so stupid but who is responsible for all this? You know who? Us of course. Let say u bayed a DVD player and plays only DVD's but then you think "man I wi----- could play mp3's" so people make this. In the future we will have a war with the machine like in the I-Robot sometime and It will come IT WILL!! And we could stop this hacking..but who wants to spend money on this?? Nobody Duh everybody say " I am not gonna do this let somebody do it for me" And I am talking about big companies like Microsoft and also money are lost cuz for an ex. Lets investigate why Michael Jordan how he survived with the cancer battle... instead to make the world better we investigate that and spend millions of dollors of investigations and crimes from 80's just to know what happend WTF is that??? Jeezus Christ.. the world is going crazy and out of control ....Bull -----

Thats why I don't download or pay for ring tones. Don't do text messages. Don't answer unknown calls from people. Don't have any internet access or use it. I have a camera phone but don't need anything else. I use the phone for the phone and nothing else. I have a ipod I use, a labtop for my internet. Email and hand written letters are my text messaging. Don't give my number out as a home number. Noone but my close friends and family has it. Never had a problem so far.

In the old days if you hijacked a person's horse you were hung. I say it is about time we started administering the same type of justice for those who hijack our cars, computers, ID, & cell phones.

If my phone gets a virus, the guy responsable will have a REALLY bad day...... (That includes Looking at the virus code, see who made it, find a name, download a computer virus into a secure folder and put it in an e-mail to him and make it look like it was from his local e-mail provider. He opens it and it says "download anti-virus unit" so he downloads it and It kills his computer and makes fun of him. A guy did something like that to our computer and a milion others by a simalar method. It gave us a REALLY bad day)

Good article and good information. I didn’t know this kind of electronic manipulation was out there and people are being watched and their privacy being invaded by one suing a cell phone. I have a cheep cell phone with only 1000 minutes on it at about $45.00 per month. I only have it for emergency purpose. I can imagine what is coming next, we shouldn’t be surprised. There is some interesting stuff coming up in the next few years. Our government will be passing a bill eliminating basis television cannels. Every one will have to have cable to receive TV reception.

now that i read this, i think i got infected. I get text messages from my friends that play a stupid joke, or some hair brain thing, much like a forward you would get on your email. well of course i open it and play it. well my phone bill and text messages skyrocketed, almost 100 bucks more a month! im going to call at&T and tell them this and dispute the bill! this is a nightmare for cel phone carriers, people will dispute the charges because of "virus", and cel phone companies could lose millions from it. wow.

What is up with Yahoo! and their malicious disrespect for the Chinese people? First turning over human rights activists to the communist government and now showing a photo of the SARS crisis and relating it to cell phone viruses. Talk about bad Che!

Well, We can always publish the identity of the virusmaker.... He might think it was an innocent prank, but there will always be a psycho out there willing to personally thank the maker. So let him!

Sounds like a scam to me also. They create the problem and charge you to fix it. The phone companies have been screwing us for years. If one company can charge you less than 10 cents per minute and make a profit then all of them can. I hate to admit it, but we have been getting ripped off for years and have grown accustomed to taking it in the rear all in the name of technological advancement. We have to pay an ourageous amount for gas, we have to accept a 200% increase in gas prices due to inflation, but we cannot expect our wages to increase 200%. It makes you sick to think that there are people profiting of our ignorance.

What ever happened to the old pay phone on every corner. Just drop in a quarter and let the phone company worry about any problems. "Ain't technology a wonderful thing?" Besides, I don't really need a cell phone. If my car breaks down, I just raise the hood and at least five people offer the use of their cell phone within five minutes. It doesn't cost me a penny either. Keep those cell phones in your car folks, I might need one soon.

See this is why i dont even use real names on my cell phone, rediculous really. It disgusts me that people would do something so childish, especialy when it comes to over charging the cell phone bill. I wonder if it occures to them that people work pretty hard for the money they have to waste on something so bogus. I mean come on, unless you making good money your cell phone company is screwing you anyways, why do they have to make it worse?

What a terrible idea telling users to suspect a virus before user error. As if end-users didn't do this enough already, here we have a tech columnist encouraging this behavior.
