Sure, HDTV deals abound, but nothing beats the discounts you get on electronics after the holidays. Retailers eager to move gadgets and components in time for the new stock in February (fresh off the announcements for new products and technology at January's Consumer Electronics Show).
Ideally, you'll have a hefty gift certificate or card to apply to heavily discounted big-ticket purchases.
Now, you can start flipping through the circulars that will come in newspapers most likely to find deals, or you can use a much more efficient method by visiting a site like Dealnews, which rounds up the best deals on all kinds of items throughout the year. Like last year, Dealnews plans to offer specific information as early as December 25 on post-holiday sales and deals at more than 30 electronics retailers, including Amazon, RadioShack, and Geeks.com. You can also check online comparison sites like BizRate and Yahoo! Shopping or visit sales blogs such as The Bargainist or The Consumerist.
What kinds of things can you/should you look out for: I'd say HDTVs (CRT, DLP, or flat-panel LCD). Ignore the EDTVs or SDTVs that'll probably be heavily marked down and pushed. You can also get deals on cameras, GPS systems, refurbished iPods (follow the happenings at the January Macworld Conference and Expo for a new product announcement of some sort, most likely), among other items.
Other post-holiday deal roundups are sure to surface: Check through some of the earlier posts on Yahoo! Tech about holiday shopping deals for Web addresses and sites to find deals (see links below).

By Holidays are we just talking xmas or are you saying to wait for the start of the new year.
Bogus advice. The new stuff doesn't arrive in February. Retailers will be clearing inventory well into March. Margins on HDTV's are already thin as can be (see CC & BBY third quarter earnings comments) so don't expect additional big reductions over what has been offered this Xmas. Most of the GOOD stuff has sold through and what will be cleared has already been rejected by the Xmas cutomer as not a very good value. Unless NEW technology is offered on the new lines introduced there is no reason for the retailer to take a loss. Just sell the older stuff and buy new inventory as is sells through.
I'm waiting for HDMI 1.3 becomes more prevalent.
EDTV and SDTV are not high definition. They work for standard def and DVD's just fine but for not much more money you might as well get HDTV.
Correct me if I'm wrong. If you ignore the EDTV's & the SDTV's won't they eventually rise up in revolt in an effort to gain attention.
Look at the 1080 lpi. plasma and lcd TV's. They have the highest resolution and it probably won't get any better than that for a few years.
I have millions of dollars, I will buy 1, maybe 2 plasmas for everyone, who wants them?!
Wait because some time this year Laser tv should be coming out from Mitsubishi and its going to blow away all plasma and LCD tvs
Best Buy's prices now are better than they will be post Holiday's.
To respond to MonsterPlayer's comment about ignoring EDTV and SDTV ,both are what one can truly say are outdated technology. Those two are what we've been watching for the last 40 years, and will be marked terrifically cheap after the holidays to make space. HDTV is the only real choice, don't be fooled by a new name for an old TV.
you do not know what you are talking about! Stores have goten wise to shoppers who hold off till after christmas, to catch the so called after chistmas sale. There have not been a good post christmas sale in a decade. Most stores pull christmas stock off the shelves and wholesale that stock rather than take a hit during chistmas,so good luck and thanks. chrismas wholesaler b.c
aT bEST bUY IF THE PRICE GOES DOWN THEY WILL GIVE U A REFUND IF THE PRICE GOES DOWN WITHIN 60 DAYS
Why on earth does anyone spend $2000 on a machine to put their butt in front of? Heck, how much quality TV is there? Think about what you could do with the money and with the time you would save by reducing your TV time and budget. Then again we are dealing with the typical person who has the typical consumer culture priorities. We are also dealing with the typical person who will be paying for this TV for the next twelve months.
plasma TV's are still way to high conidering they break down after 3 years. no matter what the price I will stick with a bulky tv that lasts. Just like I will buy honda or toyota because they are made to last for longer than it takes to pay for them. will we ever get back to an honest product for an honest price? I doubt it!!!!
If you wait, you will see newer products and want them instead, and then wait for the deal, blah, blah, blah. you see what you want buy it.......
whst a lame article. a little more research and this could have been informitave. after reading the story i still saee no reason to wait if i was buying. not one metion of the new lazer tv thats comming out next year, thats the reason you should wait. man yahoo is loosing it. to bad google is lame too. are these the supposed new message boards? wheres the title for your post? no rec button. die yahoo. die
We just purchased a 50 inch Panasonic Plasma TV for just over $2000 (with a $200 rebate) from Circuit City. Sure we might have saved another $100 by waiting til after Christmas, but we'd been researching TV's for a year or so and finally decided to go for it. Best picture we've ever seen. REally happy with it.
I agree.. Buy from Amazon.com- They have by FAR the best prices.
Tom, while I appreciate the general concept of your article, the lack of specifics was incredibly disappointing. Saying there are going to be post-holiday sales (on just about any product) is about as helpful as saying the malls are going to be crowded on Black Friday. It kind of falls under the "no duh" category. How about some examples of what kinds of discounts we might expect to see post-Christmas? For example, will the discounts be up to 10% off of current prices? Twenty percent? More? Are some products generally discounted more than others? Do some retailers generally offer bigger mark-downs than others? I understand we'll need to do some of our own homework to see who has the best deals, but your article would be far more helpful if it gave some concrete examples based on post-holiday sales in previous years and/or your own experiences.

EDTV and SDTVs are pure crap. Buy a plasma, research it.
