At Nintendo of Japan's Fall Press Conference, the big N confirmed the rumors of a new DS that emerged earlier in the week. Kotaku reports that the new upgrade, named the DSi, features a 640 x 480 resolution camera, an SD card slot for storing pictures and other downloadable content, "audio enhancements," larger 3.25-inch screens, and a slimmer body.

In addition to the hardware upgrades, the new DSi adds connectivity to a "DSi Shop," where users can use Nintendo points to purchase downloadable content via Wi-Fi, similar to the Wii console. Expect to see a free Web browser and a constantly growing library "DSiWare" games.

Those of you with a GameBoy Advance collection of games, there's one problem: The new DSi removes the second game slot, thus removing compatibility to the older generation of games. This is the only missing feature when compared to the DS lite and the original DS.

The DSi will hit store shelves in Japan on November 1 for ¥18,900, or about $180. Initial colors will be black and white, and will hit other worldwide markets sometime "next year."

Need one before the holidays? Expect to go through an import shop and pay a pretty hefty premium. Or, you could always use a vacation to Japan.

So, are you going to upgrade?

They should make a DSX that has all of the above features plus the GBA cartridge. I mean who really cares about a little bulk? Right? Who agrees?

Just when you start getting used to the new DS, they come up with another "upgraded" one. I wonder when Nintendo will stop imitating Microsoft Corp.!!

"larger 3.25-inch screens" this of course is in comparison to older models with the smaller 3.25 inch screens that owners wished was a larger 3.25 inches

The current system has WiFi but it's only good for playing games with local players and no good for surfing the net. Those of us with Gameboy who already own a DS will not upgrade, but I know several people who will get one. Like my dad, so he can carry it around to look at his digital pictures and such.

Yo Sky, might I ask why you even have an NDS? Assuming you do but no games for the system, there's no reason to upgrade or even take one look at the DSi at all. That's like having PlayStation One/2 games and a PlayStation 3 but no PS3 games, and with no longer having backwards compatibility. How does having a DS benefit someone if all they have are Game Boy Advance cartridges? Kind of reminds me of the people who bought a Wii and all they have are GameCube games or plan on purchasing GC discs and never Wii games, for that just get a Cube for sheap and you'll benefit. That or at least eventually purchase Wii entertainment items.

Sounds nice, but I have DS games that require GBA games to be plugged into the GBA slot to unlock features in them - and a bunch of GBA games as well. So unless they make a GBA to SD converter, or automatically unlock all the features of games that require the GBA game to be plugged in, or make the external hardware options that some of the GBA games had - like the solar panel, the motion sensor, the humidity sensors, and more - as external plug in options that work with the DS games that are made to work with the GBA versions of them, I will not be updating to the newer DSi anytime soon.
