Iran: "Photoshop is phun!"

Startling images of Iran's missile program have recently surfaced on all corners of the Internet revealing the country's military prowess and strong, stout message of not standing down to anyone, especially the United States.

Should you be afraid?

Only if you're frightened by amateur Photoshop skills.

Xeni Jardin over at BoingBoing put together a great post detailing the story behind the "Photoshop that rocked the world" and explains why several of the missiles in the photo (which was published on NYTimes.com, MSNBC, Yahoo! News and more, mind you) are clearly fakes.

"Iran's state-run media agency has been accused before of having digitally manipulated images released to foreign media. This week, as word spread of purported missile tests in Iran, the validity of an image of four missiles shooting into the sky turned out to be photoshopped -- but not before a bunch of big news organizations printed it as legit."

In light of all of this Photoshop fun, Xeni decided to crank up the LOL-o-meter by asking users to send their very own renditions of the photos. Of course, hilarity soon followed.

Here's my personal fave (LOLcats FTW), but head on over to BoingBoing to check out what the Internet as a creative whole had to offer.

Much thanks to Colonel Cardwell for the heads up.

rather than laughing at this silly article- you should be thinking about the ramifications of this article- one- there are some folks out there who do not know what can be done with photoshop- these same people may be put in charge of deciding whether we fight a war with IRAN or not- and you laugh? I hope everyone who has laughed at this "joke" are the first ones Bush sends over to IRAN. You should focus this article on the dangers of photoshopping and the need for authentic information.

kupriaa1, you are right absolutely right about the dangers of photoshopping--but i view the hilarity of these images as proof that we DO need more informed and skeptical pictures, especially in this age of the internet and computing. i do take this a little lightly, yes, but your comment makes me realize that there needs to be a serious look at certain ramifications from photoshopping images. thanks for your comment :)

the first country to attack iran will be israel . . . probably an initial strategic strike on iran's nuclear and missile developing facilities . . . israel is the country in the most imminent danger . . . after all, iran's leader has asserted that he wants to wipe israel off the face of the earth . . . and is crazy enough to deny the holocaust . . . what is laughable is that europe is responding (at least outwardly) minimally to iran's nuclear and missile development . . . many european countries are well within range of some of these missiles . . . by the way these photoshopped images aren't all that funny . . .

Like any feeling- humor is a great emotion- In this case one could argue the stupidity of the people who took this photo seriously -is funny. But as with all emotions there is a time to laugh and a time to be stern. The graveness of this situation should deter one from silly laughing. No matter how funny and stupid people are- laughing at their stupidity is never a good idea.
