Recession? What recession? According to new numbers out of the NPD group, consumers spent $1.31 billion on video games in the United States, resulting in an 18% jump year-over-year when compared to October 2007.

The Nintendo Wii lead the way again this month, by far, selling 803,210 units (doesn't everyone already own one?), up from 687,000 in September. Microsoft's Xbox 360 came in second, selling 371,000, up from 347,200 in September.

Sony was the odd one out this month, selling 190,000 units in October, down about 18 percentĀ  when compared to September.

I personally thought this was going to be a huge, huge year for the Playstation 3, thanks to Blu-ray playback and several attractive bundles, but unless Sony decides to drop the price, it looks like I'll probably be wrong.

So, all of you out there, what console(s) do you own? What do you plan on buying for yourself or a loved one this holiday season? What are your predictions? Let me know in the comments below.

If Sony sold 190,000 units, and Microsoft sold 371,000 units, then they made about the same amount of money, didn't they? A PS3 is a better console than an xbox and that is why it costs more. Of course it sells fewer units. Porsche doesn't sell as many units as Ford, either. And Ferrari doesn't sell as many as Porsche. And a Lamborghini Miura would cost you zillions even though you have to get it used. That goes for the Wii, too, whose days are numbered with an exact number: Feb 17 2009, by which date millions more US households will have HDTV and the Wii just won't cut it anymore. The xbox numbers don't give a breakdown of how many are just the xbox Arcade. But those are $200, while the cheapest ps3 is $400... the higher-end models are up to $350 and $500, so a 2:1 unit ratio is about a 1:1

I have both the 360 and the wii they bring different things to the table. i think the 360 has better games than the ps3, i am thinking about getting one this year though only because i want to upgrade to blue ray and it seems the most cost effective way of doing it considering the blue ray players are almost the same price.

I have an XBox 360 - got it much earlier this year. Probably never going to get a Wii - can never find one in stock, anywhere. And even when I won one in a contest, they couldnt deliver it to me and had to give me cash instead because THEY couldnt find one. I will still with the XBox 360. ZERO intentions of getting a PS3. There are no games for the PS3 that interest me. And I will NOT spend so much cash for a combo indoor grill / BluRay player - the PS3 generated SOOO much heat, it would burn a hole in the wall behind the TV or set my place on fire - I dont need that. Also, I have an HD DVD player, and can still buy PLENTY of HD DVDs for a good price, so I have ZERO reason to get a BluRay anything.
