The Skinny on Post-Holiday Sales

Sure, HDTV deals abound, but nothing beats the discounts you get on electronics after the holidays. Retailers eager to move gadgets and components in time for the new stock in February (fresh off the announcements for new products and technology at January's Consumer Electronics Show).

Ideally, you'll have a hefty gift certificate or card to apply to heavily discounted big-ticket purchases.

Now, you can start flipping through the circulars that will come in newspapers most likely to find deals, or you can use a much more efficient method by visiting a site like Dealnews, which rounds up the best deals on all kinds of items throughout the year. Like last year, Dealnews plans to offer specific information as early as December 25 on post-holiday sales and deals at more than 30 electronics retailers, including Amazon, RadioShack, and Geeks.com. You can also check online comparison sites like BizRate and Yahoo! Shopping or visit sales blogs such as The Bargainist or The Consumerist.

What kinds of things can you/should you look out for: I'd say HDTVs (CRT, DLP, or flat-panel LCD). Ignore the EDTVs or SDTVs that'll probably be heavily marked down and pushed. You can also get deals on cameras, GPS systems, refurbished iPods (follow the happenings at the January Macworld Conference and Expo for a new product announcement of some sort, most likely), among other items.

Other post-holiday deal roundups are sure to surface: Check through some of the earlier posts on Yahoo! Tech about holiday shopping deals for Web addresses and sites to find deals (see links below).

the prices are always on the go down, but then something newer and better comes out. \its the electronic circle, something replaces something else. i work in retail, it happens. GO for what you have your eye on now, cus there are so many options out there its silly. Pioneer or panasonic baby! tis the only way to go ;)

There's no such thing as a "right time" to buy a TV. The same TV can drop $200 one week and be $300 more the next. Research is the way to win this game. If you find a great price, don't wait - buy it. Besides, the word is that these crazy price drops will not last much longer - the industry can't sustain itself if it continues to drop.

Answer to tnchaplin2000: Honest product for honest prie? In 70s a decent TV would cost you almost your monthly pay check. Nowdays you can spend your monthly pay check on super-cool HDTV, or you can pay $400 for a very good 32 inch tube TV. I call it choise... or perhaps a honest product system. Same goes for almost any product. If you pay $70 for DVD player with up-converter, don't expect it last 10 years. If you pay $400 for washer/dryer, don't expect it to last life time, like washer/dryer your mother paid her monthly pay check for...

I think that what is said in this article is very true. Many people get caught up on their holiday wish list and end up spending too much. Instead its wise to wait and see what better deal you can catch. Try waiting until x-mas is over, I'm sure you'll find a great deal out there .

Crutchfield has the best warranty and prices. Purchased the 46" Sony KDF-46E2000 for $1150.00 with a 5 year $200 IN HOME warranty and free shipping 3 weeks ago. Best Buy and Circuit City cant touch that. Also their Cust Serv is incredible.

and to dxqp05 i recommend buying one when you want to buy one. i dont pressure my people into buying their tvs now because it does me no good if they are not happy. i inform you what you will need based on the questions i ask and make sure its going to function the way YOU want it too

or just wait for lazer projection tvs in about a year. the hd tvs only give you 50% of the color spectrum. Lazer tvs will give you 90% of the color spectrum. just wait and see. it will blow your mind.

The writer of this article is a no nothing dope hired (probably inexpensively) to fill space. Prices have plummted on this category and are most reasonable levels. They are flying off the shelves. If there is one thing merchants won't be stuck with after the holidays it's TVs. Sure, prices will continue to slide, but for every month you wait for another $50 drop, you're spending a month looking at a crappy screen when could be enjoying yourself. I attend the CES each year. It is NOT a show to demonstrate in January what will be in stores in February. It is a show to project the entire next years offerings. It will showcase current continuing models, models to be release in the coming months and protypes of releases for later in the year. Do yourself a favor: realize most of what you see on Yahoo is by dopes for dopes.

WOW Ok Circuit City has been so aggressive they have lost millions to gain market share from Best Buy. They did not think we would do it to dent the Big Blues margin but we did and we will be just fine. After Xmas budgets drop and the pressure is off...really. If you do not score now you would be foolish. You can get 24 months no interest and now payments at Circuit TODAY. Keep waiting....kinda funny. I have been watching HDTV for 4 years while "many waited for a slightly better deal". Come on..do not be 5 years late to a party. Good Luck and God loves you.

Yeah! And, of course, you should buy one from caster tv's! Act now and you might get 75% off!! That's totally not right! I'll wait 'til the one I want falls into the $400 to $600 bracket and let the hyper-tech geeks waste their hard-earned cash on the next big thing!

This thirst for the lowest price is why all the jobs are going to China. We have been conditioned to hold off on purchasing until the retailers are losing money on the transaction. Stop destroying our culture!

Ignore the EDTVs and SDTVs because they're outmoded technology. It makes no sense to buy a standard or enhanced def tv now, and then have to buy high def in two years or so when HDTV becomes the only thing out there.

My girlfriend just bought a flat-tube SDTV... great investment. "Low end" TV's come with a lot more than they did 4 years ago... I don't even have S-video on the 25" tv i bought back then, my girlfriend's new $3xx 25" tv has a flat tube, 3 video inputs include s-video and component input, and 480p mode! You know... if you can't afford a big screen HDTV, you don't need it!!!! And what the heck is EDTV? I never even heard of it!
