Motion controller patent for PS3 uncovered

Looks like someone might be trying to steal a little bit of the Nintendo Wii's thunder. Newly found patent documents show that Sony has been hard at work creating a new motion controller for the Playstation 3. "gofreak" over at the NeoGAF forums was the first to stumble on the patent applications.

According to "gofreak", the new controller will use several technologies to determine the actual location of the device in 3D space. They are:

1) Ultrasound to "determine absolute depth from an ultrasonic detector"—the PS3 EyeToy being the detector.

2) A set of LEDs "picked up by the PSEye camera to determine absolute X/Y position."

3) An accelerometer to "determine xyz and rotational inertia."

By looking at the diagram (click on the images for larger shots), it also appears that the controllers will be able to link together in various positions for multiple functions. One position shows the two linking side-by-side to create somewhat of a "DualShock" appearance, while another image shows two controllers linking up end-to-end, creating a crazy boomerang-looking device.

The whole design looks very intriguing, but it seems like it might be too complicated for the "casual" gamer market that Nintendo has successfully tapped. And that "boomerang" mode looks like it could be particularly dangerous in some scenarios. Sony could be attempting to bring sophisticated motion controls to its hardcore demographic. Regardless, it all boils down to the games, so Sony, I ask you to bring it on.

So, this holiday season, are you leaning towards the Nintendo Wii, or are these new developments going to make you think twice?

Check out all of the images over at NeoGAF—trust me, they're worth a click.

Umm, this is a blog to comment on the PS3 motion controler, not a blog to post your greedy thoughts Laogirl6481 ...you also need to learn how to conjuagte sentences. If you're really from the US, your past english teachers should be fired. Get a job and work like the rest of us. You give women a bad name...oh btw saw your pictures...you're a dog.

To the person who said........... sony, why not just give up, the ps3 is a failure and this will not help. Maybe you should try to get MS to let you borrow their patents for in-game music and achievements(trophies(lol)) so it wont be up to game developers to implement it into a game(which they are not doing). But hey, if you really think a motion controller will make everyone forget about everything else it is lacking then go for it just like the voice changer LMMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE HILARIOUS !! You must not have a PS3. PS3's are underselling Wii, however that does not by far make PS3 a failure. As for in-game music and trophies, again, I must say, you must not have a PS3. I have these capabilities on mine !! Yeah Drevandam, I have both as well and I LOVE my PS3, the Wii was a gift, lol !

PS3 is great. I would buy another soley for the purpose of the BluRay player and media streaming functions, and it would be worth the money. But wait! Play a game like Call of Duty 4 on it, and tell me its not a GREAT system. I can't believe Microsoft skimped on built in wifi.

How's the Wii Remote a copycat of Sony's eye toy? The new Sony remote is just taking Nintendo's idea. There is a reason I'm a Nintendo fan.

Its a good step toward one day full body motion which for me would be cool just to train in a fighting simulation or call or duty 30 running and jumping.

I hope you all realize that this is just a filing for a patent. All video game companies do stuff like this but only 1% of what they file for a patent make it to the shelf. Like Nintendo's cell phone patent, this DOES NOT mean anything until we see a prototype.

sony is just copy cating everyone else they have been since the new system came out. first the guide button like the 360 then the achivments. now avatars and motion control like the wii. the olny thing they had going for them at launch was it was the cheapest blueray player on the market but now there are cheaper ones so they don't even have that going for them any more. pluse the graphics for the games aren't even that great. and i can rant. i have all 3 major systems and the ps3 is buy far the biggest waist of money. save yourself the trouble..buy a 360 and a cheap blueray player from walmart or sams club and be happy.

Wow...this would be great for the ps3 people, but you just know that this new feature will only be making the already super expensive ps3 even more expensive. Since you can just go out and get a cheaper Wii, with basically the same stuff and, for now, better games that use the motion controllers, I don't see why anyone would really go out for this. Especially with the economy the way it is right now.

Looks like Sony's taking an ambitious step. Let's hope they take the time to develop something good and work out all the kinks and glitches before they release this controller and not ru----- out to meet popular demand. I noticed they have done this sort of thing before with the EyeToy and PS3 updates and wound up with a hefty amount of dissatisfied customers. I also have to agree with ridetrek123 in terms of developing a larger game base. Sony had a dynamite start with MGS4 and GTA4 this year, so get some more good games going that aren't just eye candy.
