Dropping your cell phone on the street? Not a good feeling. Dropping your cell phone in a giant, filth-ridden puddle in the street? That's the beginning of a bad day.

A new coating and application process developed by the Northeast Maritime Institute makes your cell phone (and other gadgets) resistant to harsh liquid conditions without having to use any exterior casing or other device. The special coating is nearly undetectable and does not interfere with any original functions on the device.

From the website:

Golden Shellback coating has an excellent ability to repel oils, synthetic fluids, hazardous materials, dust, dirt and water based solutions. Low surface tension values, such as water and oils will bead and drain freely from coated surfaces. The process produces a uniform, continuous, near hermetic coating that resists rain and humidity. Electronics casually exposed to water continue to work even after exposure. The coating is readily applied and not generally considered to be removable. Repairs are made using abrasive methods.

Amazing, yes. If you'd like a jaw-dropping video performance, head over to Golden Shellback's website for a video demonstration, and trust me, it really is jaw dropping. (Well, if a fully functioning BlackBerry dunked in a tank of water is considered jaw-dropping for you.)

Pricing and availability are still unknown, but expect to hear more about it very soon.

Golden Shellback - Thanks to Jonny Le for the tip.

No big deal! I woke up with my apartment flooded about 4-5 inches deep. My laptop by HP was underwater the entire time, plugged in! I dried it out for 24 hours and good as new!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, at first I was like what kind of article is this? Until I read the whole thing, now I feel different. Because not too long ago my phone fell into my cup of water and the only thing I could do afterwards was text. If I called someone, I had no dial tone and if they picked up, I wouldn't know. And under what I had written for my banner, when I dropped it in the water, "Car Kit" appeared under my banner. Weird.

I completely submerged my ex's Nokia in a large glass of water back in 2003 in an attempt to destroy it, but after I removed it from the water (about 3 hours later) it continued to work just fine for 2 more years until he got a new cel contract and a new phone. The Nokia continued to work....

I have washed a couple of phones by accident and they have always worked after drying out but when we upgraded our service and they checked the water spot inside we didn't get any money back from them

However in 2005, I accidentally dropped my Motorola in a shallow puddle of water and it was fried right away, maybe it was Karma for trying to destroy the Nokia back in 2003 (?) Or maybe that Nokia is better than Motorola...(?)

This is actually true... I had forgotten my phone in my pocket, and threw my pants in the washer... Realized it was in there a few mins too late lol... I cried because I thought it was toast till, the 3rd day I turned it on and it was working just fine lol, my phone looked like a freaking fish tank lol cuz there was still water inside lol... Works JUST fine, same thing happened to my friends, and her phone still works... I mean if Im paying 400 dollars for a phone that shiiiit better be fireproof as well lol
