Did you ever see those kids' coloring books where all you do is add water to the page and the picture turns into a fully-colored one? Well, imagine if you had a printer that could color a blank page into a photo. No inks, no ribbons.
No more imagining, either. At Demo 07, an industry showcase for new products, ZINK Imaging demonstrated an inkless printer. Based on the scuttlebutt I've heard from various friends attending the show, the ZINK (for "Zero Ink") demonstration was off the charts on the WOW factor.
The magic behind the printer (which is about the size of a PDA device and fits in your pocket) is in the paper. The paper has embedded dye crystals (as pictured) that turn various colors when heat from the printer is applied. The photo comes out completely dry in just a few moments. The company expects to have a camera/printer combo unit, too.
According to the company, the prints are more durable and even water resistant since ZINK paper is made from a different structure. And it expects prints to be low cost as well since there's no cost for inks or ribbons.
Watch the demo live from DEMO. Stay tuned and think ZINK.

This sounds really cool! I'm all about gadgets, so I'll be ready to check it out when it hits retailers.
isn't it the same concept as those instant photo cameras?

that's a great idea it would save us lot of time looking for a printer if we are out of our office or home!
