Why I Love the BlackBerry Pearl, Part Two

The first thing anyone mentions to me when they try to pooh-pooh the BlackBerry Pearl is the how they feel about the keyboard. There's some kind of urban myth that it's too small, or that its two-letter-per-key layout is awkward, or that SureType (BlackBerry's predictive text feature) is too hard to figure out. All of which is total rubbish.

I almost started believing the naysayers until I tried typing text messages, notes, and emails on this candy-bar-sized handset. To my surprise, I'm able to whip off emails and text messages as quickly as on the bigger, more obtrusive Treo keyboards (which, to be honest, actually start to irritate my fingers since they're so hard and knobby). And let's not forget that the letter layout, despite being two-per-one, is the QWERTY configuration that most of us know and love.

Why is it so fast? In my opinion, it's all about SureType. As far as I'm concerned, RIM's predictive text technology is miles ahead of even the best T9 (the predictive text found on every other small handset) and still faster than typing out each word by hand on the full-fledged QWERTY keyboard of many a PDA- or smart-phone. It accurately guesses names, slang, and even swear words (hey, I was just checking for anybody who might actually want to use that kind of language).

It's just another example of the Pearl's smooth software, which I highlighted in Part One of my serialized love letter to this fine new phone.

I know people feel strongly about keyboards. Do you prefer SureType or T9? Or would you rather type words out letter by letter using a QWERTY keyboard with one letter per key?

But wait; there's more! Also check out:

The BlackBerry Pearl sounds really cool. I'd trade in my old Motorola for a new phone any day. I'm relieved to see that my Motorola is not the only one that freezes everyday, sometimes even during calls that I can't end unless I pull the battery out. I was going to write a comment on the BlackBerry Pearl, but I had to share my frustration with Motorola. I've owned a lot of different cell phones in my life, but Motorola V200 is by far the worst I've ever used. Stay away from that phone (or that brand)!!!

I owned the 7100t & 7730 before I got the Pearl & I really liked these other phones but this Pearl has so many great features. This is by far the best phone I ever owned. A friend of mine told me to call 1-877-373-7100 and use promo code SS151 which gave me big discount.

This is by far the best phone that BlackBerry has come out with so far. I found an ad online and got mine at 1-877-373-7100 using promo code SS151 which gave me a big discount. This was a few weeks ago but I'm sure it is still good.
