Up the River Without a Laptop but Lots of Gear

Kayaks have two hatches that run across the bow and stern for stowing gear, and for the next five days of my life, my worldly goods will be in those hatches. After you pack the clothes and the food (mostly GORP, salami, cheese, and space-age concoctions), plus stove, tents, sleeping pads, and sleeping bags, you're not left with a lot of room for your gadgets. So my husband and I thought long and hard about what we needed and here's how it shook out.

  1. Two digital cameras. The Panasonic TZ-1, a 10X zoom, small form factor, point and shoot. We upgraded the memory to 2GB and brought two extra batteries. This, we think will last for the five days (about 700 photos) without having to transfer photos. (In the past we brought an iPod with the iPod Camera Connector, a cable transfer, to offload images onto the iPod.)
  2. Canon PowerShot Pro 1. That's his camera. An 8-megapixel camera that's about as close as you can get to an SLR without getting there. He loves to fiddle with the exposures and controls, and it's double the size of mine. He, too, has 2GB of memory and a spare 1GB card. He, too, has two extra batteries. And he, too, can take 750 photos. (Heaven help our friends and relatives.)
  3. A BlackBerry phone with one extra phone battery. This won't last long and I'm not sure how good the service will be, but it's there.
  4. An ICOM marine VHF radio. This will let us get weather forecasts, talk to the four others who'll be on the trip with us, and, in theory (they're only good for line of sight communications), radio for help. The batteries are supposed to be good for eight hours and we brought a second set. Hopefully we won't need it very much.
  5. LED flashlights and headlamps. These things are the greatest if you ask me. Reading in a tent by LED light is far superior to the old flashlight.
  6. An MSR Dragonfly cookstove. OK, we're getting off the electronics subject, but believe me, this is the most important piece of gear for a coffee-aholic.
  7. A PUR water pump/purifier. We can't carry five days of water, but we sure do want to drink and cook the whole time.
  8. An iPod. Now don't tell my husband, but I snuck the iPod into the gear back with some tiny flat speakers from Pioneer.
  9. Lots of waterproof bags. Any camping store sells these and you can't take too many.

What we're missing is what one of our colleagues is bringing along. Mo, a seasoned paddler, is bringing lots of stuff and he makes us look like lightweights. His gear list is up next.
