Readers Share Cell Phone Camera Secrets

I asked and you told about the ways you've used your cell phone's camera to capture life's more practical moments. The responses were so varied and interesting that I thought I'd share. I've done some categorizing, concatenating, and taking a guess at gender in my use of pronouns.

The Shoppers

The cell phone camera works well for the shopping paparazzi. Fuelup_kr uses the cell to take pictures of products and prices, too; most recently a vacuum. Oceans972 uses the phone to share shopping finds with her sister, but also uses it as a memory jogger: "....like snapping a pic of an empty Rx bottle to remind me to pick up a new one."

The Memory Joggers

Memory joggers were on more minds than one. A number of readers suggested the parking lot shot where a few pictures can serve as reference locators when your car has misplaced itself. One really important memory jogger came from Brandoncariveau who said that he takes a photo of his kids every day before dropping them off at school and when they visit public places. "That way, should they get lost, I know exactly what they're wearing," he says.

When Things Fall Apart

Why is it so much easier to pull things apart than put them back together? A number of folks wrote about using their cell phones to capture the state of something before it was taken apart. One reader wrote, "when doing your own auto repairs, a snapshot BEFORE you take things apart, and at key points along the way helps you get things back together they way they should be."

Fuelup_kr suggested taking a picture of a room layout before rearranging the room for a meeting to be sure things went back the way they were. Iago2k1 snaps a photo of his equipment like computers, air conditioners, etc. just in case. Carpediemdjg holds a ruler next to an object and takes its picture with his cell phone before heading off to the store to buy something. He'll photograph the wiring of electronic toys before taking them apart. Photographing home repairs, even a septic tank repair, helped another reader document work that had been done already.

Accidents and Arguments

Serenahickey suggests photographing an apartment before moving out to help settle potential security-deposit issues. Jcollica922, another native New Yawker, photographs her parked car so that she has proof of being parked legally. Many wrote in about the fender benders or hit-and-run encounters where the cell phone provided evidence. A car renter wrote to say that her cell phone has pictures of the car before and after the rental. Proof that no damage has been done.

On the Job

Seems like cell phone photography is infiltrating work life too. An installer said he often gets calls from the crew explaining a problem they're having. He has them snap a photo and send it over. Schlauefrau's office admin took pictures of some office furniture that was being replaced. The furniture found a new home and no one had to leave their cubicle for the viewing. Oreohead7 wrote that he runs meetings from a white board and doesn't always have pen in hand. When he's about to erase the board he snaps a cell phone photo. After the meeting he downloads the pictures and can email them to attendees. A road department worker takes photos of rockslides or other storm-related maintenance issues and emails them into the office for further analysis. He wrote that it saved people from having to "come out into the field and see for themselves." And Dr_beting uses the camera to take photographs of patients' brain CT scans, noting that it cuts down the amount of stuff that needs to get lugged around.

Out-of-Box

Some of you had suggestions I never would have dreamed of: Hamagucd suggests taking pictures of business cards to record contact information. An Army recruiter wrote to say he captures images of questionable tattoos that he finds on potential recruit bodies to share with operations and figure out how to proceed. Chanrajesq wrote about using the camera to photograph people's palms. "If you want to keep a perfect identity-token of someone, take a close-up picture of his palm. With a 2-megapixal camera a very clear record can be obtained almost instantly—one which is far superior to a thumbprint." Gary.berthelsen discovered that you can take your cell phone into a concert arena, even when the security guards force you to leave your expensive camera behind. Funyakkers takes pictures of his X-rays at the doctor's office. And one reader wrote that taking a picture is faster than typing, so it's good to take your cell phone into the video store and take pictures of the films you want to see next time.

True Confessions

Some ideas belong in the "more than I need to know" category. One reader takes pictures of answers received before a test. She can then take out her cell phone for a quick in-class review. And some (surprise, surprise) wrote in to say they do things with their cell phone camera that I'd rather not repeat here.

The only negative expressed was how hard it can be to get the image off of the phone and into the hands of another. Isn't there any other way besides email?" asks, Imbluedracoai.

I enjoy painting...if I see some artwork somewhere that I think I can replicate, or if I just like a color combo in a work...I take a shot of it. Also, fabric patterns on whatever...for inspiration.

i always find it funny what people use their stuff for and i am no different. I usually text as its tons faster but a picture can be so freaking handy...from the devilish dirty naughty to the innocent shopping freak and anything inbetween. for me i use a windows mobile phone, the programs are awesome and really let you free of proprietary stuff on other phones, and ive been using mobile for just over 3yrs. at 2 megapixels, the camera is definately fine and with a 4gb micro sd, it fits my music videos, movies, and of course pictures... for me capturing a moment and explora or the museum of my 2 kids is awesome and as well as kewl classic cars my friends dont believe i seen driving, to kitchen needs when shopping, to plain old friendly foddler at the pub or bar of friends and fun.... like one person said a picture is like a thousand words, and when i can snap quality high pics decent very decent 3 times faster and 3times as many as a 512mb equiped 400 camera, and i come away with more pics at a b-day party its greatly justified... anyhow have fun keep snap shotting some of the best pics are pcam (phone cam) pics

As a private practice speech therapist, I work w/ lots of nannies who take children w/ mild to severe communication disabilities out in the community. I tell them all, when you get to the mall, museum, amusement park, whatever, take a picture of your charge w/ your camera phone. That way you have something to show if the unthinkable happens, and there will be no confusion as to what the child looks like and is wearing.

I'm a teacher and I have used my cell phone to document naughty children. I've caught students in temper tantrums. I've also pulled it out and pretended to be recording asking the student to tell their mother why they are refusing to get into line. Works every time. I've also recorded lessons to reflect on my teaching. In the rare instance that I have to leave the room to make a copy, I can use it as a surveilance camera.

I secretly take a photo of the person that I find attractive (some of them are my friends, acquaintances or a stranger on the bus, etc.) and when I get home I view the pictures on the phone's screen or transfer it to my laptap and view it while I fantasize about the person with my hand on my #&*$#@ and masturbate. And yes, I take pictures of my flaccid or erect org#n and post it in adult picture- sharing/rating sites. My camera-phone really helps me in some horny ways...I'm TECHNO-HORNY!

I have a 3.0 pix cam I should be using some of these ideas they are all great. I love the memory thing. I have a recorder and I never think to use it for grocery or homework even though I listen to the music on it all the time. I told my daughters about this post and they said ya we do some of those. My daughters are 12, and 13 they take pictures of the board where the teacher writes the assignment. The teachers don't care how they remember as long as they do the work. My 12 year old says she takes pictures of students that are new as soon as she meets them because she knows that she or one of her friends will have to write an article in journalism and they like to add what the student wore on his or her first day at the new school and ask them questions about their choice. cell phones have come along way.

For: Imbluedracoai; if you're wondering how to share a picture, try sending a picture text message to your friend's cellphone. But as far as getting it onto the computer and sharing it, i think your out of luck, your stuck to e-mail and if your desperate a flashdrive

My wife bought us two iPhones. Man, I miss Verizon, and the first chance I have, I'm switching back. I do like the fact, that whatever pictures I take throughout the day are automatically downloaded to my computer when I charge the phone. iPhone has THE BEST camera set-up from that perspective. The problem is that -- and I am not kidding -- I CANNOT send or receive a picture message w/the dang thing! I used to shoot pic messages back and forth to all of my family and friends when I was with Verizon. Now --nothing. I take a pic and can't send it to anyone's phone. I hope they figure out a way to offer both sometime soon.

I take pictures of the isbn numbers on books I like at bookstores so I can find them online for a lower price. Also, my Choclate has a slot for a memory card. If you have a new phone without a memory slot it's probably just cheap!...LOL!

I use my cellcam to record the part number and price of hardware like nuts and bolts at Home Depot. They always have little bags to put your stuff in, but there is never a pencil to write on the bags. I also use it to take pictures of parts I need to buy for my car so when I get to the auto parts store so I get the right part. Pep Boys always has some retard behind the parts counter that can't read the screen he's looking at. I also use it to take spy photos in meetings at work so I can show my wife some of the dorks I work with.

Use your cell phone to take pictures of your elderly relatives whenever you visit. My mom disliked having her picture taken because she always thought she didn't look very good. My niece got a great one of her and because the resolution is low, my mom's skin looks lovely! My mom passed away two months ago and I really appreciate thiose recent pictures. When she was in the hospital she asked me to photograph a skin problem so we would be able to see how it changed over time.

HIPAA and other comments: For the dental lab technician who take photos and e-mails them to his/her dentist, actually what you are doing can be considered a HIPAA violation. E-mail is notorious for being unsafe for sensitive data prohibition. Although inconvenient, unless the data is encrypted or the patient names/identifiers removed, then sending patient information over e-mail can get you into trouble if the data is ever lost/stolen. I have done medical research now for many years, and e-mail is a big no-no.

Recently, I was helping an elderly friend clean out his pantry and refrigerator of old/expired foods. There was one product, a chili starter kit, that he wanted to get another of, so I took a picture of the product. When we went to the store, we couldnt find the product, so I showed the pic to a store employee who was able to help us find the product.

"I then call the dentist so we can discuss the patient while he or she looks at the picture I sent. A picture without any names I should stress." As I said in my original post, I send the pictures without any names and then call the dentist to discuss. The pictures are identified by the teeth numbers. For example "Dr. XYZ- on the patient where we are replacing #' 7,8,9 and 10" etc. No names are said. I continue this because the public is falsely alarmed over HIPPA and privacy issues. I agree that in the 80's there was a freedom of distribution but since the early 90's to present, there is much more control and no need for alarm or concern. AS LONG AS NO NAMES, OR OTHER IDENTIFYING INFORMATION, ARE SENT THERE IS NO VIOLATION OF PRIVACY! You can not look at a set of teeth and tell they are your Aunt Suzies and be able to separate them from the millions of teeth molds out there and the same for a CT Brain scan. Go to myspace.com/technocowboy and you will see a picture of me holding a set of teeth and some teeth on my desk. Can you tell me who's teeth they are? If you can I will give you all 9 of my cars!!

Great ideas. When I was shopping for a dress for a wedding I would try on in the dressing room. I had snapshots of different dresses on me so I could review compare and decide. Also I could e-mail the pic and get opinions from friends.

I found a reference in a book store and I did not want to buy the book just for the name of the author and the name of the article. So I took a picture of the reference and looked it up later online.
