Holiday "Gotcha" Moment

'Tis the season when a bargain can quickly turn out to be more than you bargained for! This past weekend, in the name of research, I couldn't resist ducking into a Best Buy. I learned a lot. The crowds were thick, and thickest in the video gaming and large-screen TV aisles.

But the gotcha moment came in the printer section of the store. A helpful young clerk was working with a middle-aged woman who wanted a new printer for her laptop. He was asking her all the right questions:

Was it running Windows? (Yes.)

Did it have a USB port? (Maybe.)

How old a PC was it? (Only a few years.)

The clerk concluded that it was pretty likely the PC had a USB port and suggested the current special, a Canon printer for $20. Wow! A brand-name printer for $20. My idea of a sale. The customer asked a few more questions about things like ink refill prices, and after a few moments of back and forth, she decided to buy it.

That was the moment of gotcha. The clerk explained that it didn't come with a USB cable and she would have to buy one.

"How much is that?" she asked.

"Thirty-five dollars," he answered, straight-faced.

"But that's more than the printer!" she said, looking mighty puzzled.

He shrugged. She ultimately bought both the printer and the terrifically overpriced USB cable.

At home, my search for a USB cable turned up cables for as low as $2 and often in the $5 range. At Buy.com, there were dozens of choices under $10.

The "cable" or "special adapter" or "batteries" are often at the center of gotchas like this. If the price is too good to be true, there's often something more that you'll need to make your new purchase workable.

Have you had your seasonal gotcha moment yet?

I went to Best Buy the day after Thanksgiving JUST FOR THAT PRINTER! I realized it wasn't in the sales ad so there was really no reason to rush to the store and stand in line like most people (some by midnight...others Thanksgiving morning). I found out about the printer from one of the leaked "black friday" ads. When I found them they were next to 2 advertised printers at much higher prices AND the $20 printers didn't even have the price showing. It was on a piece of paper sitting on top of the tall stack. I reached for the papers, and nosey shoppers started noticing the price and gladly helped research the model number to make sure that it was in fact the same printer for the $19.99 price. Then I grabbed one and told my friend to do the same....after that, they started going like hot cakes. And since it's pictbridge enabled, anybody who has a digital camera can use the printer even without a computer and more than likely already has the cord to do so. Even better it prints from camera phones too! It was a great steal/deal listed as a $79.99 printer/scanner/copier with a $60 instant rebate!

I had one of those moments, but didn't fall for it. I was at circuit city going for their $100 Polk Audio sub that usually sells for $200. As I was picking it up, the store clerk asked if I wanted a sub cable for it. I ask how much was it and he told me $40. I said no thanks saying knowing that I could buy that same cable online for probably 10-15 dollars.

Rather than opt for mail order, your local Big Lots often carries USB (and Cat 5) cables for less than $5.
