I love the built-in backup cams found on high-end luxury sedans such as the Infiniti M45, but getting that kind of feature on a car usually requires annoying custom installation or cumbersome do-it-yourself installation with wires.
The Roadmaster Wireless Backup camera is the kind of installation-godsend that home-theater-in-a-box systems with wireless rear speakers are—namely, it's easy to set up because you don't have to run unsightly wires under carpets to connect the thing. But it's not that easy—you still have to hard wire the camera, running a cable from its mount on the license plate to your car's reverse light circuit.
The camera attaches to the top of your license plate holder and the 2.5-inch LCD monitor fits onto your dashboard, and uses the cigarette lighter for power. Then anytime you reverse, you can see what's behind the car on the screen. The camera is activated by the reverse light—hence the aforementioned connection.
I wouldn't recommend this as a complete replacement to turning your head, but it really does help with anything that might literally be right under your car (it has an 80-degree vertical camera viewing angle, and 100-degree horizontal viewing angle). And for $139.99, it sure beats the $41,000-plus smackeroos a luxury sedan like the M45 will cost you.

There are now TWO versions, both with the same part number(VRBCS300W): One version has 2 buttons, and the newer version has 4 buttons, which adds brightness and contrast controls. I know this because I returned the first one in an attempt to get one that had a stable picture. The replacement had two more buttons, but was still as unstable as the original. Also, please note that the ACTUAL field of view as measured by me, is only 57 degrees horizontal. That's pretty far off from their quoted specs of "110 degree" field of view.
The concept of a wireless backup camera is very good. I bought one from Walmart and went through the trouble of drilling a hole, taking apart covering in the chunk, etc to install the camera. But I could not get a picture on the LCD screen unless I held the LCD outside of my car window and raised the camera to form a direct line of sight between them. The company's tech support said it was a defective part. They also said it might be due to the wireless smartkey keyless entry system in my Camry Hybrid. I will get an exchange, and I hope it will work out.
Bought it and installed in about an hour and a half in a 2002 Suburban. It flickers when backing up (not good). This morning, the monitor did not come on when put in reverse until I placed it in park and then in reverse a second time. I'll call tech suppert.

I just purchased this model. The package says installation is easy as 1-2-3. No it is not. If you want to hide the wires, the harness that they give for the cigarette adapter is way too short. When I placed the camera on the license plate of my acura mdx, other than drilling through the body, there is no way to run this cable neatly to wires dont run down the back door of the car. The camera to wire it properly must be tapped into the reverse lights. This requires taking apart the back interior of the car. Then I traced where I would need to run the wires and the wires are too short as well. Good idea, but not consumer installable for most people. A better idea would be to have this perhaps mounted to the cyclopse light in the back on the bottom of it and as I have seen some are selling a rear view mirror that has a built in lcd so you dont have all these things hanging around in the car. What about an after market gps that also functions with an optional camera that has a built in lithium ion battery that hooks attaches the same way as this does and you activate it with the touch of a button on the gps and it turns off automatically in two minutes
