Boy, am I ever about to give you a great excuse to miss a few appointments! This year daylight saving time has been re-jiggered on the calendar in order to help save energy, but PC and consumer devices don't all know about the change.
That means you could potentially be an hour off for every appointment you have scheduled from March 11 (the new daylight saving time, 2007) through the first Sunday in April (the traditional, often programmed-into-software calendar date).
While the experts are saying we're not gearing up for anything as major as the old Y2K scare, there are concerns. Microsoft is reminding users not to take calendar appointments as the gospel truth during this new/old daylight saving time period.
Since blaming your PC for being late is going to get old real fast, you're probably going to want to get the jump on remedying the situation. Here are some pointers:
Here are some other common sense things you should do:
As for your other gadgets see the following sites:
Apple (to upgrade the OS)
You can help by getting on your cell phone carrier's case to get some software updates out. They seem to be the missing link.

ddtherrm: Good question! It does NOT save energy. If anything, it will cause more energy to be used!
This really makes no sence at all. I mean, An hour 2 weeks before the regular change to save on energy? I keep my lights on all day long, what diffrance does it make, honeslty?
Is Europe and Asia worried about day-light savings time? I think not. So if they can survive without it why can't we?
great info! let me offer another tool - every since i was a child, if i ever needed to know what the exact time was, no matter what area code i lived in, i could call 853-1212 (i live in los angeles), and every single time i called for over 30 years, i got the correct time. check it out in your area. it's a good tool to get you on track after the change!
Wow, if this is what I have to look forward too after college then someone help us all... reading and comment fighting over an article on Yahoo! during my lunch break. I personally found the article informative because I didn't know yet. Maybe if the internet could post Post-Its then we'd all be satisfied with a little memo you could either read or throw in the trash.
i am not sure what kind of energy this DST change saves, but anyone with any kind of storage stock will be happy that we are all posting responses. Keep on posting! I need to run outside and bend the blade on my sun dial!
Hey...what is the big deal. It is just a time change. Do what you would normally do and change the time. If it affects your electronic devices, just change the time on them also. It is just that simple. Oh....and slusaintsfan79......dude or dudette....you really really reall need to go back to school and learn how to spell!!! Just a thought if you are going to be posting stuff and dont want to be laughed at. But then again...you are a Saints fan. Yuck!
I have four VCR'S and one DVD player and they all work and why shouldn't they? This throwaway society will pay for their wastfulness one day. Turn your clocks ahead manually, or have you all become robots?
just reverse that last post, if yer late, or the other party is early, yer both nerds, by the way i still run a vcr.
Jesus....whatever happened the the watch????....
Reading these comments has certainly been entertaining. But what I don't understand is why there are so many mis-spelled words. If one does not know how to spell or spell-check themselves, don't computers come with this feature? Oh yeah, I know, It's the people who are too lazy to reset their watches to bother with spell-checking!
Well, what about the fact computer time needs to be accurate withing 5 minutes or so to log on to Windows domains, VPN and other time critical systems ?
Lets see if anyone agrees with me. I think this whole daylight savings time thing is a joke. I personally think its a way for the utility companies to take advantage of us the consumer. If they were really worried about saving energy they would reverse it. Longer days in the winter so that we have more daylight and it would be warmer longer (using less heat) and shorter days in the summer which would mean it would cool down faster at night (using less AC). Does anyone else agree with me. Or am I just a lunatic who doesnt know whats hes talking about.
Who cares...I mean really, don't you think you will have figured out what time it was by at least the next day?! Besides if your computer, or blackberry, or palm, or whatever else devices you are using these days gets messed up....you're just going to have to wait around like everyone else until the powers that be fix it...right? So, why not enjoy that "free time" and CHILL OUT!
I must agree with 'cet1953'; reading through the comments are very entertaining. I am wondering why no one has just suggested sticking with GMT... globally. We should get rid of 'time zones' period. That way, 'noon' is 'noon', no matter where you are. Certain RDBMS systems internal time zoned schedulers would ALL be syncrhonized saving the world s DBAs sanity. Oh well... in the mean time (pun intended) please dig through your desk or under the bed to find a plain old watch and set it manually. p.s. - banks are usually closed on Sunday anyway ;)
one more reason I like living in Arizona.......we have no time change.
This is canon821 and the other slow people out there. You all are the embarassing ones. If you should set the clocks foward but don't, you will be LATE not early. Use your heads for more than a air pocket.

To all of you who is complaining about each other, STOP!!! There's a lot more to worry about than what people have to say about DST. It seems like no one has nothing else better to do, than to complain about other needless matters. YES, I do not have anything else better to do right now. Heres a few points about consumerism 101: 1. If you dont know how to change the time manually on your gadget, open up your owners manual and check it out. You might learn a few more tricks about your gadget. 2. DST was started a long time ago. It hasn't changed much since then. I doubt it won't go away within our generation. In the meantime, DEAL WITH IT. 3. Stop worrying about this insignificant problem. If you worry about every little thing, you will be overstressed and will not continue to function. 4. The Y2K scare wasn't just about personal computers or devices. It was about our entire infrastructure. The problem was fixed before it could be a problem. Thats why most people wasn't affected. 5. DST was created to help the farmers out. I agree with most people, we really dont need it anymore. There's nothing I can really do about it right now. While everyone is complaining about everyone else, and this stupid little time change of DST, I'm going to relax with a nice cold beer, some peanuts and watch some R-rated movie. I hope everyone else follows my footsteps and just dont worry about it.
