What could be more innocuous than downloading a screensaver to dress up your PC? "Well, the reality is that screensavers are some of the riskiest pieces of software that you can download to your computer," says Shane Keats of McAfee, Inc., makers of a variety of PC protection software.
Keats says that while serious techies know they shouldn't download screensavers from the web, there are 15 million screensaver web searches each month. Those who end their search with a download are likely to find adware, spyware or worse tagging along for the ride.
McAfee found the most dangerous screensaver this summer was Miami Vice and that sites offering baseball or World Cup soccer downloads also were high on the risk list.
Sadly, some of the biggest targets for screensaver foul play are cartoon characters. McAfee looked at 318 kids' TV programs to see how risky it was for kids to download their corresponding screensavers. We're talking Rugrats, Powerpuff Girls, SpongeBob, and Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers here.
After doing a Google search with the character name and the word "screensaver" (precisely the way most families would look for a screensaver, says Keats), McAfee determined that at least 50 percent of the sites listed on the first page of all of these search results were risky sites to visit. Topping the list as worst offender? Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, where 80 percent of the search returns included links to risky sites. The complete results are documented on the SiteAdvisor blog.
This doesn't mean the Power Rangers have done anything wrong. It just means that unscrupulous web sites have chosen to enact bad practices using the characters' names.
Here's an in-depth example to show you how it works.
A search for "Power Rangers screensaver" leads to all sorts of different web sites, including Starpulse.com (a celebrity web site that uses Screensavers.com as a part of its service). Every time a Starpulse user installs a program from Screensavers.com, Starpulse earns an "affiliate" commission. At the same time, Screensavers.com bundles an adware program called Starwave and a tracking program called Relevant Knowledge, all unbeknownst to you. Your data is now being compromised, and you're being barraged with pop-up ads, too.
To play it safe? Don't download screensavers. If you feel you have to, don't download them from anywhere but the biggest, most reputable sources. For the kids, if Nickelodeon or Disney or another well-regarded brand doesn't make the screensaver available, then stay away.
McAfee's research stems from its work with SiteAdvisor, a program that uses simple color coding to tell you whether a site is safe or risky. To create the rating, the company has robots that search the entire web, logging on to sites, filling out registrations, downloading software, and more. They then monitor what happens to the robots as they use the site. Do they get junk mail? Viruses? Pop-ups? Is it a perfect science? Probably not, but by offering this tool as a free download (or as part of McAfee Suites) and by making data like the screensavers report available, they're certainly helping make the web a cleaner place.

what the article fails to mention is this only affects Windows computers or users dumb enough to browse the net with Internet Explorer. Folks should do themselves a favor, buy a Mac or run Ubuntu linux & watch these concerns fade away.
i use a seperate spyware remover and anti virus software. i was curious if they were trusworthy. I havent had any problems with: Spybot "search and destroy" and AVG Anti Virus Guardian both are the free versions
If anybody honestly thinks this is new, they are TOTALY out of the loop. Oh, and bill clintons internet privacy act states that adware is ILLEGAL and punishable by law. By the way, McAfee isn't all that powerfull of a virus remover. The lesser-well-known AVG is clearly better, McAfee passes a bunch of stuff up in the system32 files, thus leaving your computer still in a rendered state, i honestly also suggest AD-Aware, which gets rid of spyware and such. a VIRUS REMOVER does NOT remove spyware, and vise versa, you guys need to learn that asap. but the suggestions i gave are both free, and such. also, i suggest to NEVER click a add on a website, god knows whats on the other end of that link... some other helpful tidbits: when you get a pop-up asking if you want to remove adware, never click it, its a oxy moron in stupidity it self. also NORTON ANTIVIRUS IS THE WORST LEGIT VIRUS REMOVER TO DATE!!! i can not stress this enough! norton does not even remove the stuff it finds, if it even finds anything. As suggested above, use AVG virus removal, just google AVG. not only does it work, its free. i hate norton. also, im not afeliated with avg at all, heh. none the less, just e-mail me at earth_lord2000@yahoo.com for more information regarding computers, internet, hijacking, and virus/trojans/spyware. one last thing! if your computer EVER says anything about WinFixer, SYSTEM RESTORE ASAP! THAT IS THE WORST VIRUS OTHER THAN THE I luv you VIRUS! it will kill your computer like a small puppy!
I think it is horrible that people are doing this kind of stuff. Do they have anything better to do then mess up your computer. How do they do it? I want them to be arrested for what they are doing. I would feel a burn inside of me every time I did it if I was one of them. I would feel like I was giving someone a sickness or something. I hate what these people are doing. And the worst part is, that they could randomly put a childrens show on a popup add and a little child could like or love that show and download it. Virusers and hackers. Stop!!!!
Goto rr.com doesnt matter which region create an email account, and download EZ virus protection its a great program
i work in a repair shop, people have no clue what they are downloading, they expect that mcafee that came with their AOL to catch everything.NOT.i have infected computers all the time with mcafee and norton.both eat up too many resources(memory)for the protection they deliver.virus and spyware will only get worse.rootkits are almost undetectable by virus programs.PLEASE before downloading anything do a search for on yahoo, google, etc and see what has been said about any product in question.the biggest downloaders are children.in my business you would not believe how many parents don't have a clue what their kids are doing online.a vast number of repairs i do the children usually have their windows passworded and the parents don't know the passwaord, some of these kids are 10.also you should be aware of any p2p software installed on pc i.e. kazaa limewire ares bearshare etc or any music sharing program that you are downloading from and individual instead of legitimate company i.e. yahoo music rhapsody napster.it's very easy to name a file so it looks like an mp3.plus there are people who think it's funny to name it one thing and then it turns out to be something else like porn or possibly even child porn, bestiality, etc.all i have said is not to scare or judge morals this is just useful info to have.1 more thing quit using IE internet explorer..use firefox or netscape if possible.AOL users you are using IE in a AOL packaging.same with netzero walmart connect almost all companies like AOL use IE for a base to their browser.if you are not sure about your browser contact your internet compant and ask about using an alternate browser.you pay a monthly fee make these companies work for it.on an unrelated note your kids are giving out way too much info on places like MYSPACE.in the wrong hands that much info could be a problem.PARENTS wake up and take control have a working knowledge of what your children are doing.here's an expiriment go to yahoo chat make a screen name go into chat rooms but don't speak just hang out and watch..i have seen more 45 year old men trying to talk to underage girls and boys it would make you throw your pc in the garbage.i hope this info helps someone.this has been my 2 cents.
Sorry earthlord, but the "Internet Privacy Act" which you cite does not exist. It would be nice if it actually did, but it does not. Besides that, if you get adware, spyware, etc. due to browsing some shady website, there's not really any legal action you can take. If it's not your website, then you're not the one responsible for what that site does. If you really want to get rid of the virus problem, use either Mac OS or some variety of Linux (I'd recommend Ubuntu). Mac OS is friendlier, but Linux is FREE! That beats the daylights out of paying over $100 for a Windoze license.
Other reputable virus protection and spyware services. Some free. AVAST! version 4.7 go to www.avast.com PREVX1 go to www.prevx.com AD-AWARE SE go to www.lavasoft.com You can also call Microsoft's security division at 866-727-2338. Work through them and they'll walk you through removing anything that might be affecting your system. I was slammed by Malware and a few viruses, and they helped me untangle the mess. You'll probably reach someone speaking in a heavy Indian accent, but I'll take help from a martian if they can stop these jerks from infecting my computer.
A few comments: yes parents should be more aware of what their kids do, especially in places like Yahoo chat rooms which come with pedophiles, general younger perverts (the teen variety), hacker wannabes (not really hackers, but might be enough to screw up a comp if a child gives away their IP, etc)as well as bots that suggest loads of porn and similar sites where viruses, adware and spyware abound; AVG isn't a bad anti-virus, AVAST is also pretty good, in my experience, and both have free versions with automatic updates; I use a couple of anti-ad/spyware programs and find they will sometimes find stuff missed by the other (A-squared, AdAware) and every so often run them in safe mode (when doing that it is a good idea to remove your restore option and recreate a checkpoint after cleaning your comp - this prevents stuff from hiding in your restore files and coming back when you activate one); generally not being a lamb, like so many of those who have commented here appear to be, and don't blindly follow popups, etc., common sense will often tell you something is not right, or too good to be true "click here for your free iPod is rather unlikely to be that simple...get the picture ? *click* (worth 1000 words)!!!
Good Article. For those who are already infected just download these FREE (for personal use) products. Antivirus: Grisoft's AVG Firewall: Zonealarm's Firewall Spyware & Adware Scanners: Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Just remember Spyware & Adware scanners have different ways of scanning for these files (recent tests shows 60% - 90% spyware & adware detection) so it's always good to have more than one and the two i listed are two of the best.
I have been telling my customers for years NOT to download screen savers. Also games that require the Wild Tangent control panel to play will infect your computer. Do NOT let yout kids go to http://www.wildtangent.com/index.html?pageID=home to play games.
Also keep in mind that it dont matter how much protection you have, your never safe, even plug'ins you can get even can contain adware or malware, and when it comes to AOL, it is a virus and adware in itsself, AOL just seems to hand out false sense of safety.
A good site for screensavers is Webshots. I've never gotten any Spy or Adware from it, or that I know of. I have Spyware Doctor and Ad-Aware SE Personal, which every night scan my computer for Spyware and Adware and kill them off.
Wonderful article and very informative. There are always suspicions, but it definately helps when you clearly identify a particle program that could compromise your computer as apposed to "...be careful what you download on the internet." Well written and researched. Thanks.
Its worse than everyone thinks, the virus programs and spy/addware security sites want you to think your safe using there product! Ive been into internet piracy for years and most malware is ONLY reckonized by whats called a fingerprint its small snipit of a program reckonized by a programmer to bea malicious code, but heres MILLIONs of doctored fingerprints (its easy 13 year old kids are doing it) and comps will run wiout knowing, EVEN if you monitor all your netowrk activity, and lock you system registry, theres still tunneling software, that will run insode th epackets of programs you trust, and only run when you are active, only way to keep your self is to stay on top of security, use a top brand up to date (updateing daily) virus suites (not just scanners, you need active resident sheilds) and SEVERAL spyware addware programs, lavasoft and spybot S@D are good but the yahoo adware scan though simple and light plugin gets stuff they miss I use 4 different spy/addware/trojan detection devices plus a firewall, plus a port scanner, plus Avast Pro 4.7 (the free version is great too) and i still get stuff, stay on top of you computer or it will die, and back up back up back up files
what about firefox? is that safe?
btw the mac users and firefox users who think there virus proof are smoking wacky stuff, the reason there not exploited is WHY RIGHT CODES FOR OS OR EXPLORER THAT NO ONE USES, or doesnt plain work!
as far as kids my buddy joe has the best policy, CHILDREN ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DOWNLOAD anytime anywhere, if they want a program he does it, making sure its clean, installed right, runs right, and that his registry is repaired, even his 17 year old son was banned from his computer for 3 months for trying to sneak a free harmless online rpg hidden away in a folder, If you dont know what ANY user on your comp is doing, your at risk!!!! Ive destroyed many of a Local internet lamers by offering free computer help (@#$%s, didnt even watch what I was doing) no permenant damage just really hard to remove certain LSP prgrams specially when windows XP cant even see them !?!? what you guys dont know about that , shhhhhh its a secret!
Yeah I feel sorry for pc users, and they say mac's are not good. thats the second reason I changed to a mac bc windows gets all those viruses, spyware and adware, and then you spend 4 hrs looking for and deleting them. Yes macs does not have as much software as pc's do but i woudl rather have a safe and sound computer with no hassles. My dad have to buy a new pc which lasted not even 2 years bc there was so much viruses, spyware and adware and the hard drive bus was overloading and the hard drive crashed. It had anti everything and updated the .dat files all the time, while my mac has not had a operating system crash ever in 4 years, the software has crashed but that bc of some bug in its program not the operating system. microsofts not as bad as it used to be tho but still sometimes if software crashed the operating systm crashed too.

More tests should be done for these problems other than just screensavers. Spyware, adware, and who knows what else is included in so many things targetted for kids, like emoticon characters for MSN messenger or other messengers. I have seen many family computers infected with spyware and popups (ones that most blockers can't even control) and it is because their children download things like this. And fake spyware removal are the worst things I have had to deal with. Those people who see that their computer is having problems and then a site tells them "hey, you have a virus, download this and it will get rid of it" and so they do what they think is right and only make their computer worse! I am glad that someone has finally pointed this out in the media though, maybe something will get done about it, or at least parents will know that this is a source of viruses and warn their children against downloading. Please do more research and warn people against so many of the other dangerous things to download on the Internet. It's hard enough to keep from getting spyware when you know what you are doing, but if you don't know any better, then it is impossible.
