Nintendo of America recently unveiled the essential details on its goofily named next-generation Wii (pronounced "we").The console will be available November 19 in the U.S., with a price tag of $249. This includes two controllers (the wireless Wii remote and the wired Nunchuck), and the five-in-one Wii Sports title. The company also unveiled Wii Channels (essentially, the system's interface, which also incorporates some cool entertainment features) and two other first-party titles available at launch (The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Excite Truck). At the launch in New York last week, I was able to get a few hours of hands-on time with previously unseen game levels, new titles, and, of course, the hardware.
What I liked
Innovative controllers: What seemed goofy at first turns out to be pretty ingenious. In the Wii Sports Boxing game, for example, you use the Nunchuk and the Wireless Controller (one in each hand) to punch at the screen, making the whole experience more realistic. It's also nifty in a game like Zelda, where the Nunchuk in the left hand moves the character around, while the Controller in the right serves as a sword controller.
Pick up and play: Many of the Wii titles on display were of the no-previous-experience-necessary puzzle (Wario Ware:Smooth Moves, Big Brain Academy) variety. And the motions you make using the controllers on Wii Sports so mimic the actual sports (you literally swing the controller like a tennis racket) that even "uncoordinated" types who have grade-school-gym-class-enforced familiarity with, say, baseball, would be able to pick up and play. Even well-established franchises such as Madden NFL 07 offer user-friendly tutorials for the uninitiated. Lapsed gamers intimidated by complicated Xbox 360 controllers may flock to the Wii.
Cool interface: I liked the Wii Channels, particularly the appropriately named Mii Channel that lets you create a cartoonish avatar of yourself. Like a version of you if you were a Gorillaz band member, this character can then be inserted into any number of games, including Wii Sports and Wario Ware. With more than six pages of facial hair (two alone for eyebrows) and other physical attributes, this feature is a personalization freak's dream. ![]()
What I didn't like
HD or not HD: I couldn't find anyone at Nintendo to give me a straight answer on whether games would be in 480p (same quality as DVDs) or 720p (HD-quality). The component video output—there's no state-of-the-art HDMI—indicates it could go either way. 480p would be nice to view pictures and videos stored on an SD card (which is what is offered on the Wii Photo Channel). And though games might look nice on a TV up to, say, 50 inches, Wii titles might suffer if projected onto a wall in 100 inches or on a fat 65-inch rear-projection set.
Thin launch lineup: Nintendo announced more than 40 first- and third-party titles due out by March 31, but it was not specific about exactly how many titles would be out at launch. If it's games you want, you're better off with an Xbox 360.
Boy, do my arms hurt: Whether "casting" a fishing rod to catch virtual bass in Zelda or tossing a bowling ball in Wii Sports, I nearly dislocated my shoulder using the wireless controller. Shoulder pain may be the gamers' new carpal tunnel syndrome as far as Wii's motion-based gameplay is concerned.
Bottom Line (for now)
At $250, the Wii isn't cheap, but it's still a bargain compared to the $599 PlayStation 3 and the $399 Xbox 360 Premium system. And unlike Sony, which is only making 400,000 PS3s available at launch, Nintendo says it will ship 4 million Wii units by December 31. So it's likely you'll actually be able to get one. But it's also likely that you'll be just as able to get an Xbox 360 with its more than 100 available titles by year's end. For now, only one thing's for sure: Until Sony gives us a compelling reason to buy the PS3 beyond it being an incredibly affordable Blu-ray disc player, either of these other choices is a winner.

It's really sad to see someone that has no knowledge or business playing video games get to have a hands-on preview of the system. A little beforehand research on the Wii would have been helpful for him. The Wii is not HD, it was never intended to be HD, and has been that way for a LONG time now.
I like the Wii. I want it because it is a very creative idea. Nintendo is trying to change the way you play video games. Take a look at the DS touch screen as an example.
I have been watching this thing since the first annoucnement on E3 2-3 years ago. At first i said Nah! I want a 360 and a PS3....but like most ppl that PS3 price is deadly lol. The XBOX360 still sounds good but its games are mostly sports, army/FPS, and besides Oblivion there are no good adventure/rpg games. Im going for the Wii, with its good price, cool controllers, and dang its just cool lol.
Some guy talked about this being cool...if you're 10, saying that he is 25 and that he'll do the PS-III. Well, I'm 44 and haven't bought myself a new console since the DreamCast. I've played XBox, PS-II and GameCube with my nephews, but none of them made me want one for myself. THIS thing I AM getting myself. It looks like real fun!
ADONZE40..... I am 23 years old and love both the Xbox and Sony, but I go only for the very best and the WII sounds like a winner to me. Its unfair to say that only kids use Nintendo.
Im sure nintendo will have some sort of normal controller for all you "classic" gamers. I however, am very excited about all the new innovations that the wii has. Just think about this as well, for all you DS owners... Imagine hooking up the wii; a revolutionary motion-sensitive controlling console; with a wireless touch screen handheld... Im very interested to see what can be done. I think a large portion of the gaming (and maybe non-gaming) world has been waiting for something like this. Bravo.
Personally, I am not quite convinced on the Wii. The idea sounds good, but the reality is, the Wii is just a repackaged Gamecube with a fancy controller. Do you really want to play Gamecube for the next 5 years? The whole Wii-mote, and waving it around thing sounded intriguing at first, but I think the novelty of it will wear off after 6 months. I like that Nintendo is taking some risks, but I think it will ultimately only be successful in Japan, while Xbox360 and PS3 battle it out everywhere else.
Nintendo Wii Is going to be a great system. It finally looks like Nintendo is comming back since in my mind gamecube was a fluke. New system, with an excellent controller which gets you involved in the game is going to be awesome. Also ZELDA!!! Only thing I'm worried about is they dont go down the gamecube road with so many kiddie games. Compared to the Xbox 360, Ps3 it will hold its own. So final note I am reall y looking forward to this compared to Ps3. I mean i love Sony but $600 and probably not being able to get one until two years later..I ll have fun with Wii. P.s dont complain about moving your arms with the controller..suck it up. Or go run into oncomming traffic
Well for starters, addressing your game limitation issue at launch time. It can also play any GC game, and will have the virtual console so I'd say that will easily surpass the number of x-box games. Also I don't know about anyone else, but I play games with my wrist, not with my whole arm so I don't see that an issue. Also the Wii is designed with everyone in mind. Nintendo is guaranteeing more mature titles to be available, as well as older ones on the Wii (Think N64's Conker's bad fur day) and if you want a pick-up-and-play game in your spare time the PS3 can't do that, the loading screens by themselves take up most of the time, and then there's the tutorials, learning the controls, the massive levels and button patterns to memorize... the Wii on the other hand is designed for pick-up-and-play versatility, the control interface not needing tutorials or practice time. I don't know what you guys are talking about saying PS3 is better for a spare time system. Not to mention not all games will require you to, god forbid, move your arms, especially all th past titles you can download onto it from SNES, NES, N64, Genesis, etc. If you liked the N64 so much then the Wii is your system since it can download N64 games. And lastly you can get a blu-ray player for a lot cheaper than $600, and I can guarantee if it actually takes off, in two years they will only cost $5. Oh yeah, and I'm 20 and I have had mine pre-ordered since february and I would never even dream of a PS3 since it's prettymuch the exact same as a PS2 with better graphics.
480p does NOT look good on a 50" Plasma. Put down the crack.
nice point adonze40, i will be purchasing the ps3.
i personally like nintendo games. thats just my thing. i love the cartoon world and zelda like games that come along with nintendo. its the traditional video game system and i dont think anyone can beat it. i am looking for ward to buying the wii. i think it is a good idea that you are able to interact with the game and act like you are there swinging a bat because thats whats wrong with todays people, they have all become so lazy and over weight that they wont even put forth a simple effort to swing a remote. and in my oppinion thats pretty sad.
As for the problems with the controllers, those people who dislike this system can also choose to plug their old GameCube controllers in, and use those instead. There are some games that may not be fully compatible with the old controller, but I'm sure that the main allure of those games will be the motion sensors in the new controls.
The only real bad thing bout Wii is no HD, but this guy is no non preofessional to say the Wiimote is tiresome, every reviewer from E3 and Sept. 14 said it was you'll never get tired, unless you are some dude who spents most time on couch, eating pizza, with a big belly and rarely seen daylight. As for the PS3, it's so unrecommended against Wii... games cost 70 bucks, and fragile Blu-Ray discs will only be used by Sony, who is being beaten by every other industry other than videogames; the console has a bad lineup and ... it's 600 bucks!! Sorry Sony, time to give up the throne to either Microsoft or Nintendo, step down please.
I dont really wanna be waving my arms around like a lunatic when Im playing a game. WTF this console is for 6 yo's. Hardly the core gaming market "18-25" NONE of the launch titles is remotely appealing
Yea the wii is going to blow the whole world away. I dont care what hd it has i just want to play the Twilight princess and and the other super samsh bros games and tom, just cause your like 50 that dosent mean that it will hurt everyone elses arms that are like me 16. Dont be a retard.
The Wii does not ship with two controllers. It ships with only one.
The Wii rocks!! I've wanted to get it since I heard of the Revolution years ago. I lovee the new contollers. They are so awesome. AND its backwards compatible! That so rocks! I can't wait for it to come out!
The sales will speak for themselves!

You sissies will get use to the Wii if your arms hurt in the beginning. A bit of exercise will help loosen those muscles and give you some good definition in your arms. I think I'll be ready to join the Mr. Universe contest when I'm done with Zelda.
