Well, the PlayStation 3 launch has come and gone. Hundreds of people who had been waiting in line all week got drenched last night by torrential downpours, in New York City, anyway. Turns out that flipping your $600 60GB PS3 wasn't such a bad idea, as this $15,100 winning bid on eBay yesterday attests. $15,100 for four days of work and a lifetime of memories is a good gig by any standard
So maybe some of the people waiting in line were there for the love of games, but just who are the high-rollers willing to spend $15,000 on a PS3 with only a handful of games out (two of which are Resistance: Fall of Man and NBA 07)? Must be really rich people who are also hardcore gamers, of which there must be plenty in some tech and celeb circles. There is obviously a certain cachet in having one of the rarest and most sought-after gadgets of 2007 in your hands. (And honestly, I just got the PS3 here and Resistance: Fall of Man is stunning-looking-and-playing so far—more on that in just a bit).
Even if PS3 turns out to be a flop, it will be a flop of epic proportions, which means that one day you could sell it to a museum. And let's not forget that in this era of Bubble 2.0 and high-flying stocks, there are plenty of parents of kids who have it all and want it all this holiday—the Veruca Salts of video games.
One thing's for sure: By coming out two days before the Wii, the PS3 has stolen much of the thunder, news-wise, from Nintendo (which launches its console tonight).
How much would you pay for a PS3?
