I love it when big companies vie for first place. You know who the winner is, don't you? That would be us.
The latest buzzword in mobile phone-speak is unlimited calling. The first salvo came from Verizon Wireless earlier in the week. It introduced an unlimited calling plan for $99.99 a month. On the plan, you get unlimited minutes, no domestic roaming or long distance charges, and mobile Web 2.0. (This doesn't include surcharges, taxes, and fees or activation fees.)
Within hours, AT&T Mobility offered its version of the $99 unlimited plan. For the moment, Sprint's unlimited plan remains at $119.99 a month, but it includes unlimited web use, email, and messaging. The company has not announced a price, cut but the week's still young. Engadget is already hot on the rumor trail about a $60 a month unlimited calling option from Sprint.
And T-Mobile USA also announced its price-cutting week, too. For $99, it offers unlimited nationwide calling, but ups the ante by adding unlimited messaging, including text messages (SMS), picture messages (MMS), and instant messages (IM).
Is $99 for unlimited calling right for you? Possibly not. The carriers can substantially increase their revenue by upselling you to a more expensive plan than you need in the name of "unlimited." You know the sales speak: "For just a few dollars more a month than you're already spending you can have unlimited use."
BusinessWeek quoted a communications and media consultancy practice, that reported only 5 percent to 15 percent of the combined customer base of the three of the four largest U.S. cell-phone service providers would probably save by converting to the all-you-can-talk calling plans.
If you're in the 5 percent to 15 percent, then hooray for you! If you're not, you might be spending more than you need to spend. Before you sign on the dotted line, do an inventory of a few months of bills. My hunch is that most of the people who will benefit from the new $99 unlimited game are those who are either always over their minute limits or already pay $99 for a fixed number of minutes. In other words, heavy volume callers.
If you're paying $39 a month and stay within your minutes, there's not a lot of reason for the "unlimited" word to lure you.

Sprint/Nextel's unlimited plan is 99.99, now too. On the Nextel side it not only includes unlimited minutes, long distance, voice mail, but also text messaging, mobile web, mobile TV and unlimited nationwide direct connect. If all of these items were purchased separately, your bill could easily end up over $150 before taxes. For me, the unlimited plan keeps money in my pocket.
i am a sprint customer and i know sprint had an unlimited plan long before anyone. i had the 119.99 plan a year ago. and a couple months ago i switched to sprints new 99.99 unlimited plan which has everything. while at&t and verizon offer unlimited talk for 99.99. sprint offers unlimited talk, text, pic, vid, web, gps, tv, radio and etc. its truly unlimited, the only extra thing i pay for is the insurance. this plan has saved me hundreds, i talk alot, off of my bill. i travel and run my own business as well as i am an political activists.
After working as a CSR for a couple of different companies over the last 4 years I have to say that A. the first unlimited plan I've seen was in 04 by nextel and it was mainly just unlimited talk and direct connect, now I know that it had been out for a while before I first saw it, I just odn't know how long. B. cell usuers have a tendency to slowly increase the minutes they use over time. Consistantly over years of use most people find that they need increasingly larger plans to keep up with what they are using. I have consistantly seen this trend over the last 4 years, especially when your talking about several people on a shared plan. Unlimited usage is the way the industry needs to move, they have to get away from the problems that occure with plans that are not unlimited. From everything I've seen it is one of the biggest causes of churn simply due to the grass is greener bug. (most of the time the customer comes back regretting it.)
I had been a customer with cingular now At&t for a almost 2 years. I had about 4 months til my contract expired when I found out about Boost unlimited. It's the greatest thing that ever happened as far as I'm concerned!!!I have unlimited talking, texting, and web for $45 a month. I think its worth the early term fee. In the long run I'm saving a bundle. At&t offered me a so called unlimited plan for $99 and my 1st bill was $321 with the new plan (oops they didn't mention it didn't cover internet or texting)What a rip off!! I'm totally satisfied my with new boost mobile service. Soooo what's everyone waiting for join the boost vips for vip treatment and service. No contracts, no activation fee, and the 1st month is on them. What are you waiting for? By the way I kept my old phone number no problem.
I had verizon for 6 yrs and the service was great but i hated calling everyday to find out how many peak min off peak min nite and weekend min, text messages etc.i had used. i hated not answering my phone so as not to go over my min or waiting til 9 pm. i joined cricket 2 yrs ago. unlimited talk for 45. it was the best thing i ever did until a year ago when i signed up for their new plan. 50 gets me unlimited talk, text, pix, web, call forwarding, and 411.why anyone would pay twice that for less is a mystery
If only metropcs had more service areas....sigh
well to sprint and all the other major phone company my plan with MetroPCS is great I pay $60.00 per month with internet and long distance and text. My only problem I have dropped calls but it's ok my friends know if my call drops I will be calling them back. So for me MetroPCS has it' problems but I can call anybody anywhere anytime. Oh yea I like to hear my friends say "Man get off my phone you are using my minutes I say HAHAHAHAHA BYE"
I ALSO HAVE BOOST MOBILE UNLIMITED...IT TRULY IS UNLIMITED...YOU HAVE UNLIMITED MINUTES, TEXT MESSAGING, PICTURE MESSAGING, AND WEB FOR NO MORE THAN 65 A MONTH...I ABSOLUTELY LUV THIS SERVICE. THERE IS NO CONTRACT TO WORRY ABOUT AND AGAIN ITS REALLY UNLIMITED. LIKE THE PERSON SAID A COUPLE OF COMMENTS AGO...IT IS WORTH THE EARLY TERMINATION FEE..AT LEAST IT WAS FOR ME...IF YOU GET A CHANCE LOOK INTO IT!!
Some people posting on this site should check their spelling before posting, don't "ya" think? and BTW I spend about $21.00 every 6 weeks for my service with NO Contract since I am not stupid enough to spend 1/3 to 1/2 of my life on a Cell Phone.
I do just fine w/out any of the 'big' companies. Been with Suncom for about 5 or 6 years (the UNplan) and get unlimited calling for under $50 bucks a mo.
WELL THATS Y THIS PLAN IS NOT 4 U. ITS 4 PPL WHO TALK ALOT N PPL WHO USE THEIR CELLPHONE AS THEIR PRIMARY PHONE. I HAVE SPRINT AND I THINK ITS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO MY BILL. I WAS PAYIN darn NEAR $100 WITH MY FAIR N FLEXIBLE PLAN SO I DECIDED TO MAKE IT EASIER ON ME.
the sprint plan is only $99.99 with taxes, fees and insurance my bill only comes to $119 and some change, that's on my wifes phone. I, on the other had have stayed with my free in coming plan at #39.99. The sprint plan is truely unlimited, except in Alaska and Hawaii where they told me they have no service.
testing
I have verizon because they had a great family pack but MetroPCS has a summer family pack, which includes the usual "unlimited" minutes for $125.00 for 5 phones, it's a great deal so I will leave Verizon where I pay $270 for close to the same package, but only 2100 minutes for 5 people. Yeah Capitalism......Happiness to all....Pandora073104@yahoo.com
This Story is wrong.... Ntelos has had unlimited calling for years now and it is only $59.95 a month...It's great service for the price...Someone needs to do there research...
pick the one that's best suited for your life style, not your friends.
The Verizon $99.99 plan gives you ACCESS to Mobile Web 2.0 but then charges you for use. Unlimited plan is actually $139.99.
You have your information wrong about Sprint. The Simply Everything 99.99 plan, repeat 99.99 includes UNLIMITED voice, text, gps, email, music,tv etc....I don't know how you came up with 119.99. Go on line and look for yourself. I know I just did. Please make the corrections in this artical. Shame on you!!!!
Verizon has a 30 day plan, do it all and if you don't like it you don't pay anything, nothing. Then there's the big BUT, if you like it you pat for everything that you did and for the phones. So be careful because on day 30 "You Play You Pay" and it's a 2 year contract. Now if you buy your plan through WalMart, some of there plans are for only 1 year. Just keep your contract because ATT likes to come back later and say "No it was for 2 years". You need the contract in writeing to prove the 1 year or your stuck.
