Doggie GPS- Global Pet Finder and the Garmin Astro

It's every pet owner's worst nightmare: your dog runs away from home. Some pups are chronic escape artists, and the anxiety and fear for owners is extreme. But with the Global Pet Finder, or GPF, you'll always know Rover's location.

The Global Pet Finder is a GPS dog collar that your pooch wears at all times. It has a unique ID that constantly monitors your dog's whereabouts. You log into the Global Petfinder website and a map pops up showing where your dog is currently located.
The Global Pet Finder can also send a text message to your cell phone if the dog leaves the perimeter of your yard.

One caveat — if the dog is out of cell phone range, his location can not be transmitted or tracked. An alternative solution for areas without cell phone service is the Garmin Astro dog tracker. It's a much more cumbersome device that the dog wears strapped to its back. But the Astro uses its own radio signal to transmit the location of the dog to the handheld GPS receiver that the owner carries. If the dog is within five miles of the owner, the receiver uses a compass interface to point the owner to the dog. This solution is best suited to hunting or camping with your dog.

On a leash is the way it is supose to be. I live in the mountains and have huskies and they can leap a 6 foot fence. Way to much money or maybe to much love for you animal. Either way I think its a great idea.

Yes you are all correct, keep them on a leash. But you have to wear the leash right. Just don't grab it with you your hand and go off on a walk. You should put your hand through the loop and then grab the leash, dog it not going to go any were unless you let him/her go. I have a proffesional champion Weigthpull and it's all about training, but also with all that training a dog will be a dog and if my dog was to try and take off and if he happens to take me off my feet I roll to the near't tree or pole for extra leverage. I have never had a problem nor my girlfriend. It's all about the training and wearing the leash right. thanks Amerianbulldogger

Waste of money. Get an electronic fence.

This sounds like a great product to me. I let my dogs off leash all the time to chase rabbits or squirrels and run through the woods. They never catch anything but they enjoy the chase. I have been using a google track stick to see where they go but it would be nice to be able to actually find them in the field if any of them get lost. So far that hasn't happened but there's always a first time.

People are already doing this with kids -- it's called absenteee parenting. The idea is to follow Dr. Spock's (no not Star Trek) "be afraid to even look at your child" philosophy. Just keep the house stocked with food and let them run amok. Our jails are full of the results of this failed hands-off child rearing policy.

This is great! I'd like to use it along with my iphone for my kids next time we go to six flags. They love to run ahead and explore all the rides.
