The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 may have a treasure trove of HD and other media capabilities, but don't count the Nintendo Wii out just yet in the add-ons-to-gaming category. Starting today, the console is making the Wii News Channel available for free to all Wii owners who have their consoles hooked up to the Internet. What exactly is the Wii News Channel? Well, it's no Blu-ray disc, but it is a whimsical, interactive news service featuring the latest headlines from the Associated Press.
Users can click on the Wii News Channel icon and get to a spinning virtual globe onscreen, then point to different locations on the globe to find local news around the world. Besides the geographic organization, headlines are also categorized by categories such as Business, Sports, Arts/Entertainment, Technology, and Science/Health. News is constantly updated in real-time. Text sizes can be adjusted, which will make it easier for grandparents to get involved with the Wii family gaming lifestyle!
Okay, so it's no high-def Blu-ray, much less regular DVD-capability, but I for one think this will do every bit as much as Big Brain Academy to keep minds young and old flowing with mental activity beyond one-note shoot-em-ups. I applaud Nintendo for refreshingly smart and innovative move!
What do you think? Does news have any place on a gaming console?

Maybe Nintendo should devote itself more to online gaming (a la Xbox Live) instead of giving us something I can already get from Yahoo or cnn.com.
thats the most retardest thing ive evr heard, nobody wants to watch the news on the wi no matter how "fun" u make it sound, face it the ps3 and xbox 360 have the wi beat so they should just stop its embaressing
wii news may not be the best idea but its games are fun and interactive. i work at a game store and there are more people wanting a wii than any other system. wii may not have the hardware that the 360 or ps3 has but it is still a good system
i rly liked this article because it rly helped in school and we have to write and essay every week on latest tech. but this rly helped me and if someone is reading my comment rite now THIS ARTICLE ROCKZ!!!
The Koss Sparkplug earbuds are a budget headphone choice that sound pretty good and are comfortable ...

I believe that this is an outstanding idea. Personally, I don't have much time these days to open a newspaper to look for something I am interested in, so this could be a really easy way to just pick out the interesting things, quickly and efficiently. Perhaps it will also make people less ignorant to what's happening around them...Yay for informing the populus.
