Hands-on: PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote

The PlayStation 3 may double as an excellent Blu-ray disc player, but having the SIXAXIS gaming controller serve as the sole remote was a major drawback—until now. I just got the Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc (BD) remote control, which came out in Japan in December, but is at last getting a U.S. release (and costs a refreshingly affordable $25). I'm happy to say it completely transforms the movie viewing experience on the PS3.

The controller looks just like a regular remote and has all the typical Blu-ray/DVD player controls you know and love (Play, Scan, Skip, Eject, and the like), so operating everything—from starting up a movie and advancing to a new scene to accessing the in-movie menu—is a familiar and straightforward experience. It really beats trying to remember which gaming button to press to get to the next scene, a trial that usually ends up stopping playback altogether (it's got the traditional X, O, square and triangle buttons, just in case you miss them, but they're really too small for gaming).

I did have to download the latest PS3 software update, which took about 20 minutes, but otherwise getting the Bluetooth-enabled remote up and running was quick and painless.

If you do any movie-watching with your PS3,  you'll get a lot out of this new remote.

I just purchased a brand new PS 3 - 40 GB system and sent away for a free remote (after purchasing 2 Blu Ray DvD’s) I received the RC and tried many times to “pair it up” in the accessories tab under Blue Tooth devises. I finally called Sony and they told me the RC was bad, so I went to Target to buy another one. This new one also would NOT pair up with my PS3. I called Sony again, who seemed clueless on the RC and they told me that my PS3 was bad. So I brought that back and got a brand new one and guess what… It also will not pair up to my RC! Any suggestions, advise, a hammer? J Thanks, Al BTW, My PS3 SW version is at 2.0
