Dropping your cell phone on the street? Not a good feeling. Dropping your cell phone in a giant, filth-ridden puddle in the street? That's the beginning of a bad day.

A new coating and application process developed by the Northeast Maritime Institute makes your cell phone (and other gadgets) resistant to harsh liquid conditions without having to use any exterior casing or other device. The special coating is nearly undetectable and does not interfere with any original functions on the device.

From the website:

Golden Shellback coating has an excellent ability to repel oils, synthetic fluids, hazardous materials, dust, dirt and water based solutions. Low surface tension values, such as water and oils will bead and drain freely from coated surfaces. The process produces a uniform, continuous, near hermetic coating that resists rain and humidity. Electronics casually exposed to water continue to work even after exposure. The coating is readily applied and not generally considered to be removable. Repairs are made using abrasive methods.

Amazing, yes. If you'd like a jaw-dropping video performance, head over to Golden Shellback's website for a video demonstration, and trust me, it really is jaw dropping. (Well, if a fully functioning BlackBerry dunked in a tank of water is considered jaw-dropping for you.)

Pricing and availability are still unknown, but expect to hear more about it very soon.

Golden Shellback - Thanks to Jonny Le for the tip.

DO NOT DO THIS, bad, bad tip. All manufacturers have a special water identifier designed under the battery to notify them if any water was spilled on the phone. If anybody performs this test and kicks off this identifier it can invalidate support, warranties, etc. If anybody know how to contact this author, they should be warned. This was a bad article and could cause people a lot of problems!!!

Great idea. Now the cost of cell phones is going to skyrocket because every provider is going to use it on all their new phones. But then again, it might be worth it to those of use who are slightly less coordinated than most (those of us who can't seem to keep from dropping our phones at least once a day!!)!

If you think this is neat, see the videos in the reference section of www.kisspolymers.com, showing a do-it-yourself water-repellent non-stick protective coating. The coating process described by Golden Shellback is showing old technology based on plasma coating, also known as glow discharge. One of the best companies for doing the glow discharge process is Vapor Tech.

It would be nice if somebody featured video or podcast on this novelty. This would cause quite a stir among many lines of different industries. We hope you could send us briefings when this would arrive in Asia and let us have the privilege of experiencing this on our mobile units.
