EV-DO cards allow you to connect to the Internet at broadband speeds from almost anywhere. The card slips into the PCMCIA slot on your laptop and then finds an available cellular data network to connect to the Internet. Speeds are in the 300Kbps range. Around urban areas, Verizon's coverage is very good.
There are different slot sizes on varying computers and a whole other set of concerns for Mac users, so be sure to research what cards are compatible with your laptop. Also Verizon is not the only provider of this broadband cellular access, check this article for more information on the various carriers and cards available.

I own the USB720 wirless modem from Verizon, and it works jst. great. We have no Cable or DSL in my area so this card is really GREAT.
I have had my card for 2yrs and 2 months because I thought it would be ideal as I travel full time in my motorhome, but I have never gotten more speed than about 65kbps.I can download music from itunes ok but no movies and very sketchy(at best)video.I am not very happy with it and hope there have been some major improvements in newer models.
I have had my verizon service for over 2 years since hurricane katrina. I just upgraded to the new USB device with the new technology, the name escapes me. it is much faster that the older technology cards. I live in an urban area normally only get 1 or no bars and it still flies. I watch streaming media with no problems and it's live streaming media I watch.
When coupled with the Cradlepoint WiFi router the USB720 can run up to 16 computers. The USB720 is the greatest. Time to cut the phone & cable lines as I have done. No more extra charges for a second or third computers. The only drawback is that Verizon does not provide e-mail addresses and you have to establish a pop 3 e-mail account ie: gmail, webmail or good old standby Yahoo Mail account

You still cant play a game like WoW or Everyquest, use IRC or AIM or ICQ, download anything, upload anything, watch any movies or videos, stream music, download songs from iTunes or use over 3Gb in traffic in a month. My MOM uses up 10Mb just by starting up her computer. She uses up about 1Gb in browsing traffic over the course of ONE DAY. And she doesnt know how to use a computer! These companies need to change their policies and get with reality when it comes to modern day net traffic. They need to have TRUE unlimited / unrestricted data plans.
