Why I Love the BlackBerry Pearl, Part One

I've been meaning to write up the BlackBerry Pearl for a couple of weeks now, but wanted to give it a thorough test drive. Now that I've had a chance to play around with it, I can safely say that it's quite possibly my favorite new phone this year, even though it only runs on the EDGE network for data (versus the faster "3G" high-speed EV-DO networks of Verizon and Sprint or the HSDPA network of Cingular Wireless). But enough about the network for now. What I reallly love about the Pearl is its solid and smooth software and efficient processing: So far, I haven't had any slowdowns or glitches.

By contrast, barely a day goes by when the Motorola Q I have doesn't freeze up or slow down in mid-process, or when my email doesn't show up for some mysterious reason--a real deal-breaker for a phone that otherwise boasts a fantastic slim design, excellent phone-call quality, and a huge color screen. The Blackberry Pearl is similarly compact, but so far I've been getting my emails in real-time without a hitch and taking nice 1.3-megapixel pictures and sending them via MMS with no problem--all on the fly at home in the U.S. or on a recent trip to Europe. I'll be posting more later about this revolutionary new device, because there's a lot to say.

I bought my phone but T-Mobile won't activate it due to their computer glitch for a week. terrible customer services. got refund. Too bad no one else has pearl, but t-mobile. what a drag.

i love my blackberry pearl. it was an impulse purchase, i havn't even heard of it yet. i, too, am having a hard time to get the map feature to work as well as the video. nonetheless, it's the first smartphone i've bought and i think it's great.

wow...you guys are really out of date over there. I live in England and had a Pearl a while back as i work in telecomms and it was rubbish. If you want reliability, ease of use, email on the go (via WAN and GPRS) then get one of the Qtek's. I have the Qtek 9600 and it beats the pants off the pearl. for anyone interested in exploring other "better" business solutions here is a link to the phone; enjoy. :) http://www.gsmarena.com/qtek_9600-1588.php

i like pretty much everything about it except the fact that the speaker is not loud enough. i tried messing with it but still not loud enough. i don't know if i'm missing out on something or what. But overall, it's a great phone/PDA.

I got a Peal a few weeks ago and I love it! I had T-Mobile's BlackBerry 7100T for a while. It was fine, but had some major quirks, including not being able to see the screen when the phone was in direct sunlight. The pearl is a sleek BlackBerry that has more functions than I could ask for. While the high price might scare some people away, this PDA is worth the price.

I LOVE MY NEW BLACKBERRY PEARL. I've had the 7250 and 7100i from Nextel and they were ok. I recently upgraded to the new Pearl and it'a amazing. I always wondered when there was going to be a blackberry with a camera and boy it was worth the wait. I RECOMMEND THE BLACKBERRY PEARL TO EVERYONE.

Glad to see that the Blackberry is finally taking a serious leap into the media world. In response to your statment that you Motorola Q freezes up or slows down, I am a Moto Q user, and do not have that problem. Maybe you have a bad unit. My email works well, and as a media player it is incredible. I watch smarTVideo live TV and video on it all the time. Never have any problems. The Blackberry Pearl is a decent looking unit. Now, if they could just take a serious leap into the other network platforms.... I still like the sleek and thin design of the Q.

Great multi-use phone. I love the camera feature. Still figuring out how to use/import MP3 files. I've owned Blackberry since it was a big black box. Love the improvements!

I raced down to the store when this came out as my 7100 is getting pretty beat up. One thing that turned me off was the lack of the track wheel which is engrained in me at this point. I had trouble adjusting to the interface provided. I would appreciate any feedback other users could provide on how that transition is going. Also it seemed like a lot of the icons on the screen were in different places with a different appearance.
