The Logitech Harmony 880 and 890 remotes actually do what they promise: they let you control all your home entertainment devices while being easy to program. The two models are exactly the same except for one feature: the 890 works with the Logitech wireless extender. The extender lets you hide all your components (cable box, DVD player, amplifier) behind closed doors. You only leave out the extender, a hockey puck like device, that picks up the wireless commands from the remote.
The genius of the Harmony remotes is in the way that they are programmed. You connect them up to your computer using the included USB cord and Logitech software. You define what brands and models of electronics you have, and then tell the website how they work together. You create activities, for example ‘when I want to watch a DVD the TV is set to input 3, the amplifier is on the optical input, and the DVD player is turned on." All of this information is downloaded to the remote via the USB cable. You hit the "watch DVD" button and all the appropriate actions happen so you don't have to fumble with the details.
I have used the 890 in my home for a while now and I LOVE this device. I don't have to leave complicated TV instructions for the house-sitter any more—it's very intuitive to use the remote. And the best part? No clutter of remote devices sitting on the coffee table.

I have the 880 and it is awsome for your family that does not know how to turn things on!! Just pick an activity and everything comes on and goes off that needs to so you can do the activity.. If something does not come on Just press help and the on screen guide helps you... Very easy to set up on the web and save your changes ... It is a must to have for anyone who has had multiple remotes.. The only drawback I can see is that it is not very small kid friendly meening you can't throw it around the room or use it as a shovel...

Actually the 890 adds the ability to control RF devices (Although it's a limited selection).
