Hands-on with Nintendo Wii

Nintendo of America recently unveiled the essential details on its goofily named next-generation Wii (pronounced "we").The console will be available November 19 in the U.S., with a price tag of $249. This includes two controllers (the wireless Wii remote and the wired Nunchuck), and the five-in-one Wii Sports title. The company also unveiled Wii Channels (essentially, the system's interface, which also incorporates some cool entertainment features) and two other first-party titles available at launch (The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Excite Truck). At the launch in New York last week, I was able to get a few hours of hands-on time with previously unseen game levels, new titles, and, of course, the hardware.

What I liked

Innovative controllers:
What seemed goofy at first turns out to be pretty ingenious. In the Wii Sports Boxing game, for example, you use the Nunchuk and the Wireless Controller (one in each hand) to punch at the screen, making the whole experience more realistic. It's also nifty in a game like Zelda, where the Nunchuk in the left hand moves the character around, while the Controller in the right serves as a sword controller.

Pick up and play: Many of the Wii titles on display were of the no-previous-experience-necessary puzzle (Wario Ware:Smooth Moves, Big Brain Academy) variety. And the motions you make using the controllers on Wii Sports so mimic the actual sports (you literally swing the controller like a tennis racket) that even "uncoordinated" types who have grade-school-gym-class-enforced familiarity with, say, baseball, would be able to pick up and play. Even well-established franchises such as Madden NFL 07 offer user-friendly tutorials for the uninitiated. Lapsed gamers intimidated by complicated Xbox 360 controllers may flock to the Wii.

Cool interface: I liked the Wii Channels, particularly the appropriately named Mii Channel that lets you create a cartoonish avatar of yourself. Like a version of you if you were a Gorillaz band member, this character can then be inserted into any number of games, including Wii Sports and Wario Ware. With more than six pages of facial hair (two alone for eyebrows) and other physical attributes, this feature is a personalization freak's dream.

What I didn't like

HD or not HD: I couldn't find anyone at Nintendo to give me a straight answer on whether games would be in 480p (same quality as DVDs) or 720p (HD-quality). The component video output—there's no state-of-the-art HDMI—indicates it could go either way. 480p would be nice to view pictures and videos stored on an SD card (which is what is offered on the Wii Photo Channel). And though games might look nice on a TV up to, say, 50 inches, Wii titles might suffer if projected onto a wall in 100 inches or on a fat 65-inch rear-projection set.

Thin launch lineup:
Nintendo announced more than 40 first- and third-party titles due out by March 31, but it was not specific about exactly how many titles would be out at launch. If it's games you want, you're better off with an Xbox 360.

Boy, do my arms hurt: Whether "casting" a fishing rod to catch virtual bass in Zelda or tossing a bowling ball in Wii Sports, I nearly dislocated my shoulder using the wireless controller. Shoulder pain may be the gamers' new carpal tunnel syndrome as far as Wii's motion-based gameplay is concerned.

Bottom Line (for now)

At $250, the Wii isn't cheap, but it's still a bargain compared to the $599 PlayStation 3 and the $399 Xbox 360 Premium system. And unlike Sony, which is only making 400,000 PS3s available at launch, Nintendo says it will ship 4 million Wii units by December 31. So it's likely you'll actually be able to get one. But it's also likely that you'll be just as able to get an Xbox 360 with its more than 100 available titles by year's end. For now, only one thing's for sure: Until Sony gives us a compelling reason to buy the PS3 beyond it being an incredibly affordable Blu-ray disc player, either of these other choices is a winner.

Always funny when people who report on things they know little about offer uninformed comments. Yes, there wil be a decent amount of titles at release. To say get an XBOX because it has more games is ridiculous since that system has been out for months. Remember, Nintendo tries to make gaming fun for everyone and not just for 10 year olds - as posted above. The controller is innovative and seriously doubt you will throw your shoulder out. Don't forget that the overpriced games on XBOX and Playstation can generally be played on a PC for much cheaper and with improved graphics.

The PS3 has a similar motion detection system as the Wii. You can shell out $600+ for basically the same gameplay with the PS3. So in my opinion, your just going to throw your money away when you purchase the PS3. Nintendo has always been underestimated by alot of gamers, but I have stuck with Nintendo for about the last 20 years, and I will always stay a die hard Nintendo supporter. PS2 and Xbox have had there moment of grace, so beware of the Wii (Revolution)!!!!!!!!!!

Once again, a so-called media type not giving all the true answers and bashing Sony. It will be a shame that you have directed consumers to make a purchase without even thinking about the future. Do consumers a favor and detail how this will help them not only now but 2 or 3 years from now or else they'll be out buying something else and the so called savings for a cheaper unit will be out the door.

Yeah, you know what I am sorry this would be ok for my kid on my old TV set for 480p, but on my 55 inch Hitachi plasma why would I even bother?? "best initial game line up in console history!" Yeah if you were a six year old. Come on people you can put nice graphics on Mario Bros. and a new name, maybe some more levels but chees and crackers its the same damned game!! Come on now this is for serious comments! I have the 360 LOVE IT and I will buy the PS3 too just to have a blue ray player and thats it Sony has not put out anything new (I.E.- GT4 what a ripoff! Boring) SHAME ON YOU SONY!! But at least you went HD like X-box 360!! I had lots of hopes for Wii but once again you can put a bow on the same old crap and throw in really cool controlers but its still the same old crap with new controlers! BORING!!

i dont know whut this dude is talking about. the wii kicks butt... before all of you start complaining about the wii control explain to me why is it that sony got rid of the rumble feature to include a motion sensor in their controllers.. obviosly it was beacuse they knew they have no chance of competing with nintendo. im more excited about the wii than any other console and im planning to get both the ps3 AND wii...so back off all ya nintendo haters

First and Formost!!! The Wii is not in a CLASS of the XBOX 360 or PS3... Nintendo has ALWAYS been in a class by itself except back in the day of Sega... Yes they are all three the NEXT GEN, but The 360 and PS3 are the only ones that you can even justify as comparin side by side... The Wii is for ALL OF US... Adults like myself or want to relive their childhood days and share the spirit of turning on the NES for the First time as a kid again... It's for that Parent who wants to get lost in a world of nothing, but himself and his inner kid. It's a great way to bond with your kids... A way to show them what we had compared to what they have... It's just simply the best of the best for US ALL!!! The HD feature is no biggy... Heck it's not an IT thing right now with, if I read correctly, only 14% of the US having at least a 720i and above capable TV... So that as slow as it's going to be to come out is no biggy... Nintendo Wanted to deliver a cheaper unit so why not cut this I'm glad they did... DVD Playback... This one is one I wish they had, but as they stated almost everyone has a DVD player somewhere in the house so why pay for another one... Those are the two main ones I come up with as complaints... Everything else is simply awesome... I'm with Nintendo all the way and can't wait to utilize my DS Lite with it... dtmoore555

For one thing, Nintendo has many good games coming out soon even if they are not out by launch and 3rd party developers have created many good games for the Wii for launch and afterwords. The Wii is looking great and you don't have to use full-motion-like swings or so with the controller (which will probably cause shoulder pain etc.) It does make the experience more fun to do a full-motion swing. For example, if you play a baseball game and swing it like a bat for like hours at a time, it will probably cause cramps or pain but you will learn that you won't have to experience pain if you just lessen the amount of motion you put into the swing. Hard to say, but I just don't want non-gamers reading this guy's review of the Wii and thinking that they can't play it because it causes pain or etc. Anyway nice article, I look forward to the Wii and future Nintendo products.

if you want to shell out $600+ tax and $60-$70+ for games for the ps3.. go right ahead... the ps3 is very hard to make games for cause of the complicated cpu's... and it being blue ray is going to keep the games expensive... no doubt the ps3 will have great games but why all this childish bashing? whether you get he ps3 or the wii, who cares... I'll admit now i am going to get a wii cause it is a lot less... and will have some great games like zelda at launch... and the only thing people seem to brag about the ps3 is it can play blue ray movies... who cares about movies, your going to shell out 30+ bucks for a blue ray dvd movie that about 95% of the population won't be able to tell if its a blue ray dvd or regular dvd movie... games are going to be cheaper and easier to make for the wii.. and if ps3 comes out with some real good games.. then i may get that too...

It's a great idea with what Nintendo did the the controller on it's new console, Wii. Personally, I always wanted to see what it feels like to actucally be in the game. And it has Zelda: Twilight Princess as one of it's release titles? What else could you ask for? I'm 21 years old and I am already convinced that the Nintendo Wii will dominate the video game market. Not for the price, games or just because it's nintendo, it's because of it's idea. I would rather much pay for this than that crazy amount that Sony is charging for it's PS3. Never been a fan of the PS2 and PS3 and what the deal with the $600 price tag? We aren't rich and some of us can afford it and don't want to waste money on something that is going to be returned in a week. Good job Nintendo for bringing this cool idea.

I find it funny that this so called "professional" would spend many key moments in his review pushing the Xbox360 even though its supposed to be about the Wii. And the fact the he conviently forgot to mention the Wii's most touted feature. The ability to soon after launch to download Nintendo, snes, nes64, turbo grafix 16,and sega genesis games. Realistically after a few months this system will have more titles then any, even ps3 with its backwards compatibility. Not including the massive amount of launch. He went out of his way to promote the 360 and slam the ps3 and Wii. I wish that some one payed to review the Wii would at least know one of its most promoted features. The downloading of old games is going to be one of the major selling points of the system, to not even mention it suggests he has no interest in doing a fare review. Its like doing a review of 360 and not mentioning the multiplayer aspect or the ps3 having the massive bludisk space. What a fraud.

THIS GUY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. The line-up is great for the wii, and good luck finding a PS3 with only 400,000 shipping to the USA. You won't even end up paying $600...try $1000, Wii is GREAT!

Wow dude. Why are you, someone who know's nothing about the Wii, reviewing it. I've played the wii, and belive me it's nothing like this 75 year old man was talking about. First off, wii has the best launch in history, and your saying its crappy! ZELDA for example is one of the launch titles. It is also the funnest system hands down. I was playing wii sports and it was amazingly fun. The wii channels are awesome, the virual console games are cheap, and YOUR ARMS WILL NOT HURT. Tom Samiljan... U SUK

Man you guys obviously havn't seen red steel, sadness, or many other games that are coming to the Wii. They aren't cartoony at all and the graphics are amazing. Open your eyes people. Besides, if you want life-like graphics, go outside.

This is going to be the game system I get. The games on XBOX360 aren't any better than the old ones on XBOX. They just look prettier. At some point I think most of us are figuring out that prettier doesn't make the game more fun. Well designed games make the game more fun. Originality makes a game fun and I think Wii has that over PS3 and XBOX360. I can't wait to get one.
