Looks like someone might be trying to steal a little bit of the Nintendo Wii's thunder. Newly found patent documents show that Sony has been hard at work creating a new motion controller for the Playstation 3. "gofreak" over at the NeoGAF forums was the first to stumble on the patent applications.
According to "gofreak", the new controller will use several technologies to determine the actual location of the device in 3D space. They are:
1) Ultrasound to "determine absolute depth from an ultrasonic detector"—the PS3 EyeToy being the detector.
2) A set of LEDs "picked up by the PSEye camera to determine absolute X/Y position."
3) An accelerometer to "determine xyz and rotational inertia."
By looking at the diagram (click on the images for larger shots), it also appears that the controllers will be able to link together in various positions for multiple functions. One position shows the two linking side-by-side to create somewhat of a "DualShock" appearance, while another image shows two controllers linking up end-to-end, creating a crazy boomerang-looking device.
The whole design looks very intriguing, but it seems like it might be too complicated for the "casual" gamer market that Nintendo has successfully tapped. And that "boomerang" mode looks like it could be particularly dangerous in some scenarios. Sony could be attempting to bring sophisticated motion controls to its hardcore demographic. Regardless, it all boils down to the games, so Sony, I ask you to bring it on.
So, this holiday season, are you leaning towards the Nintendo Wii, or are these new developments going to make you think twice?
Check out all of the images over at NeoGAF—trust me, they're worth a click.

Great concecpt. I like how its a "add on" instead of making it the whole system which could be a bust because Sony has never delved into this kind of technology until now. The pros definately weigh out the cons because of the "add on" feature. Even if it is, and im not saying it will be, a horrible idea its not like its their entire game system put into one idea the company still has the PS3 and many more options to fit their fans fancy. To "add" to that Sony has always made great systems and features, so I think it is an awesome idea I think their idea behind it was hey why not they did it so can we.
Failure. Excuse me? any company who has a multibillion dollar net worth is not a failure, obviously we have some fanboy ----- 's here.Sorry to burst your bubble but sony has been working on this concept before alot of people even heard of a wii. What do you think this was thought up over night? Don't talk ----- when you obviously have no idea what the ----- you are talking about.
I waited 27 hours on the release night of the Wii to get one, and I did! So, I don't need to 'decide' which one to buy - it's all PS3 this year, baby! (Oh, and PS: Hot nerdy chick here, not gross, pimply guy.
i have read all these posts, what i find funny is a few years back, all of you would be making fun of nintendo, not sony. trust me, nintendo has copied off of sony with the motion sensing. i have a wii and a ps3, pretty much of the entire wii library is garbage. That's why they call it wii shovelware. The ps3's game library average score is ALOT higher than the wii's or the 360. It might take awhile for the ps3 to be on top but it will, believe that.
Guess the blog software doesn't read spaces between words. From my previous comment, I wrote "rush" and "it". Hmmm...
competition means lower pricing.
Sony will dominate this christmas with all the broken Xboxs shiped out
This is a great step forward; however, as I am creating my FootBall, Rugby, Lacrosse computer/Internet Game and computer/Internet Associations of Leagues Company, I cannot wait for the technology to get so good that play can step into uniforms and their moves are simulated through the game. Plus, if you just wanted to participate in the teams', programs' or franchises' coaching staff then your words communicate, to the players, the plays and etc you want them to know.
No, the system is still too buggy and expensive to justify a purchase. Make interesting games that are not sequels... then lower the price a few hundred dollars, bring back FULL 100% BC with PS1 and 2 and then we'll talk. Sony is still Fail. Copycating Nintendo STILL. They added the Sixaxis after hearing of Wii's controls and it was big Fail.
These wireless motion-sensitive controllers will just take away the fun of going out, playing sports, working out, etc. That's why more and more people are obese.
doesn't any one remember Microsoft trying to do something similar
i think its funny how everyone is blaming sony for copying nintendo. . .with no proof what so ever. what happened to innocent until proven guilty this is still america a$$holes. yeh i own a wii as well
This is so stupid! How can Sony actually think that they can sell this! The second picture explains its stupidity.
To the poster who said that Nintendo is copying of of Sony with the eye toy/Wii...What about the Power Glove? That came out in the 80's. Way before Playstation its like a primitive Wii remote.
OK to all the people who say the Sony is ripping off Nintendo's ideas. NINTENDO DID NOT INVENT MOTION SENSORS
