Why I Love the BlackBerry Pearl, Part One

I've been meaning to write up the BlackBerry Pearl for a couple of weeks now, but wanted to give it a thorough test drive. Now that I've had a chance to play around with it, I can safely say that it's quite possibly my favorite new phone this year, even though it only runs on the EDGE network for data (versus the faster "3G" high-speed EV-DO networks of Verizon and Sprint or the HSDPA network of Cingular Wireless). But enough about the network for now. What I reallly love about the Pearl is its solid and smooth software and efficient processing: So far, I haven't had any slowdowns or glitches.

By contrast, barely a day goes by when the Motorola Q I have doesn't freeze up or slow down in mid-process, or when my email doesn't show up for some mysterious reason--a real deal-breaker for a phone that otherwise boasts a fantastic slim design, excellent phone-call quality, and a huge color screen. The Blackberry Pearl is similarly compact, but so far I've been getting my emails in real-time without a hitch and taking nice 1.3-megapixel pictures and sending them via MMS with no problem--all on the fly at home in the U.S. or on a recent trip to Europe. I'll be posting more later about this revolutionary new device, because there's a lot to say.

Dear macaco_d: Let me tell you that I guess is a matter of luck. My husband have a Qtek 9600 (at T-Mobile they call it T-Mobile MDA) and he says is the worst telephone that he has ever had. His birthday is next week, so I'm thinking of getting him the new Blackberry Pearl.

I like my BlackBerry Pearl and it's quite small compared to the palm treo that I'm used to. It's taking me a while to get used to the small phone but I definitely love the design. I will have to call tech support for assistance with syncing the phone. I do have one tiny complaint -- My games from Palm didn't transfer to the blackberry :-(

I love this phone!!! The only thing is I wish pocket mac would hurry up and put out the softwear so I can use it on my mac. I can get around some of it by e-mailing pics to my phone. Media doesnt play unless its an .avi for matte and most phones cant just change that.

I had the Pearl for 10 days, I returned it, to small for my hands, went with the 8077. The pearl is a womens blackberry not for a man

This is my absolute favorite phone of all time. Not only does it blend the slim styling and function (think razor+blackberry=Blackberry Pearl)..but my favorite feature is the voice dialing. No training required....everyone at work is jealous!

Make sure you note that this review is calling it a phone and is comparing the hardware and features as a Q/phone competitor. This model is for the consumer, it is not the business messaging tool for the road warrior.

i had mine for two days and returned it for an 8700c. the keyboard is AWFUL and it deleted my entire SIM card when the store employee tried to import my numbers from my Razr. terrible device. i love the 8700c, then i use it for business not to look trendy.

The main reason I don't like this and other phones is because when it rings there is someone on the other end wanting something.

I'm a Handspring/PalmOne User. Ever since the Treo600 and Palm Desktop, I've never seen or used a phone that is so easy to setup and use (and virus free, unlike OutLook). I have owned the crappy PocketPC back in 2003, I sold it on ebay to get the Treo160 flip phone. That was an okay phone, until you were in direct sunlight, but still practical use (no videos, no photos - just SMS, contacts' and cellphone) it was a better than the Pocket PC. I also purchased the MDA from TMobil, which was not for me either. It (the MDA) is a nifty phone, but I USE my Treo600 phone more than just a phone - dictionary, video camera, digital camera, notes, phone numbers, recipes, website urls, html script code storage, SMS, MMS, send faxes and more! And now there is the Treo650, a great phone, now with BlueTooth built in! The Pearl looks neat and for the average person who only uses a phone to talk, it is GREAT. Try to enter in a paragraph of info in a minute and tell me how far you get? It is a pretty phone, just like the RazR (aka Razor) was when it first came out. It is windows based which is why I chose not to go with this phone. Ebay has supported me in fnding a replacement for my Treo600 that has a buzz on the phone when it is not plugged in. I'm going to stick by my Treo600 and Palm Desktop for the ease of use.

I had the Pearl over a week and didnt like it one bit. I couldnt get use to the keys and you have to have web connections to use half the functions which means more on the bill. Ring tones can not be downloaded from Tmobile sight. Just too many quirks to figure out. I ended up going with an SDA phone from Tmobile. I love it! Also editors from cnet rank the SDA up in the top 5 and the pearl was way down like #8 or 9.

The best gadget deal this year! BELIEVE ALL THE HYPE!!! Most of the settings are similiar to the newer B'berry brand units - seamless upgrade transition - great "secret" features that you forget about till you need them.

Great Phone.....there is a lot to learn, any phone is not "user" friendly, you gotta learn how to use it. I text a lot and the key board is great, it's not hard at all....if you used a regular keypad to type, this one will be easier.....
